Story:
This game takes place 10 years after Suikoden III and takes place in Harmonia. Sasari has decided that he is tired of seeing non-humans treated as if they are not people and is taking the fight to the government. He was slowly forming a rebel army that the Hero comes into after her father is killed. She decides to join the rebel army because her best friend and bodyguard is a kobold. Not long after she joins the army, Sasari is killed by an assassin and she takes over his army and starts to pursue the True Circle Rune that Hikusaak is believed to have. She also knows that they will need a new base of operations and more members and she starts with that.

Characters:



Cara: The young daughter of an aristocrat of Harmonia. Her family, slaves and servants included, live in the capital Marid. She never goes anywhere without her bodyguard kobold, Geni. She also believes that everyone should be treated the same and have the same right, no matter their race.

This game is close to a demo, once I get 2 of the shops to work that aren't working right now. I still need team members, mainly an artist and pixel artist.

Its cool, you will not be getting to the castle that you will be using in the demo. I will put a screen shot of it up when it is closer to getting to that part in the game.

Gave this a try. I was a bit befuddled on the opening exchange between Cara and her father, since the speaker wasn't identified. This issue persists with meeting Geni, and the dress-merchant, but not at the slave market (where players would, at least, see Cara's portrait). I'm noticing how the music is non-existant until you enter the blacksmith, Academy, or the temple. At which point, the song loops until one visits one of those locations (and even then, only if the song actually changes). With such a breath of cool songs in the music directory, such a thing absolutely baffles me.


Next point, the mapping, itself, is fine. However, there is some serious passibility isses here. In the Academy, I seem to recall climbing up the shelf in the upper-left corner of the military strategy room, and being able to walk all across that upper wall. I was also able to walk on top of the Runemistress' table, and walk right past the wall at the top of the staircase in the Inn.


Anyway, er, let's try collecting 1000 potch! Or, perhaps 2000 potch, since both the dress-merchant and slaver want 1000 potch. Probably more, since I want to purchase equipment, and stuff.


*Edit: Let me re-phrase my position on music a bit. To be fair, it's pretty standard for game music to loop. What I don't get is why the town and overworld map don't have their own music.

Okay, so here goes:

I really really wanted to like this game, because I love the Suikoden series of games.   I treasure my copies of the games and still take them out to play now and again.   That said, unfortunately I ran into quite a few issues in the game pretty quickly.

Mapping issues galore, you can walk up past the height of the stairs in a lot of cases, and given that you have to press enter to go up them at the "top" rather than going up to the top and moving to the next stage, this is a huge issue.   Not to mention the whole having to press enter to move between areas is a little strange to me.   It could make sense for the areas where you're going out through a door, but when you're just moving through screens or going up/down stairs?

I'll put these issues inside a spoiler tag since they include some game/story elements:

After getting 1000 potch, had to cheat to do that since you can find 300 potch in town and I then used CE to up it to enough to buy the dress and free the slave.

I tried going outside to gather the potch first, but once you go outside of town you can't get back in. That's a pretty obvious problem, too.

I decided to free the slave first instead of buying the dress. She joins my team, but has no face, not in the menu or when I decided to try going outside again.
Equipment is pretty improperly mapped.   Your shields can be equipped into rune spots for instance, and not into the shield location.   In the legs/feet section, necklaces and shoulder pads are options to be equipped there.

The issue that made me turn off the game though was after I used Kindness Rain to heal my party and it hurt everyone rather than healing them.

All of that said, I'd love to see you do more with this game, because anything having to do with Suikoden I'd love to see complete, but it obviously still needs a lot of work.

Thanks for all the responses. I am in the middle of fixing those things and waiting on my scripter to get back to me. I'm just glad that people are willing to play it. The only issue I haven't figured out how to fix is with the stairs. I'm aware how annoying to hit enter for going to different screens, but I have yet to figure out how to get it to when you touch it to enter the other screen and not go back to the pervoius on once you enter the next screen. Also anyone willing to help out with character artwork, monster artwork, music and anything else would be a great help.

The stair issue seems like it would be an easy fix to me.   If you want to keep it so you have to hit enter to go up, then just put an event above the point where you're supposed to be "at the top" according to your event that you interact with.   Make that event on the same level as the player, and then the player won't be able to go up past the other point.   Alternatively, you could just set the events so they trigger on player touch and send them upstairs rather than on action button.

I haven't figured out how to fix the equipment yet, but I am working on the rest. Any help would be helpful and make the game come out sooner.

Why not make the same weapon multiple times, increase each ones' stats by a little, put a note beside it, and offer it as choices to upgrade in events?

I'm still having a few issues with some of my scripts and until my scripter gets back to me, I will be putting this project on hold. The trade shop script is still buggy and not working properly, but other than that, everything else is working. I will let everyone know when I resume with this project. It will be a while before the game comes out because it is myself and my scripter mainly working on it. I have had help from a few others, but without more help it will take a while as I have a full time job and bills to pay. My other project will be Summoner X and I will be putting it up soon.

I do have a question... why would Sasarai - a Bishop of Harmonia - care about demi-humans? Sasarai is a puppet of Hikusaak - a clone of him, in fact. He has no power outside of what he is granted by Hikusaak  - his True Rune belongs to Harmonia and he's never been one to care about killing demi-humans before (he was one of the main forces to engage against Kobolds in Suikoden II and III). Indeed, he's never been shown to care about the differences in the castes of Harmonia. If he ever did turn away from Hikusaak, then he would be hunted by other Bishops and have his Rune removed (like they tried to do to Luc).

The idea that he'd be the one to stand up against the mistreatment of demi-humans is a bit... questionable. It would make a lot more sense to create another Bishop and have Sasarai be in opposition (maybe have his death be blamed on the revolutionaries... there's a lot of ways to spin it without breaking the pre-made characters).

It was just something that leapt out at me. ^.^

Ksi: Thank you for your input and while I understand that Sasari didn't have a problem attacking Kobold and such in previous games, it is my belief that after he saw the different races of different races work together more than once in harmony and live in harmony without the caste system that he decides that Harmiona needs a change as well. He already knows that other bishops will be hunting him down so he figured he would build an army and change the country he loved. I can't say more than that because that will spoil the rest of the plot.

I am also working on a Suikoden-based game, mine focuses more on the collecting of new recruits - I gave up trying to mirror everything from the series, but there is plenty of references - each character has two skills slots "Runes" with different spells or attacks, there are 4 levels of spells, max party size is 6, ect. I hope to get a demo of my game up in the next couple months

Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
