I started working on
What Silver Shows when I was 19. I am now 22. Some things have changed in my life and I have changed too in some regards. I'm milder, more tempered (I might even claim watered down).
I see some themes I used to consider essential for the game as entirely pointless, machinations of an edgy teenager. One of those things is the constant swearing of my protagonist.
I still intent to give a rather dark, gruesome vibe to the game, but I'm compelled to have some meaning, a substance, behind it. The problem is that my idea of making him a deeply flawed character
ended up turning him into a practically unlikable one. While some people have stated that they understand and "feel" my protagonist, others said that they also do not like him very much. Not that my point was to make him likeable, but going to the other end of the scale is rather unwanted too.
The answer so far is pretty clear: "Just tone him down a little bit. Cut off the excess swearing and turn the expositional whining monologue to visual language, or dialog".
Therein lies the problem: While I'm working on the second part, I'm not sure if I can cut off the swearing.
It plays a very important role in the story that becomes more apparent in the later phases of the game. It explains some things about how he interacts with certain people, his relationship with them and how they have affected him. So, instantly, swearing becomes one of my weakest points (early-game adjusting to the protagonist) and one of my strongest points (better understanding of the past and how it affects what happens now)
Now, I obviously do not want a clear-cut "yes" or "no" to swearing. I would be content just having a healthy conversation and sharing of opinions with like-minded people.
Thank you for your time.
