So, for the first time in like.... 7 years? 8 years? something like that, I went to an anime convention and didn't work as staff all weekend. Which meant I actually saw the convention. Which meant I realized that I actually do like anime quite a bit, even if I haven't watched much in a really long time.

So I need suggestions. So here are my rules for suggestions:

  1. Cannot be something that is already super popular. If its super popular, I've probably heard of it already. Its hard to be anywhere near anime fans without having heard of Gurren Lagann/Cowboy Bebop/Attack on Titan/Death Note/etc.
  2. Actually give a reason why I should watch it and what kind of genre it is.
  3. Nothing with 100+ episodes. I've never been into most of the super long shonen shows like Naruto/Bleach/One Piece/etc. The exception being D. Gray-man which I liked, but its not what I'm looking for.
My personal taste: I actually have an oddly diverse taste. I've watched and enjoyed anime in a lot of different genres, though I would say my personal favorite genre is real robot stuff. Some series that I've seen and enjoyed (I've seen way more than this, this is just off the top of my head):

  • Every Gundam series up until 00 (Technically I wouldn't say I was a huge fan of all of them, but I have seen them, and generally like the Gundam series)
  • Full Metal Panic! + Fumoffu + Second Raid
  • Sword of the Stranger
  • Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal (didn't really like anything in this series other than the OVA)
  • Martian Successor Nadesico
  • Gankutsuou
  • Mazinkaiser SKL
  • Kare Kano
  • Azumanga Daioh
  • Haunted Junction
  • Samurai 7
  • Infinite Ryvius (by the way if you haven't watched this one, do it, its a fantastic series that no one has heard about)
  • Ergo Proxy
  • Darker than Black (one of the few series I have watched recently)
  • Visions of Escaflowne
  • Trigun
  • Record of Lodoss War + Chronicles of the Heroic Knight
  • Irresponsible Captain Tylor
  • Chrono Crusade
  • Paranoia Agent
  • Perfect Blue

hunter x hunter (2011), its takes a WHILE to get the the fight scenes, like more than 10 episodes, pretty much cause its building up the story. but the fight scenes are awesome and the story is good;.

... Oh god, have to go back and add a third rule to my initial post. I meant to mention it before, but super long Shonen series are the one genre I like almost none of.

for a short anime who play around the "After" the story

hagure yuusha no estetica

this is a good story in my term yes this is a sub ecchi but this rather light and well balanced

if you search a short anime I suggest you this story

or

Blood lad

if you are more humor

Ixion Saga

if you want to trick your mind without the need of big fight

maoyuu maou yuusha

if you want big comedy but with cool fight scene

Hataraku maousama

Ooh, ooh, this is a perfect topic for me. I'm going to start with

  • Darker than Black (one of the few series I have watched recently)
well, crap

I'm glad you liked it, though, as it's one of my favorites and I seriously cannot say enough good things about it. Also very good taste with Perfect Blue.

I can think of a few really good ones to recommend, but as you requested things that aren't already super-popular, I'll try some others. There are also some that I think are fantastic that probably won't align with your taste so I'll also omit those.

Based on your listed preferences, the first one to jump out to me as a good recommendation is Psycho-Pass, which is sort of like a darker cyberpunk Darker Than Black mixed with Minority Report.

In a world where computers can accurately scan one's mental state, the government keeps close tabs on every person's likelihood of committing a crime and restricts the freedoms of people who might be a threat to society, as well as attempts to treat them to help them safely integrate back into the rest of the world. Guns are now tied to this "cymatic scan" and will only fire at someone whose crime coefficient is high enough to warrant enforcement action. The story follows a team of detectives and explores the morality of such a world.

Why you'd like it:

  • Interesting cast of mostly adult characters (including a cool dynamic between an adult father/son team)
  • Novel take on some cyberpunk themes
  • Actually pretty thought-provoking, especially if you like literary and historical allusions
Caveats:

  • After the first few episodes, the pacing slows down for a bit which is kind of annoying but when it picks back up, the series really hits its stride and stays very strong all throughout.

Next up is a pretty weird but solid choice, Eden of the East (Higashi no Eden).

A guy suddenly wakes up in front of the White House, naked, carrying a handgun and a cell phone linked to a bank account with over a million yen in it and he has no memory of who he is or how he got there. He soon finds himself embroiled in a conflict with several other individuals who are on a quest to "save Japan" at any cost -- and his past self has done something to seriously piss them off. The story follows his struggles to figure out why he erased his memory and what he did, as well as to come out on top of this contest where money is power and the goal is to rescue Japan from its worsening state of financial recession.

It's hard to really sell Eden of the East because what makes it so good is just how damn well executed it is. Seriously, just watch the first episode even if you have no intention of watching the rest of the series. It has the most compelling first episode I've seen in a long time and it conveys how great the writers are at writing charismatic, likeable characters.

What you'd like it:

  • Pretty laidback story with a good amount of drama, mystery, and spectacle, without really becoming grimdark.
  • One of the only anime where the cast is written like human beings and is really amicable and fun to watch.
  • The opening is by Oasis and it's beautiful.
  • There's a dude with a dog.
Caveats:

  • None, really. It's a solid 11-episode series that's mostly lacking in anime BS. I've had a lot of success showing it to friends who don't otherwise watch anime.

Onto a very recent one. This I thought was pretty good but not amazing, yet I think it'll fit your tastes a little better than mine: Aldnoah.Zero.

When the US landed on the moon, they found something more than they expected: a hyperspace gateway to Mars. This led to the human colonization of Mars and the subsequent discovery of some super-advanced technology called Aldnoah, which the Martian settlers monopolized and used to catalyze a cold war between Earth and Mars. Now, in the present, the mounting tensions are coming to a head. Aldnoah.Zero is a mech series, sort of, but it mostly focuses on the pilots and their interpersonal conflicts and their feelings toward the war.

Why you'd like it:

  • The protagonist isn't the chosen one in the chosen mech that can just beat everyone because of how awesome it is. In fact, he's just this chump who spends the entire series in a piece of garbage practice mech and when he wins, he does so with clever planning without resorting to Code Geass levels of contrived BS.
  • Surprisingly deep characters who frequently make you reevaluate what you think of them.
  • Healthy blend of action, characterization, and ethical drama.
  • Short and sweet (12 episodes with a second season coming in January).

Caveats:

  • If you're not digging it after a couple of episodes, it's probably not for you. The character development can be kind of hit or miss.

I could keep going but I think that's a good starter list based on what I think you might like.

Ergo Proxy, Kare Kano and Perfect Blue eh? I love you.

I'd go with everything satoshi kon has done.

Millenium Actress is one of my favorites after Perfect Blue. Paprika would be next, followed by Tokyo Godfathers which I liked the least (but still loved).

Mushi-shi - because it creates a super mellow universe around insect/spirit like beings that coexist with is, causing crazy ailments and phenomena around us that we wouldn't be able to explain otherwise. If you look deeper into each episode, you can catch a lot of ideas that play off of old Japanese folktales.

Dennou Coil - please please pleeaase watch this one. Concieved before google glasses were ever a thing, it's a place that melds the digital world (via glasses) with the physical world.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (and Second Gig, and Solid State Society)
and Arise, the new reboot-ish series. Because Tachikoma, and that's it.

Aldnoah Zero - Just game out, a new mech anime that looks very very promising. Revolves around extraterrestrial mechs piloted by martians (humans who terraformed the planet) getting revenge on earth. They found ancient technology on Mars (Mass Effect?) that give them a technological advantage but they have an archaic caste system in place, and food is difficult to come by there. Battles aren't just "oooh bigger robot more damage" but smart, with the martian mechs (mechs called Kataphrakts) having specific unique traits, and the Terran mechs a crude copy of theirs. I dunno, you probably heard of it but give it a chance~ It's finished its first season (or maybe half season) just a week or so ago.

Yeah, Psycho-Pass was kind of on my short list of things to watch next already, I've heard a lot good about it. Eden of the East is one I heard about, then never really thought about again for some reason.

Aldnoah Zero is one that I'm going to wait on. I generally prefer to watch series that are finished because I'm bad at coming back to things or watching things 1 ep at a time.

On Code Geass: I've seen it, or well, pretty far into the second season of it, and... it started off strong and then kind of went downhill after a while.

Also @Sail, yeah, when I started watching Darker than Black I immediately thought "I bet Sail likes this, because I can see a lot of inspiration from it in Ars Harmonia".

@Seita, yeah, Kare Kano is kind of a weird thing in the middle of the list. I have eclectic tastes to say the least. The first time I watched it was actually when I dropped off my wife's brother at a friends house one night and ended up accidentally sitting up all night with them watching that series straight through. Kind of weird to think of 3 dudes sitting around watching it, but we all liked it for some reason. It also led to the euphemism "He caught her hat", due to the absolutely bizarre cutaway montage during what was obviously the two main characters having sex.

I went and watched the trailer before you edited the review in :p .

Seriously, this is one of the few times I've ever been suggested something I've literally never even heard of. Which is cool. Because I usually hear about everything at least in passing. I'm definitely going to check this one out.

Steins Gate is a pretty common recommendation but many people never finish it, I think it has a poor startup. It's a great anime though.

Some non common ones I'd recommend are Haibane Renmei, Shinsekai Yori and Time of Eve (Eve no Jikan). They're all story heavy and have a great sense of world building.

Then a few of my favorites being Eureka Seven, Durarara and Monster (although I prefer the manga).

I've been meaning to watch Haibane Renmei ever since VicBond007's "Charcoal Sketched Dreams" AMV won the AWA Masters in like... '03? But I never got around to it. Its a bit sad to mean to do something for 11 years and forget to do it.

Shinsekai Yori also sounds really interesting.

Here's one, but I don't know if it's available in your country yet:

Suisei no Gargantia (12 episodes)

Starts with a big space-battle in the first episode, but then takes an entirely different focus - expect several surprises when you learn what really happened...

On Evangelion:

Watched the original series, it has a great concept, but flounders around for a bit near the middle, then completely goes downhill near the end, between lack of funding (which is hilarious considering the franchise is worth more than a billion dollars now) and what could possibly just been a mutual nervous breakdown by the staff of the show. Then we got the troll ending of Death/Rebirth. Then we got the "this is what I really meant" ending with End of Evangelion, which is actually interesting, but I still think Anno was ****ing with us a bit.

I've been tempted to watch the Rebuild movies though, but I kind of want to wait until the fourth one comes out to do it (I've managed to wait this long to start watching them, so might as well go all the way).

For an anime that I don't really like that much, I've watched Eva a weirdly large number of times. I probably like it more than I say I do, but I just really hate its fans on top of everything else. :p

Also, I think that breaks the Super Popular rule. Eva is like crazy popular.

(And while I'm not a huge fan of it, I do like that it exists, because it was a huge positive influence on anime as a whole, and lots of stuff I do like probably wouldn't exist without the ground it broke).

Log Horizon:

Log Horizon is about a bunch of people who got sucked into their MMO "Elder Tale" when an update was installed. It differs significantly from SAO in that the world they end up in seems to be a real alternate world that the game corresponds with rather than a digital program. The NPCs are real people with their own economy and politics.

The new season just started, I do not know whether any of it is online yet.

Heroman:

Heroman is a toy robot that a teenager rebuilt, it was struck by a lightning bolt generated by energy from an alien invasion's FTL drive interacting with the Earth's atmosphere. The energy caused it to transform into a huge fighting robot that is now humanity's only hope against the aliens. The show is a true anime, but the idea was originally made by Stan Lee of Marvel Comics fame.

Engaged to the Unidentified:

Engaged to the Unidentified is about a girl who found out about an arranged marriage on her 16th birthday when her fiance shows up at her house. The chaos doesn't show until later though. I'll put that bit of info under a spoiler because it may tip the balance in helping you decide whether to watch or not, but as it isn't found out until about episode 5(I think) it would count as a "spoiler". :p

Her fiance and his family are all yokai rather than human. Their families have known each other for decades. When she fell off a cliff as a child the boy who would become her fiance saved her life, at the cost of losing an eye and giving her 1/2 his power.

Hentai Ouji Warawanai Neko:

Hentai Ouji Warawanai Neko is also known as HENNEKO. Despite the "hentai" in the name it is NOT porn, though the male main character IS a pervert. The "Stony Cat" in the title is an idol that grants wishes, but only as a price. And there is no bargaining with it, the price taken is very rarely something the person was willing to give.
