Sir Lucien and the Demon King
Fantasy RPG

SECTION A: SYNOPSIS
  • Lucien has just become a knight of the Order of the Good Knights and his first quest is to slay the Demon King. Will he succeed or meet his own demise? And who is the Demon King anyways and what's his deal?
  • I'm developing the game in three Acts and plan to release each Act as I complete it, then release the full game.
  • Act 1: Lucien must pass his final exam from knight school to get his first quest.
  • Act 2: Sir Lucien in the Dungeon of Despair.
  • Act 3: Sir Lucien has completed his quest.

So far, I have a rough build of Act 1 done, which has all the basic gameplay elements and text done. Next I'm going to create and place original art in. I already have some original music, but plan to also have all original music and sounds.

I made a playthrough video and see some things to fix already, but mostly it plays the way I'd like. None of the stats are balanced as I just wanted to make the playthrough faster.

SECTION C: STORYLINE/PLOT
  • Act 1 begins with Lucien having to fight his professors, which is his final exam to become a Knight.
  • Upon winning three fights, the leader of the Good Knights inducts Lucien and they say the oath of the GK
  • Then Lucien is given his first quest, to slay the Demon King, whose minions have been terrorizing the Towne
  • Lucien can talk to the Mayor, Inn Keeper, New Apprentice and Magicks Dealer
  • When ready, he can travel West to the Dungeon of Despair. On the way he will have to fight some demons.
  • Arriving at the Dungeon is the End of Act 1

Some of the themes / questions of Act 1:
  • The economic effect of the Demon King on the Towne
  • Lucien's motivation: seeking Glory
  • Why is Lucien given such a difficult first quest?
  • The New Apprentice wants revenge against the Demons
  • Who is the Demon King?
  • Who are the Good Knights?

I have some interesting ideas for the story and how the relationships will unfold, but I wonder how predictable the story is, though. I'm not sure how much anyone else has already written a similar plot.

Scope update

In project management, there is the concept of the three constraints on quality. You only have limited resources.

So I've made a face graphic and a sprite for the main character and while it was fun, I'm not quite happy with the results. I'm sure I'd get better, but it was also really time consuming. I want to get finish the game soon, so I've decided to change the scope.

Originally, I was going to make all original art, but I think it's best to just use RPGMV included / generated assets. The other option would be to do minimal graphics, but that'd just take too much more time.

So, this is the plan and my current progress:
  • art - use RPGMV assets
  • music - original, most of the music for act 1 is composed, just needs mixing and mastering
  • story - done, just needs to be input and edited
  • programming - I have the interactions scripted in story form, just need to implement it
  • stats - I'll be working on this as I go
So, basically, I'm doing everything else except the art, which is more than enough for me (I still have to pick them out / generate them though)! Hopefully, this way I'll be able to get it done in a timely fashion.

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
Can someone recommend some fun story-heavy RPGs to me? Coming up with good gameplay is a nightmare! I was thinking of making some gameplay platforming-based, but that doesn't work well in RPG form*. I also was thinking of removing battles, but that would be too much like OneShot. I don't even know how to make good puzzles!
one bad plugin combo later and one of my followers is moonwalking off the screen on his own... I didn't even more yet on the new map lol.
time for a new avatar :)
