It's mainstream at this point, but I'd say Undertale.

I haven't played many strange RPGMaker games, so LAZER EYES might not be much. It's worth checking out if you like that B-movie vibe though.

The strangest rpgmaker game I've ever playe is probably gulpy Gulpy, that Mr. Detective already showcased.

The strangest finished rpg I've ever played would have to be Baten Kaitos: Origins (on the surface it's not that strange, but about three fourths of the way in if you really pay attention to the story and think about what's being implied it'll make you want to drown your braincells in drugs and alcohol till you can't think strait for about a week.)

The strangest rpgmaker anything I've ever seen was this Hentai version of an rpgmaker development website I stumbled across once while googling stuff, showing that porn will find it's niche in every medium, no matter how pixelated, tiny and otherwise inappropriate it might be for said medium.

Edit: Apologies for piggy-backed necropost. I didn't read the dates and realize this was a year old.

If the topic is is in line I'm sure there's no problem. In fact, this gets me to thinking maybe I should make something small showcasing 'tales of the strange and bizarre'.

The Mother series (EarthBound) is really the only series that manages to make its weirdness work and be actually good games at the same time.

(It's why a lot of people who try to do "quirky" RPGs just shamelessly rip off EarthBound.)

Gulpy Gulpy and it's stages of annoyance made me lose my breath. I used to do some really random rpgs before but this one really outdid all of them.

Also as stated before, Mother all the way regarding weird games that are actually really playable.

Undertale and the Mother series have a lot of strange parts in them.

I'm mostly inspired by the odd side of rpg maker games. My most favorite out of the bunch being hylics
https://mason-lindroth.itch.io/hylics

I'm mostly a fan of Mason Lindroth's work. It's not how he makes games with clay, but how he uses them to make these odd worlds that you may not understand at first. But when you get the second chance, you see it clear and you start to understand how the world works around you. How the games sprites morph and turn and twist makes it all trippy. And when its not 3D clay art, its 2D visuals and back grounds. Pretty good if you ask me.

I cant believe we had to get this far into page 2 for someone to bring up Hylics... Its both strange from a visual and auditory standpoint, but also from a mechanical one (needing to die in order to level up for example). Its a good display of what RPG maker can do when its put in the hands of someone with an actual imagination.

I would recommend Space Funeral as well. Mechnically its a pretty standard turn based RPG (outside of the mystery option you get once per battle) but the world and characters in the game are completely unlike anything else out there. Also its free.

I see a lot of undertale and earthbound references but anyone who finds those games strange has had a pretty shelterered gaming history...

I'm not sure how this one managed to lurk so long in General Discussion.

If you don't know me already. I pretty much played all the good ones. Including space funeral. If only I could one day struck a gold mine of weird rpg maker games.

But yeah. Hylics is a pretty good game. The fact that it awards failure. Only to make you stronger.

Most strange rpg maker games I can think of have already been mentioned.

The strangest RPG I've ever played though is probably Baroque.

In the game you repeatedly climb a tower in a post apocalyptic world that ended in a disaster that isn't explained and shoot god in the face with a gun given to you by an archangel for reasons you don't really understand, playing a mute character who doesn't remember his past, and the story is told through bizarre scenes pulled completely out of context that you have to piece together yourself. And even with it all put together it is hard to understand.

I'd say Elona. This was the first time I ever played a game where your backpack can crush you to death. Magical storms make you mutate and grow extra body parts, the tutorial giver tries to trick the player into cannibalism, and you can use a piano as a thrown weapon in battle. You can choose a snail as your character race if you really want a challenge. And you can make money by busking but if you're not very skilled, don't be surprised if your audience stones you to death.

I remember a reviewer saying it's a game that sums up the phrase "life isn't fair", which is spot on. The game loves to mess with you and it's easy to die in really stupid ways.

Undertale for sure. I know everyone loves the game, but I could never get into it.

No one mentioned Toilet in Wonderland? The RPG Maker 2000 game?

Seriously, the Japanese community makes some really weird stuff.

I don't mean to be rude, but I think I need to "re-educate" alot of you (but not some of you) on what a "weird" game is. Because I come into this thread a few times and I see that people are only talking about weeb crap instead of actual weird games. When I think of a weird game, its mostly games like space funeral, hylics and a few other games that you might stumble across if you go into the bottom of the itch.io rpg section. Not games like undertale or Atlus USA. Even games like LISA could be considered weird. Its not that weird but hell, its kinda weird when you stumble across something out of the norm. Just wanting to get that out there.

Trust me, if you don't think Baroque is weird you've never played it.

Also, no, you are pretty rude. Seriously, don't preface **** with "I don't mean to be rude" and then be a dismissive jerk and look down on everyone else.

So what if it is rude. People just don't understand what weird even is anymore.

so hopefully tomorrow i get to go home from the hospital i've been here for 5 days already and it's driving me mad. I miss my family like crazy but at least I get to use my own toiletries and my own clothes. My mom is coming to visit soon i can't wait to see her cause i miss her the most. :kaojoy:
Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
