I agree with the clear all for the database, perhaps when you first begin a new project. That way you can add in only what you want or need from the RTP and won't have to worry about packaging the RTP or not at the end.

And I also agree to the post above about sprites and even objects. I'd want something about 1 and 1/2 the size of the current Chibi size. That way they don't look as awkardly tall as RMXP, and not as horribly scrunched as VX / Ace.

The option could be just for when you click to begin a New Game. That way if they click to clear the database, they haven't done anything in their project yet to make a difference and can cancel / delete the project and start again. Or add a button to add / delete the default database with the understanding that anything customized will be overridden.

I would absolutely hate it if RPG Maker became 3D.

If we're going to talk about something "Simple" let's talk setting Move Routes. Perhaps a graphical, visual/drag'n'drop way to set them instead of the "Look at the map and count squares first" method we all know and love(?)

At what point will you hate when it becomes 3D?
I've said it already on this thread, as have others, but the issue with 3D is the level of difficultly and how involved it is to do the development.

For me, the moment I'll hate it is as soon as I start seeing requests asking "where can I find some good monsters and buildings that are properly texture mapped. I don't like the plain ones that come with it."

I would like to have the style (comparing RPG Maker 2003 being like Final Fantasy and RPG Maker VX being like Dragon Quest) of the next system being more akind to Mystic Quest, with a blend of traditional RPG and action RPG functions.

oh, and multiple themes like RPG Maker DS Plus wouldn't hurt either.

At the point it becomes 3D...

I love RPG Maker because it has a retro feel to it. These are the kind of games I like to play. If I wanted 3D I'd go somewhere else.

I think the most important things for the next RPG Maker are:

1. Remaster RPG Maker XP music, characters, and battlers and include them in the resources

2. Include modern tilesets, modern battlers, and modern characters, please. I can't even properly be creative due to the lack of flexibility of the resources.

3. Linux! Linux, Linux, Linux! Especially Ubuntu. Seriously, the lack of RPG Maker VX Ace in Ubuntu is making me want to stop using Ubuntu as my primary OS. WINE won't run it correctly. Spent days trying to get it working in WINE. I don't care if the Japanese developers only think there's one operating system. I don't care if it's a lot of work or if it isn't easy making it for Linux. If **I** were in charge, we'd jump through every hoop we needed to, even if we could only make sure every new version of RPG Maker was just STABLE IN WINE.

It's 2013 and Windows 8 was just released. A lot of people are moving to Ubuntu from Windows due to the somewhat of a failure that Windows 8 is. (Not REALLY a failure, but you know what I mean). Please, take Linux seriously. And now that Ubuntu 12.xx is out, Linux is more beautiful and more friendly than ever.

Honestly? Then stop using Ubuntu as your primary OS. The number of linux users (in particular, those that use linux on a non-work computer that would also be used for RPGM) is exceedingly small, certainly less than Mac OS X. It would be a decision that makes no business sense.

Really? They are? Got a source for this?

This part I agree with, to a limited extent; Linux can be quite beautiful and friendly, and in that same spirit, should be taken seriously.

What did you do? You ran it in WINE, right? How'd you get it running?

At best, I got it working, but I constantly got "out of memory" errors. Installing a different way, I got a hex code error upon loading RPG Maker VX...

Yeah WINE default settings except maybe me having to run it inside a window thing (memory is a bit hazy). I used the Lynx and Meercat versions of Ubuntu back then.

Amy, the problem with allowing scripters to mess with the UI is that I believe it's tied into the source code, which EB will never let anybody have access to. There may be a way to tie it into scripting without giving away the source code, but I don't see EB doing this for the simple fact that once the UI can be manipulated in such a way the incentive to have to buy the next maker will go out the window.
EB doesn't necessarily have to allow us to change the entire UI, just give us a limited way to add additional database fields that don't really do anything useful besides allowing you to type a word or number, which is tied to the database that can be accessed via scripts.

For example, "click this button to add a new text box", and then give that textbox a name or something.

Actually, I guess it'd be like giving us multiple note fields, except we can decide where we want to put it lol

If anything, having a new checkbox for a couple features I could easily script and apply with note-tags would not drive me to buy the next maker either.

Okay, I'm back with more mock-up screenshots. Back in my previous post, I suggested a modding ability that lets you add graphical interface mods instead of just adding text in a text box from scripts [e.g. <cooldown: 3>].

I then expanded on this idea by creating the next screenshots. Disclaimer: all screenshots below are photoshopped images, with parts taken from Google Images. No buttons are clickable, nor is this work in development by Enterbrain. More info below the images.

The menu has a more modern layout, though controversial: a ribbon. Some may like it, others do not. Just a designer's note you might not know, which is also true in the MS Office packs with ribbons: they resize dynamically like a responsive website, depending on your window width.

New here is the return of different layers, looking back from RPG Maker XP. Standard, layer 1 is behind everything, layer 2 is on top of layer 1 but behind the player, layer 3 is on the same layer as the player, layer 4 and 5 are on top of the player with layer 5 on top of everything.

Now something more interesting:

A Mod menu. Oh, and the blue line at the bottom? Part of the Start menu bar. :p

I am not good at creating logos, that is not my thing, so sorry for the lack of images at the ribbon buttons.

In this menu, you can access mods giving more features to this RPG Maker. Compare with Scripts, but where scripts are variables executed in a database's Note box — and in the Scripting Editor itself — Mods give you more graphical user interfaces. Think buttons, menus, sliders, checkboxes, etc.

Standard, the database Note box is not there, but it can be put back by a mod. And you see, even Enterbrain delivers some mods. Some delivered from outside the game, some bundled with the game (e.g. the notebox mod).

Auto-arrange lets RPG Maker arrange mods in a way that if you would get an error when executing a playtest because of in what order the mods and scripts are executed, it would be arranged in such a way that you wouldn't get any errors. It might not be the ideal arrangement for you as an advanced user, but new users may get errors in this part of the program while they don't know where the error exactly is or how it could be resolved. Mostly by just random juggling with the Script Editor in Ace. Now RPG Maker juggles for you!

Let's look at some mods here. If you don't like them, just turn them off. This list will be in all your projects, so no need to redownload all mods and scripts for each and every new project you make.

Turn-based Battles

You select your skill, you directly execute without selecting other party members' skills first. If you have downloaded another mod or script like an Active Time Battle mod, chances are that if you toggle on either one of these, the other becomes greyed out to prevent conflicts.

Advanced Music

More music options in your sound menu. E.g. looping a music file without the need to launch an external program; or multiple layered music (aka more music tracks).

High Resolution Patch

Let's say this one is added later by Enterbrain, hence the "patch" part — as a mod to not possibly break your game if enabled. If it breaks, you can always toggle it back off and continue from there without it.

Enterbrain's Android Exporter

Add an export menu in the File ribbon tab to export to Android phones and tablets.

Steampunk Texture Pack

Just to show it's not always adding features. You can edit almost anything in this program towards the user, using APIs and such. This one changes the layout as if it was the CSS of a website: changing the colors and textures of the menus, changing the icons and possibly the position of the menus. It might even arrange the menus in such a way that there is no ribbon anymore and arranges everything on a toolbar, like Ace now does. You see, anything is possible.

Okay, that was my post until here. I hope you can discuss some of the features I brought forward. So standard, you got a bit less than Ace (no note box to add simplicity to the new user), but with mods, you get more, easier and quicker.

Oh, and if the database window becomes too full, it will automatically add a scrollbar so you can add even more content to that window, :)

With many greetings,

Amy Zee
