Im tinkering with XAS abs for a game im making but im finding its becoming more and more of a chore than sideview battles.

How do you decide which battle system is right for your game?

Which do you prefer?

Just got to ask yourself this question:

Do you want your game to play out similar to final fantasy, or diablo?

Diablo is ABS

Final fantasy is Sideview

Personally you can even use front view if it fits your game, it's really just personal choice which one you would like to go with. If your game has a lot of "kill x number of y" quests, then an ABS might be better than a side view. On the other hand, if your game consists mainly of just a main story that the player will progress through, like final fantasy, legend of the dragoon, so on and so forth, then a sideview might do you better.

One of the games i am working on I have the combat system default that comes with RMVXA, and I've merged that battle system style in with the story so that it makes sense.

I prefer sideview.  For 2D games, I can't stand action battle systems unless it is a side scroller.  Just a pet peeve of mine.

That and I feel sideview systems allow a more tactical approach to fights.

@Aceri

That makes sense but..

The way my game looks is more diablo-ish, but the story of the game is going to be pretty lengthy, so I wanted them balanced both. ( diablo / final fantasy styles)

Im using an abs system now, but I feel like its lacking what my game really needs to offer. I am thinking about moving to a sideview system, perhaps an ATB to keep the pace of the ABS, but with the benefits of a sideview system.

I guess I answered my own problem but, the new decision is which sideview/atb should I use... blah... I haven't even gotten a solid start on my project because I'm so indecisive about how to tell my story and how it should play out in the game..

If you're going to do an ABS, IDEALLY you would want custom attack animations for your characters so it doesn't look just like a floating weapon attacking things in front of you.

ABS games can be tactical as well, but where as side view tactics are about group comp/gear ect, ABS is more about gear/environment, as well as more along the lines(in my opinion anyways) of picking and choosing which fights to engage in and which ones to run away from, pulling individual enemies out of a mob pack, ect..

Yeah I can agree with that point Aceri for sure. I was using XAS and the sword animations they use, as well as the spells, seem to cast from my characters knee's. there are only a handful of animations that come with the scripts demo, so im limited there because I am not a graphic designer lol, im a computer hardware specialist ---- which doesn't help at all -----

At least with sideview I can use the rmvxa database to customize animations to use/use stock... seems like it would cut out a hell of a lot of work

:) now using yanfly's base "ace battle engine" along with fumars atb/stamina battle system, paired yet again with jets viewed battle system.

looks great

and even though there are three different engines, I find it easier to manage/customize than just one ABS alone.

thanks for the tips Aceri

My Overworld might be a mix of inspiration from 2D Final Fantasy games, Breath of Fire, Battlechasers: Nightwar, Super Mario World, and Pillars of Eternity. If I can make it more in-depth than just walking from point A to point B, that might do a lot for the gameplay experience. Hmm...
