How would one go about "erasing" a small portion of the map layer directly around the player? this would allow one to uncover "secret" art hidden in the parallax background. Thanks!

The simplest way would be for the part that will be erased to be, in fact, graphic events, 2 pages, second page blank except being conditioned by a switch - either a self-switch or a global switch, depending on what you need.

When the switch is thrown, the event goes blank, revealing the background which was there all the time.

I'm sorry, I wasn't clear enough as to what I'm asking. I basically want to use an image (like a standard white on black circle) that removes the opacity of a given layer. The specific circumstance is an end of the world scenario (pictures attached) where the main character has a "protective shield" around him where the world looks normal.
Your idea, although great in a general purpose scenario, would conflict with the "hand drawn" art style I have already established the world as. Maybe I'm asking for too much, but if some sort of opacity "subtraction" is possible somehow, that would be perfect.
Thanks!Screen Shot 2017-07-31 at 9.35.28 AM.png

Ok...
So it's working, but too well. Not only does it mask the map, but it seems to be masking the parallax as well!
How do I make a mask only apply to a single map layer?
