Like some other recent posts in this forum, this is an early attempt from a new user!
However, I'd like to think I have put a fair bit of attention to detail into this project so far. Whilst I haven't gone as far as to create my own tileset (which I would LOVE to do!) I have tried to add my own stamp through the lighting, sound effects and writing.
My proud moment, given this was my first non-practice project, was creating a very basic reaction based fishing minigame.
So here goes...

A bunch of great sounds from Freesound.org!

So there you have it. The demo should take just over 20 minutes to play through as intended, perhaps less if you aren't in a patient mood!
I hope you can get some enjoyment out of playing it, and I look forward to your feedback.
With enough interest, I don't mind writing a short tutorial on the script-free reaction time fishing game, as this is a little game mechanic which could be used by complete beginners!
Keep an eye out for my next project

Story Synopsis
Spoiler
John has worked hard to earn his place on an expedition with a renowned English scientist. Together, they aim to collect animals from foreign lands and bring them home to study and exhibit. Excited by the prospect of making real scientific progress, John was happy to sacrifice any form of comfort for the next few months of his life - but he seems to be getting more than he bargained for...
The captain of the ship, once trusted by John's Professor, has changed since their last expedition together. He has become cold and unforgiving - some might even call him a tyrant. This demo follows the trials John is initially put through aboard the ship - some trivial, and some not so trivial.
I intend for the game to play as an adventure style game for it's entirety. I don't anticipate battle scenes. It will be more story and interaction oriented.
For post demo story spoilers, see "Post-Demo Story Spoiler".

World Development
Spoiler
In general, the setting is real world, perhaps around the 18th century, when searching for exotic creatures offered some real financial gain.
The initial scene, and the setting for the entire demo, is aboard the expedition ship. However, the ship has a number of areas to explore, including the Diner, the Kitchen, the Medical Ward, the Cell, Storage and the Deck. As yet unavailable is the cabin on deck.
As you work your way through this initial level you will be introduced to a number of members of the crew, and you can reach your own conclusions about these characters!
Following the events of "Post-Demo Story Spoiler" the setting will be an exotic, undiscovered island. It is my intention that the rest of the game would play out on this island, where John tries to help characters who are being hurt by the captain, whilst gathering "specimens" for the Professor.

Post-Demo Story Spoiler
Spoiler
After the Demo, John is introduced to some rich patrons of the captain, the Baxters. The captain has essentially ripped them off, taking a large amount of money and promising them luxury, but only giving them lodgings equivalent to those of the rowers.
Following this, it will become apparent that the Captain has stolen Lady Baxter's amulet, and John will retrieve it. Later, the ship will head into a storm, at which point the hull will begin to fill with water. When the rowers try to escape the hull, the captain orders the door blocked in with bags of grain, slowing the flooding, but killing the rowers.
The ship is soon landed at an unexplored island. At this point the happy, adventurous atmosphere witnessed in the demo has changed significantly. John works to help reclaim Lady Baxter, who is taken prisoner by the captain. In this process he must also confront the ship's doctor, Kaiser, and the ship's chef, Sebb, who are entirely loyal to the captain out of fear.
As a side project, the player will be gathering specimens for the Professor. Collecting all of these will offer an alternate ending.
The reason I'm happy to spoil all of this is because, to be honest, I may not finish this game. I have a masters thesis to write, and feel that this project lacks an original tileset. I think it's very important for a game to have a truly original aesthetic, such as that in Reap and Sow, another early project development game which I think is brilliant.
