I've been following Kelsper's beginner's guide http://forums.rpgmakerweb.com/index.php?/topic/1249-beginnergeneral-beginners-guide-to-rpg-maker-vx-ace/ by doing so, I've created a power which is very similar to the steal skill in the Final Fantasy games. The way the code is written here though I think it's overpowered. He can continuously steal from the same enemy over and over. Also, there is always something to steal from every enemy. I want to change those aspects of the skill. I would like him to only be able to steal from the same enemy one time. After that, the enemy has nothing more to steal. I would also like to set it up so that a random number of enemies have nothing to steal in the first place. Here's a screenshot of the code I copied from the guide which will show you the skill as is.

Edit: I also lowered the variable which was set at 80% to 65% and lowered the gold multiplier to * 3 instead of * 15. Both of those seemed overpowered to me as well.

That kind of system is going to be very difficult if not impossible to accomplish with eventing alone, as you would need to have a switch for every enemy in battle tracking whether it had been stolen from or not, and reset them all at the beginning/end of each battle. It's possible, but this is one case where a script would make your life substantially easier.

I'm sorry I guess I wasn't clear in what I wanted. As is, when he goes into battle he can steal from the same individual enemy over and over as many times as he wants. I just want it set up so that after he has stolen from that individual enemy in that specific battle he can't keep going back and stealing more. There is no reason to keep track of which enemy he has stolen from after the battle is over because I'm only talking about that individual battle. I also want it set up so that a random number of encounters have enemies with empty pockets. In essence, I want the skill to work basically the same way as it does in the FF games.

I think you were clear, and the answer is the one that you were given - that you will need a script to do this.  You can't do it by eventing alone.

EDIT

Try this one by Yanfly.

So how would I do that? I'm reading that script and totally lost. Is there a good tutorial to understanding how to use the information you gave me? I'm just starting out. Even though I've had the program for over a year I haven't tried to use it in a very long time. It's only been in the last couple of weeks that I've decided to get back into it.

The sections you read are at the top.  You need to know what a note tag is.  It is something that you write in the box called 'Note' on the different tabs in the data base.

Yanfly sets out what possible note tags you could put in.  You don't need to put them all in, you don't need to put them into everything on that tab.  You select which item, or piece of gear, or skill has the note tag.  If something doesn't have a note tag, then nothing happens.

So if you have a character who can steal you will need to give her/him a note tag like the ones set out in the Actor section at the top of the script.  You will need to specify the percentages yourself, deciding how successful etc that character will be.  Sort out your skill note tags in a similar way.

Two things to bear in mind, though.

I suggested this script at random because I knew where to find it.  It may not do all the things you want to do, in which case, search the Master Script list for other scripts of this type and choose one which suits better.

The other thing is that you say you are relatively inexperienced.  Don't be surprised, then, if scripts seem a bit impenetrable at first.  Get other aspects of your game under way while you are building up knowledge in this area, and then come back to it.

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
