TABEHOUDAI

SYNOPSIS

Have you ever wondered why in every game you are a rich hero that gets the girl and in real life... it at least ain't that easy? This game is an exploration of that topic, along with other themes. It's much heavier on social commentary than actual combat or gameplay, although there's some work being put into that as well. Some people that played it said it's more of an oldschool adventure game with RPG elements. It might not look it at first, but the game draws inspiration from such series as Persona and Yakuza

IMAGES/SCREENSHOTS
Game is in the process of transition from RTP to a custom tileset based on Celianna's resources. The characters, UI, FX and a bunch of other stuff are still complete placeholders.

STORYLINE/PLOT

As a warrior of the famed Nayas, you visit the Tabehoudai Kingdom to become its hero. Or at least that's what you'd really want to be happening.

STATE OF WORKS

We have a fully functional demo with the story and mostly finished interior designs. The demo includes first 30-60 minutes of pretty polished gameplay + a good amount of mechanics that will be used in later chapters.

The characters, UI, FX and Sound Design are still complete placeholders though. Already bringing in more artists on board to tackle that, but if you're interested in helping out (not for free), make sure to reach out!

Just got done with my play through of the game and thought it was pretty interesting! I like the concept of you starting from nothing and choosing to do something with your life. However, I feel that this concept and the game play clash. I really noticed it at the very end when listening to the lecture. He talks about curiosity and going off the beaten path (not following a script) but, throughout my game play i tried to do different things like going to all the housing and not going where I think the next part of the story is and I didn't find anything. In the end all i could do was follow the script that was laid out. Not sure if i wasn't looking in the right places or not or if the other paths are in the dialog options. If it is in the dialog options I feel that there are too many choices in some of the dialog options for me to tell ok if I choose option 1 i'm going down this path or if I choose option 2 i go down this path. Others I felt were very different but did not do anything in the end, specifically when talking to cassie in front of the guild in the real world and choosing the option to tell her she will grow old alone. It seems like that is something that would lead me down a different path but it did not.

Speaking of real world, I found it really cool going between the dream world and real world. When I was doing jobs in the real world I was always like ok when is the next time i get to play as the hero, but in a good way not a bad way. I also liked how in the real world the world looses its color then in the dream world is full of color. Really cool message there.

As for bugs and other things i found odd:

  • The dialog options in the beginning at the school, when i could hit cancel it wouldn't cancel out of the talk but choose a option. the option it choose seemed different for each NPC
  • In the main menu the box where it shows the date and playtime overlap with the gold box
  • I can walk inside of ATMs
  • The Tech jump says 1-hit but it hits 2 times
  • In the inn in the dream world when you buy your buddys a drink the face in the text for Barry is completely different
  • After I did 5 jobs for the blacksmith and bought the farmer a drink and she said she would love to give me a shot a working at the farm. I go there the next day and she acts like she does not know me (same dialog as before the 5th job i did for the blacksmith)
  • Not sure about the other armor but the Mithril Plate i picked in the dream world did not have any stats i could see like def, m.def, hp, etc.
Things i loved:
  • Nice star wars reference
  • talking to the flyer girl in the inn was hilarious, especially when she gave me the flyer while working a different job
  • combat style was really cool but it seemed very exploitable like the slimes did not attack often at all but the apprentices of everything did, not sure if that has to do with where they are positioned.
  • the dream world characters were a reference to the real world characters but with a twist
  • Cassandra Veronica Aurelia di Blanca Ronaldinha de Tabehoudai
  • I thought i was sneaky by taking all the carrots and corn, then i got turned down super hard lol

Overall and pretty cool game with a very interesting concept, can't wait to see where you take it!

Wow, thank you for such an in-depth review! I won't reply to every single bug. Taking a note of them and will do a cleaning sweep. Only thing I will say is that the combat isn't really balanced for now. I just wanted to make sure the player can get through it without dying to experience the story, so all the wapons, skills and stuff are just kinda there and that's it. Combat is pretty secondary in the game anyway :)

To your biggest point - gameplay clashing. This was done on purpose after seeing people play earlier demos. The first iteration had no dreams, just free exploration. And people got lost and frustrated. In this version, once you choose the path of curiosity, the options will open up. You will be able to find many hidden things. However, those will be pretty hidden, not obvious. Almost no hints and if any, they will be often pretty vague. However, people seemed to like finding those tiny little details and felt smart when they did. And felt even better when the game called them out for it - like your carrot situation. There is a bunch of other things like that and more coming. Just blocked in the demo you played. Opening it up from the start with all those dreams going on would be a chaos that's close to impossible to balance.

Update! The new build is linked in the main post.

Update notes:
  • major mapping and art update
  • revamp of the message system
  • new save system (hope it doesn't bug out)
  • a bit of a story flow adjustment (introduction of 1 new character)
  • minor bug fixes

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
Can someone recommend some fun story-heavy RPGs to me? Coming up with good gameplay is a nightmare! I was thinking of making some gameplay platforming-based, but that doesn't work well in RPG form*. I also was thinking of removing battles, but that would be too much like OneShot. I don't even know how to make good puzzles!
one bad plugin combo later and one of my followers is moonwalking off the screen on his own... I didn't even more yet on the new map lol.
time for a new avatar :)
