Could you be a bit more specific? You are trying to figure out how to go about giving your characters and monsters their base stats, and then figuring out what damage formula's to give your skills?

This is a pretty big topic, and will definitely need to depend on your game in specific. You may want to try discussing combat mechanics in the game development forum under game mechanics.

In general, you need to figure out some kind of system to work with. The basic pre-made game system is that ATTACK is raw damage, and DEFENSE is raw damage negation, and then skills will give a multiplier for them, plus sometimes base damage. This gives you formula like "2 * a.atk - b.def". You deal damage equal to twice your attack, and the defender mitigates damage equal to there defense. Higher damage abilities will have a bigger multiplier to the atk, lower damage abilities would have a lower multiplier. As such you can also make different ratios by increasing or decreasing the multiplier on the defender.

Another option is to have attack and defense themselves be scalars to the raw damage of a skill. So maybe all attacks deal base damage, and for each 50 points of atk over the targets defense, the damage is doubled (or halved if defense  > attack). Then you just modify the base values of the skills.

There are a myriad of options, and combinations of them can add to varied gameplay.

Well, good luck, hope you get it figured out.

Edit: For me, I am using a system where all abilities deal ATK damage, but have a scalar (1.0, 0.8, 2.0) that type of thing, and then defense is a percent reduction such that each 50 points of defense halves the damage. This is fairly simple since I can just modify the scalars on skills to make them higher or lower damage than average, but still have there damage mostly be based on the stats of the character. I do all sorts of exceptions to this though :) .

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
