Hey guys, do any of you have design document / stat sheet type things that you make up for your characters, enemies, weapons and armor? Something that you could use to list base stats, skills and their effects, that you can then build the database from?

I'd love to see examples of how you keep everything organized. I know there's one in one of the blog tutorials, but I haven't been able to track it down yet (still looking) - I don't recall it that just covered actors though and nothing else.

I wish I had something like that, that's all I can say. I totally suck in the database :(

I have. Well here is my example of my sheet I made 2 years ago

It's really useful if you want to continue the abandoned project and you have no idea what to do

Nice. Are there other tabs there that don't have the same layout?

So far none... but right now, I'm actually trying to document everything for the next project... It will probably make it easier to handle things plus I will now have something to copy-paste from when I need to dish out info for the threads I will be making for the game

@Theo,

Damn man you are clearly one very organized person :/

I would only consider doing something like this if i was then able to make my database read from that data rather than from the default database... Wait a minute I could...

ahh nevermind...

I usually just keep all my info inside some kind of txt document.

I also always follow a 'ruleset' to make my game balancing alot easier. for example - all 'grade 1' weapon will have a max of 8 stat points. then I would evenly spread those points among the weapons / armor etc..

Thats slightly off topic i guess though :/

I'm very well organized if I gonna make a big project or stuff.

Sure, it will come handy if you want to make a change a little part of it

(I even make a new class just only to calculate damage formula)

Other tabs are based on RMVXA default database. Of course in the weapon tab consist ATK, DEF, etc ...

The background color of the table cells is just separator of database type. For example, fire skills has red background. Meanwhile ice skills has blue or cyan background. Just do as you like.

Here is the example of states tab

But do you have a set format to make it easy to keep track of it all and ensure you haven't missed anything?

Yes and no...

The most organized part of my project is kept inside my scripts.

Here is an example for a Tier 4 weapon...

  #---------------------------------------------------------------------------  # Weapon ID[ 1 ] Teir 4 settings  #---------------------------------------------------------------------------  4 => {    :icon => 547,    :name => "★★ Epyx Blood Axe",    :description => "Blood stained axe, has been used on the battlefield \n" +                    "by many famous warriors. Most notably, Epyx The Brave.",    :price => 100,    :durability_inc => 20.00,    :text_color => Color.new(212,64,0),    :random_features_max => 4,    :random_features_chance =>{    1 => 100,    2 => 100,    3 => 100,    4 => 100,    },    :random_features => [    # [:param, id, gain min, gain max, price inc, chance range]    [:param  ,  0,       30,       40,        50,       0..199], # 20% chance    [:param  ,  0,       50,       60,        75,     200..399], # 20% chance    [:param  ,  2,       10,       14,        50,     400..599], # 20% chance    [:param  ,  2,       14,       18,        75,     600..699], # 10% chance    # [:x_param, id,   gain,           price inc, chance range]    [:x_param,    0,  0.025,                  50,     700..799], # 10% chance    [:x_param,    0,   0.05,                  75,     800..849], # 5% chance    [:x_param,    2,  0.025,                  50,     850..949], # 10% chance    [:x_param,    2,   0.05,                  75,     950..999], # 5% chance    ],# end random_features    :fixed_features => [    [:feature,   32, 27,   0.25,       100,          nil],# State id 1    ],# end fixed features  }, #end teir 4
Cause all my equip is defined by script (unique / randomized equip) I find it easier to keep track of it that way.

The only things I keep in documents are things for balancing out the game.

I usually write a script to do [x] and then format it in a way that I will find easy when I return to fully customize it later :/

databasing really isnt my strong point...

I used to run some OpenOffice spreadsheets on my old laptop that had all my skills, descriptions. Another for stuff like actor information, relationships, their main jobs, character bios and plot-notes.

But I lost all that stuff and now I just have everything written in a marble notebook.

So much blur

Such old-school

I'm pretty terrible at organizing, so I just keep everything in text files. I find it easier to work with when I can edit them faster and more easily than a spreadsheet. I do often end up with quite a lot of them, though.

I'm a pencil and paper fan. Much easier for me to flip through pages, find things, and make changes than trying to search through text files.

I'm currently using a wiki space for my project (even though It's a free version and you can only have five people joining it). But I use it to give my writers a better overview of my game, and it saves me a lot of frustration to have 100 documents on the computer. It works really well, and everyone in my team can add stuff whenever they feel like it and the changes made will be visible for everyone as soon as the upload it, which is really neat :)

I don't have anything stat-related or formula related though including the database. I'm really bad at the database, so I more or less just try out the skill in battle and tesplay a lot to see if It's fairly balanced xD

I too am currently keeping all my notes in a notebook. Every time I try to do it on my computer, I get disinterested for some reason. So I write it down. Items, states, weapons and armor, I even hand drew the map and have game events laid out. I find it useful to whip out and write down ideas than having to turn the laptop on, especially when I'm at work.
