I have a confession to make: I'm not that big of a fan of JRPGs. A game like that has to be really good before it actually makes an impression on me since so many of them seem so stereotypical from a glance, even if they try having unique systems and implementation. When I saw this contest, the first thing I thought was that I would probably make a terrible excuse for a game with RPG Maker or any other game engine, especially a JRPG, but I let that thought sit for a couple days. The end result is what I'd like to call:

SUPER RPG GAME

Awesome title, don't you think? Super Role Playing Game Game is a story about some random kid who is forced to save a world he's unfamiliar with, the Goddess is destroying the land, blah blah blah, the usual. Except, this time, the entire game is an intentional joke from the plot to the characters, enemies, combat mechanics, and even multiple alternate endings.

Instead of going on for paragraphs about the game content, here's the intro sequence which should give you a good idea of what I'm going for. Everything is tentative so far and subject to change.

In addition to humorous dialogue, I aim to have several alternate endings that happen as a result of you, the player character, doing activities in exactly the way they shouldn't be done. One of them is very close to the beginning and if you watched the above video and paid close attention you should have a good idea of what it already is (well, half of it, anyway).

Story

The Goddess is destroying the world of Typicallia, that's bad, and you have to save it with the help of your omnipotent narrator friend and a small cast of stereotypical characters who come and go as they please.

Gameplay Features

  • Generic combat!
  • Generic puzzles!
  • Generic (but admittedly well-made) art assets!
  • No more than an hour of cringeworthy dialogue!
  • No less than five minutes of your life will be wasted!
  • Why are you still reading this!?
Current Progress

  • Story: Mostly sketched out in general terms, but everything is written in the moment.
  • Maps: Pretty far from done, but I only need to do a few more as this is a small, dialogue-heavy RPG.
  • Alternate Endings: One finished, two more planned at the very least!
  • Demo: Coming soon! Maybe around the halfway point I'll upload something, but that would require stripping my game of everything I don't need yet and I'd rather just do that at the very end of the contest.
Stay tuned for more updates if you're interested, and feel free to give me any of your thoughts or constructive criticism! Yes, please be as harsh as you'd like. I need it.

I hate competition.

Anyway, the intro is kind of long and the humor is kind of stale, to be honest. JRPG parodies have been done so many times before, what makes you project different?

I'm well aware of that. I'm just making this because it seems like a fun thing to do. The intro is a bit long, I'll admit, and I'm planning on making it a bit shorter and more subtle later. The real attraction here is in the alternate endings that I'm planning. It's a bit Stanley Parable-ish in that way.

...That said, since this isn't exactly getting the kind of reception I hoped, I might move forward to some secret plan B, or drop out of the contest if I can't think of too many better jokes. I appreciate the words, though, but I don't quite understand what you mean by "I hate competition".

> The alternate endings could be a selling point, though what I'm trying to get at is that making a sub-par effort and stamping "lololol joke game!" on a project doesn't really make the game memorable. If you are making a joke game, you should milk that aspect better, and it actually requires some deliberate thought! As you are in the early stages, and you seem to be making some changes in the meantime, however, I'll cut you some slack.

> I too had the same thought of making a terrible game for this contest, though unlike what you are aiming for, I made it so that the game was capable of causing some degree of psychological or physical pain, with the intent on creating the worst game ever submitted to the contest, if not the worst RPG Maker game ever made. That's what I meant by "I hate competition" :p

I'm extremely new to the whole RPG Maker community and the only thing I've ever used like this before was Zelda Classic almost a decade ago or something, so there's a pretty rough learning curve with getting things to look and act in a pleasing way. The intro scene I uploaded actually went through several major revisions before I felt it was decent enough to upload, and even then it's just the intro. I may possibly consider uploading one of the later scenes or alternate endings to drum up interest if it's required, since those are significantly more targeted towards certain gameplay elements. Also, I looked around for JRPG satire/parody-esque projects before but I didn't find too many, so I apologize again if this is a very trite thing to do by now. However, I will definitely take what everyone has to say into consideration as I think about my development process for this or the other idea I had in mind, which is significantly more practical but might require a lot more event planning. A lot more.

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
