So I was always wondering, how actually does that special flag work.

Can someone explain it to me?

According to the help file:
Substitute
Character suffers attack in place of allies with less HP.

So, let's say I have two actors in party: A Warrior with 500 HP and a Cleric with 200 HP. The Warrior has a skill that activates the Substitute special flag on him. Then a monster attacks, aiming at Cleric but in the end the Warrior takes damage that was supposed to be dealt to the Cleric...

Am I right?

That's what it sounds like - seems like it'd be fairly easy to test.

When the substitute state is active on an actor, he will defend everyone, so you don't command the Warrior to defend the Cleric only. I don't know if Ace's handling is exactly the same as in MV, but in MV the warrior only takes the bullet when the Cleric's HP is low, so when it's "yellow". And, if I'm right, the Warrior cannot block skills that are "certain hit".

I've just tested it and it works exactly like in MV

Where's this sudden heatwave come from? It's not even sunny, it's just hot. Hate it!
I'm slightly disappointed that the MZ codebase still uses core.js, managers.js, objects.js, scenes.js, sprites.js and windows.js instead of core/Bitmap.js, core/Graphics.js, managers/AudioManager.js, managers/DataManager.js, etc...
