Hello anyone, I am wondering if the font VL Gothic that RPG maker needs, can it be used for commercial use? I notice when I use a script and select that as the font it changes the font, So I guess thats not the font used with a new project? Also can we use windows fonts or no? Thanks to anyone who may know more about this....

It's a little complicated. You can tell Ace which font you would like to use. A lot of scripts will let you set them up in order so it looks at the list of fonts and picks the first one the user has installed on their computer. So you could go with a standard font used by windows and be fine (Ace only works in windows). Not all versions of windows have the same fonts.

if you're curious

however, you can instal custom fonts by making a Fonts folder in your game's directory and putting a copy of the font in there. If you want to do that, then you'd need a commercial license for that font, or use one that's free for use

That make sense?

the base font used by any Ace project is VL Gothic... it's either the scripts are using actually another font or maybe things like resizing is what makes it look different...

How does this work? When I started the game with Yanfly Core Engine having set defaults to "Verdana" and "Arial" it still gave me an error that it didn't find VL Gothic.

Look up a tutorial for custom fonts somewhere on this forum.

And just remember fonts for commercial use must be either windows-basic fonts or free-to-use custom fonts from websites. Also if you have programs like OpenOffice that has some new fonts, you can use those since it's free anyways.

It's possible that you have another script that sets fonts as well. An easy way to check would be to open up the script editor and press cntl+shift+f and type in VL Gothic.

@Mister Big T - The game WILL ALWAYS LOOK FOR VL GOTHIC. That is hardcoded to the engine (or the RGGS3 player maybe). IDK why they did that though as it's really a disturbing thing.

I have not found a single way to change the fonts in the engine itself, what you can do is just set them after the game already begins to load using scripts and even then it first checks for the VL Gothic. Scripts do not change the VL GOthic dependancy, just try and make your game run without RTP if you don't believe me, you'll be greeted with the VL Gothic error.

So uh, since they are pretty much required for the game to function then, does that mean I have automatically the rights to release the games with using the fonts commercially?

I mean, wouldn't this be incredibly shortsighted otherwise on both Enterbrain and Degica's department since esentially we never could sell games bundled with a required essential font?

I believe VLGothic is distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License v2.

And it's not like ingame font changes the font in the Game.exe like F1 and such.

Don't forget that you can license fonts for commercial use like anything else.  I wish Adobe still supported Pagemaker - I had hundreds of fonts licensed for that back in the day... EULA's were kind of new back then so I can't even guess whether or not they were licensed ONLY for Pagemaker or if they were licensed in general. You could "buy" them separately, so they may have been in general. My loss for not hanging on to them... :(
