I have some ideas that I don't think I will actually use so I'll see if anyone might. If you guys want to continue this thread by posting your own that could be fun. Here's my first:
A game that is not just in a steampunk theme, but that really lets you dig into tinkering. The main character, Sticks, is a full-on artificer with a customizable golem/clockwork robot/warjack named Brick. Not only can Sticks do things like build gadgets that give him little tricks and swap out weapons on his own mechanical bodyguard, but he can also tinker with elements of the game world to solve puzzles or gain access to bonus areas. He can pick locks, set or disarm traps, mine ore, brew potions, rummage through junk for useful salvage, buy or barter parts from NPCs, and learn magic to enchant items- he just can't be good at everything so you prioritize and customize. Sticks has to fight "smarter not harder" to win the major battles; using the terrain tactically is just the half of it.
Most obstacles and puzzles would have multiple solutions and most battles would have different ways to win. Which worked best would depend on how you customized the character. Locked door? You can pick it, cut it with a torch, or blow it with explosives. Ambushed in an alley? If you built powered armor you'll just wade in and start swinging with your mining pick or chainsaw while Brick fires mortars. If your Sticks is more squishy he can use his crossbow and grappling hook to get to a roof and snipe from relative safety while Brick tanks.
Sticks and Brick would probably have a flippant/stoic dynamic, respectively. Sticks can use stealth but Brick can't. For Sticks I'm thinking red hair, blue eyes, brown leather jacket, dark green pants, white shirt, and of course goggles, usually up on his head. That would make a striking and memorable appearance in an art style like Fullmetal Alchemist, which seems fitting.
I say "he" but I chose a gender-neutral nickname for a reason. Obviously it would be much better to handle the character Shepard-style.
The overall plot might have him caught between a militant druid circle and a cult of the "machine god" Aryx. (been looking for a use for that name for months) Bonus if he can choose a side or evade them both for alternate endings.
I think this would be a fun game for players who like to tinker with character builds, solve puzzles, explore, or just obsess over finding that last golden gear or whatever for 100% completion.
