How do you use a self-switch to turn an event off for good? All the self-switches start at OFF, right? But the check for self-switches is set to activating the event if a switch is ON. By definition, that'll never be true the first time.

What do you mean by "turning an event off for good"? Just don't turn the self-switch back on. You turn a switch ON to turn OFF the event. Maybe you should read my tutorial on switches: http://finalbossblues.com/rmvx-ace-switches-and-variables-p1/
