well. it's not a right thing to say.. but - these guys require pretty high price for the product. In fact they do! It's an affordable price for development/design company, even small one, but not really for a single young user. But, it's Internet. To have a photoshop doesn't mean to buy one. That's it.. At any rate SAI is not a bad tool too. When I had a bamboo tablet - I almost didn't use it. I even used mouse when was working in photoshop, I was thinking tablets are just not for me. But since I got intous pro I use it every day. It's just an advice, because I like your works, I want to see them in colours and you remind me myself half of year ago  B)

I find that I don't always have the patience to do any sort of digital coloring. XD I was actually attempting to color something the other day, but lost the file. I haven't decided what picture to color after that. XD

Hey - just wanted to say I really love all of your drawings! They're all incredibly charming, and you're doing a great job of capturing facial expressions.

To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of tablet drawing myself - I just had a few too many eco-friendly teachers to make me feel okay about buying new sketchbooks. I say work with whatever medium or program you like, because you've clearly got the talent to be successful with any of it. :)

Also, I love your work too, as well as the chibis I keep seeing on people's pages. :p

Knock-knock, discussions of how to do something illegal or about something illegal you've done are not allowed. Please do not tell people that they should use pirated software, even indirectly.

I do know for a while, adobe was offering free versions of Photoshop CS, but that was probably a limited time offer. I, myself, use Photoshop Elements. It's a much more basic version of Photoshop, though the only features I really miss are the vector pen tool and some of the layer filter options. But, though the layer effects can be mimicked with creative application of other features, only the vector pen is truly lamented.

If you can scratch together about $60 for Elements, it's a good investment. Sai isn't as versatile, but is still a good program, especially if you want a more painterly appearance.

Like I said, I'll never be able to afford anything Adobe, so I won't bother trying to save up.

So, I keep having people suggest for me color one of these drawings. I'm scared it'll ruin the "style" and turn out lame or generic. Does anyone have any coloring styles/examples that may be able to help me?

That's the nice thing about coloring digitally, you could try out lots of options and not ruin anything. I think it'd be worth while to take one of these images and just play with the coloring for a bit, not even seriously, just try some stuff out. BTW, if you'd like to try other programs besides Sai (not saying you have to just if you want to) I've been pretty impressed with Krita so far. It's completely free, has some nice similarities to Photoshop plus does a few things better than Photoshop.

BTW, what's up with everyone suggesting Photoshop anyway, like it's the only option? It's fast losing it's "best" status, is super expensive, and there are lots of perfectly valid options out there that are better depending on what you're using it for. One of those is Sai, I know of lots of high quality artists who use it exclusively.

Photoshop has been moved to a service-based model. You can have and use Photoshop for as little as 10$/month. You don't get to "own" like you used to when it wasn't a service, but you also don't have to pay hundreds and hundreds of dollars. So, don't write off Photoshop just yet if you really want to use it. :)

Firstly--

The hair actually looks pretty good. There's not a lot of depth there, but that's fine. Are you using separate layers for highlights and shadows? That's what I would recommend. Then you can tweak those without messing up your base colors, and you can try different techniques, discarding those which don't work.

Second--

For me, I go with photoshop because it's what I learned on. When I was starting to learn digital art, it was THE program on the market. There were a few others, but they didn't hold up in terms of versatility and user-friendliness and all-round quality. Since then, it's become the standard, the name people know. Much like Apple has become the only brand people think of when it comes to tablets, smartphones, etc, even though there are SO many out there which are so much better.

Still, I won't ever get to do that either. My boyfriend thinks getting Photoshop is a waste of time, and he has the money. XD

I do everything on layers. So yes, it's on a different layer. I still don't know how to fix the hair, though.

You can use 1-2 colours between those brown colours so it will look more smoother

Try to use more angular shape for shadows

Add a light line

Just a sample, what I mean

I'm not a professional artist, this style looks new to me, but I hope it helps

I think you're doing fine with the hair. Just first block out the shadows and highlights so that they're generally in the right place before you start working on the details like dividing it into locks. In general I'd stay away from rounded spots like you've got at the end of the lock of hair in front of her forehead. Because hair is a collection of long pieces the light and shadows tend to be made up of more angular shapes.

I know few trick who can help you with sai it's depend how you know your sai haha

myself I am not really a photoshop lover it's not something I really affectionate simply because I don't love how this work I usualy more love to use sai.

but now since I want to go in advance in comic making it's more useful to invest into

clip studio paint pro and ex (a pack)

it's costly but it's value the shot because it's regroup sai , photoshop and manga studio in one so this permit to create awesome manga..but this can be also use for make illustration with (pro).

the software is for me the more useful in what I search.

personally sai is good

SO more on the hair

in the moment everything's seem fine you have a good color scheme.

but please don't blur you line like that....thi will be more beautifull if you put a defined lines.

for the color shadow don't hesit to go more heavy on it the hairs have a lot a lot of shadow so you can go ramdomly but alway keep in mind to follow the shadow && light pattern!

usualy for know wich angle the light is follow the eyes light this the best for show your light angle!

I hope I am understable :/

Still haven't quite attempted to color my work, but I'm making a sketch dump of Ghost Shards characters in different poses than I'm used to. :D

Created a reference sheet for my character Sylphia. I kind of realize now that having free-flowing long hair isn't a good idea when you want to be a fighter...

((If anyone remembers Mercenary Maiden, this is the same main character, just different race and personality))

Hai! It's, been awhile. o.o Here are some new doodles!

Zarric, from Ghost Shards--his body came out too lanky. I also originally drew him in colored pencil. XD

Koralyn (left) and Aelina (right) from Ghost Shards. I was trying to see if I could draw an image that would appear during a cutscene. I gave up.

Poppy concepts from Ghost Shards. She's so cute. XD

THE REST ARE TOO BIG!

Drawn for a friend of his characters: https://41.media.tumblr.com/46d65bfc3a2b5563bfe729320dd4c0d3/tumblr_nkapxcBfA51u90xoso1_540.jpg

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
