Hi all.

I've been looking at spriter pro and considering buying it. I like the idea that I'd be able to create a sprite from individual parts and a skeleton and move the parts that way.

I want to know what other people think of the program please?

Is it easy to use?

Is making sprites in the program easy to do? I've been using GIMP to create my sprites manually, so I guess when I ask if its easy, I mean are the tools easy to use?

Thanks for any advise!

Hello brendonx, I am just hearing of this system myself, I can't tell You much about it, I do all My own spriting, not the best work You'll ever see, let's just get that out of the way now, My advice with anything You buy would be to get reviews, I know steam has it, no word on a demo or trial version as of yet, Hopefully I'll have better intel for You latter.

It is a tool. As with any tool, it is as better as its user makes it. When you can make awesome sprites, some programs don't help to make them better, but to make them faster.

Honestly I kinda hated it. If you want to do bone-based animation, ToonBoom is a way better option albeit a bit more expensive ($375, or you can do the monthly thing). But idk, I never tried the pixel art features because I couldn't get passed the workflow issues.

That said, it's not a terrible software. It does what it does pretty well for the price, but unless you like doing puppet-based animation, don't get it. Just my two cents.

Its good, easy to use and can help you animate faster if you know what you are doing and you know how to cut your sprite parts well. It lacks the mesh deform feature atm, but I heard they will be releasing Spriter 2 soon who know if it has the Mesh Deform Feature. As they say if you have Spriter Pro (Steam or not) you will have a free upgrade to Spriter 2.

I'm not familiar with mesh deform. What does that do?

It is pretty good.

I have had some problems with it crashing, but they released some form of fix for that I believe.

I have not used it that much to give a real in depth opinion on it, but for the things I have needed it for, it did the job.

Spriter Pro is a nice program if you plan to make your game pretty much unique with some animations without having to pay artists to do the animations. Of course, paying a professional pixel artist or a 2d artist to make animations will add more postures variety to your characters, while Spriter Pro basically lets you move different parts of a character without really "new" pose - it's the same part but in a different position. It's definitely useful to those who don't have a lot of cash to spend for graphics since Spriter Pro offers a do it yourself solution - Pretty much like Rpg Maker which allows you to create a game without any knowledge of complicated programming. However what is cruelly lacking with Spriter Pro is more diverse tutorials and examples demos for pixel art/2d sprites but once you understand the software, you're good to go!

I bought this on Steam with all the DLC... I am not liking it very much...  I thought it would be similar to GCH as far as creating sprites and then animating them, but no, I have to create Sprites in another program then import them... For me, this is an impossibility since I am not artistic and unable to create my own art work...

Tried it. And IMO, if you have photoshop, you shouldn't bother with spriter pro.....

@metronome true. I learned that the hard way. Yeah. Especially if you are doing several different charsets for one person, you want to keep the file count as low as possible. Trust me. You don't want ten different files for each sprite.

Back in action to develop the indie game that has been long overdue... Final Fallacy. A game that keeps on giving! The development never ends as the developer thinks to be the smart cookie by coming back and beginning by saying... "Oh bother, this indie game has been long overdue..." How could one resist such?
