Splitting huge tilesets into several parts

Hello guys,

I have a problem. There are plenty of tilesets I have found, but each of them is one single file and they are not split.

Means: I cannot map properly with it. If I load the same tileset-file into every part (A, B, C, etc.), then stuff will be cut and I just

cannot use it.

So my question is: How can I make them work? Is there a tool that would split these files for me? Would I have to do it in PS myself? If yes, is there a rule I should follow?

Here are some of the tilesets for example: http://nanikasiratkool.web.fc2.com/tilesets/tilesets02.html

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

jb

In MV, pressing F1 brings up the help file. Tilesets are described under asset standards in the documentation part.

As the accepted tileset sheet size is limited, it is advised to split and compose the tiles for specific maps yourself.

It's also possible to use plugins to use tiles not to the standard 48 pixel size like the VX Ace tiles sized at 32 pixels or do the entire mapping outside of MV in software like TileD (mapeditor.org) or Photoshop, unshackling yourself of some of the limitations MV mapping has.

Oh, sorry. I forgot to mention that I am using VX Ace for that actual project. But I guess it´s the same there?

A lot of the same, help file has different headers but except for the tilesizes mapping is much the same. A lot of parallax scripts for ace out there.

Those tilesheets look as if they're formatted for RMXP or for a non-RM program.

The only way to convert them is by using GIMP or Photoshop, and place them into the correct slots for the tilesheets (you can't simply place any tile anywhere on the Ace tilesheets, you need to follow the exact structure defined for it).

The link to these resources was actually posted by Granny in her japan-themed resource thread.

Hmmm, so it´s like I thought. it´s a 32 grid and I would need to open them in photosop, use a 32 grid and then align stuff.

Is there a max width and height for the several parts of the tileset? What should I divide these into? Animation/Water, Floor, Walls, then the objects?

Yes there is - and the maximum sizes are the most simplest limitation you face, but not the only ones.
There are six different formats for Tilesheets, and they have not only different sizes, they are also limited in what tiles are placed where, and different sizes for those tiles.

For example, autotiles are NOT 32x32, but a special structure of either 64x64, 64x96 or 192x96 pixels depending on the type of autotiles.

You can see the structure for the Autotile-Sheets (A#-sheets) by exporting them or in the help file.

Only the upper layer tiles (for the B to E slots of a tileset) are always 32x32, and in those cases you fit 16x16 tiles per tilesheet (or 512x512 pixel total size) in any combination you want.

The help file lists all the sizes and formats of the tilesets. F1 from the editor.
