Champloo sits in the same camp with Watanabe's previous work, Cowboy Bebop, to me, in being series that I think are alright, but get way more credit than they deserve. They aren't bad, but they aren't "amazing". Champloo does have absolutely fantastic fight choreography and animation and Bebop has an excellent soundtrack though.
Each to their own I guess, but when you actually consider what the best-selling and most critically acclaimed anime actually are, I'd say both of those are actually underrated gems based on the hard statistics of the medium =P

They're decent but I cannot even conceive of a definition of "underrated" that would fit either of them. Odds are if you ask anyone what their favorite anime of all time is, they'll probably tell you one of the two. It's like calling Final Fantasy VII underrated.

That aside, there's rarely a correlation between quality and success.

Haven't watched neither of those titles (in terms of watching full episode.)
When I started to watch anime more actively, stuff like Yu-Gi-Oh! already were classics.

What world do you live in where Cowboy Bebop isn't considered one of the best anime of all time by the majority of fans?

Maybe its died down with time, but it used to be Eva and Bebop, and then everything else. And considering my opinion of Eva and Bebop, I've always considered them vastly overrated.

Like the entirety of Bebops story is really about 4 episodes long. And considering I watch stuff for the story... (to be fair, there are two really superb episodes of Cowboy Bebop, the Fridge episode, and the Mushroom episode).

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/ratings-anime.php Seems the love of Eva has died down a bit, but Bebop is definitely still wildly popular.

I forgot to mention Gungrave. I feel like the first episode and the following modern day episodes are very vanilla, the meat and beauty of the story comes when they start the flashback into the characters pasts, which thankfully spans most of the series' episodes. It starts in their teenage years as a gang of misfits, until they become the old-aged corporate mongers you see them as in the modern day. Afterwards you get a whole new appreciation for the characters who have fallen down the path of villainy. To me this is a highly underrated and underappreciated gem.

You could watch the new fate/stay night which started airing on the 4th (which looks REALLY good so far).  :)

The animations is amazing and is very accurate to the cannon material (at least the new one is so far).

And if you have not see fate/zero, I recommend that one also.

I didn't really like Bebop all that much. It was alright, but it always struck me as "undercooked." All the ingredients were there for a really great series, but they didn't do a whole lot with them. And the ending just left me thinking, "Wait...what?"

C- The Money of Soul and Possibility control

One of the most interesting anime I've watched. It's about a university student who works 2 jobs and is always broke so some supernatural stuff happens that lets him make money. I don't want to give out too much cause this is one of those anime that you really need to form your own opinion about.

Mekakucity Actors

No Game No Life

Pilots love song

Gatchaman Crowds

Outbreak Company

Asura Cryin

BTOOOM!

Valvrave the Liberator

Bakemonogatari

Nisemonogatari

Beyond the Boundary

Chaika-the Coffin Princess AKA Hitsugi no Chaika

Black Bullet

Akagame Ga Kill!

I Couldn't Become a Hero, so I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job.

Aldnoah Zero

The Irregular at Magic High School AKA Mahōka Kōkō no Rettōsei

Log Horizon

Brave 10

Bladedance of Elementalers

INVADERS of the ROKUJYOMA!?

World Conquest Zvezda Plot AKA Sekai Seifuku: Bouryaku no Zvezda

I was going to write a little about each series. but holy crap I just realized how long this post would get.

I agree with you that the series could have been so much greater, but it still holds a special place in my heart because that was the first true anime that I got into.

If you like the "bounty hunters in space " genre, you might like Outlaw Star.

Another great anime, though it's definitely a shojo anime, is Nana.

(And since we're all posting videos here, here are the opening sequences for the other two anime I suggested, Spice and Wolf, and Romeo X Juliet.

)

Gotta agree with captainproton about Outlaw Star!
The ending themes of that, "Hiro no Tsuki" and "Tsuki no Ie" by Akino Arai are what got me into Japanese music to begin with.

Serial Experiment Lain

Ghost in the Shell 1 and 2

and maybe... Black Lagoon.

You might also like Death Note (if not seen it already)

P.S. In my opinion, the movies were better.

(based on the fact you liked Ergo Proxy)

Back in action to develop the indie game that has been long overdue... Final Fallacy. A game that keeps on giving! The development never ends as the developer thinks to be the smart cookie by coming back and beginning by saying... "Oh bother, this indie game has been long overdue..." How could one resist such?
