Tales of Einalis

About Tales of Einalis

Hello all! Tales of Einalis is an old school RPG made with RPG Maker VX Ace. This is my first ever RPG, and I hope you all will enjoy this. This game doesn't have many scripts, but it was designed to be simple. You could probably beat it on a weekday. This game was originally conceived for a contest, but with troubles uploading, it never was entered. It was put off for a while until we decided that we should polish it, and release it to the public.

Story:

Fingal and his friends arrive in the port town of Wayford looking to start a business and earn their daily bread. After doing some shopping they decide to meet in the pub. Before Fingal gets there, however, a crazy man hands him a necklace, dying immediately afterward. Apparently, this particular necklace has a curse placed on it to make the wearer deteriorate mentally. It also has the power to turn the world to stone. For this reason, the Dark Lord of Einalis desires it. Fingal, Murph, Ammardus and the people they meet on their journey must prevent the Warlord from getting the necklace, but also keep Fingal sane. The only way to destroy the necklace is to gather 3 artifacts of Einalis: The Apocalypse Shield, the Circlet of Dawn and the Robes of Present. The robes of present can make whoever wear them stay the way they are, the circlet of dawn returns things to earlier states, and the apocalypse shield can provide protection from the apocalypse. Each of these artifacts combined together is the only thing that can destroy the necklace. However, each of the locations of the artifacts is a secret only known to one person per continent: a human called a Peacemaker. Fingal and co. must find these peacemakers and get them to reveal the secret locations of the artifacts. Also guarding the artifacts is (no surprise here, folks) a powerful monster. Will Fingal destroy the necklace?

Will the Dark Warlord turn the world to stone?
Setting:

Einalis is a small group of obscure islands far away from the mainland. The conditions on these islands vary. The island of Shaybu is a dry desert, while the island of Ardit is a polar wasteland full of mountains. Not many people have heard of this place, and with good reason. On the outside, there doesn’t appear to be anything special, but delve into Einalis’ history, and you will discover that there is a long and complex history behind it. What is that history? You will find many ancient ruins there with the purpose of guarding rare and powerful artifacts. You will meet an ancient clan of people called peacemakers that guard these items, and try to stop the apocalypse. You will meet crazy shopkeepers and locals. Most of them are obsessed with tourists, because they barely get any. Have fun being a tourist!

I spoke to one guy in the Inn of the port town and it sent me straight to a black screen with some ominous music (I assume I got sent to the map where the intro starts).

Whoops! That guy shouldn't have been there... sorry about that! Thank you for reporting that bug. Until I fix it, for everyone else, Do not talk to the guy with the spiky orange hair in the inn in the first town you go to.

Well... This actually wasn't supposed to be a fan-made game for the Tales series (which is good). It's called Tales of Einalis because you're in Einalis. And you are experiencing one of its tales, haha. I wasn't thinking of the Tales series at the time, but after I named it the name stuck.

Just finished the plant boss, and here's what I think so far:

Good:

-The game makes me think, and the random battles aren't just attack and magic use. It's refreshing to play a game where I actually have to try.

-I like your characters, they have distinct personalities.

-The game throws you right into the action.

Bad:

-Some item pricing is wierd. For instance, the leather top and leather mail provide the same defense but one is 300 shils and the other is 100 shils.

-Plant boss was a little too easy (I beat him on my first try with all my characters at half health).

-Backstory has a couple plot holes (How did Ammon get a forge if he was banished, and how did a thief amass an army?).

Overall pretty good so far. I'll play some more later and tell you what I think.

@Lief: The item pricing for those 2 items is "weird" because more people can equip the leather top than the mail. It also provides you with a chance to be thrifty, and Ammardus won't yell at you. The plant boss was easy because it was the first boss. And, like a lot of first bosses, he becomes a normal enemy later on, and I didn't want him as an enemy to be too hard. As for the backstory holes, I wouldn't say they were holes... because they are revealed later. But I'll agree, it is very hard to keep up with the backstory in the intro. Ammon was not exactly banished from the entire "titan world". He was just banished from that "titan city" that was shown before the council was held. Ammon's forge was located elsewhere. I suppose I should have made it a little more clear. As for the thief, the army has to do with his curse, which I won't reveal, because it's a spoiler.

Anyway, thanks for the comments! I really appreciate 'em! Keep 'em coming.

Just got to the forest. When you first reach the forest, and Ammy and Murph are on the screen, after the conversation I went back into the cave because I realized that I was lucky in finding the straight path right through. When I came back out into the forest entrance, Murph was still out and Ammardus wasn't present on screen.

Also, I see you're using a Sprite Reflection script for the water. Note that on some of the curved water autotiles, the characters' reflections still show a bit on the actual ground.

@ McTricky: Yes, I think I nailed most of the game-breaking bugs, but you may come across a few visual glitches here and there. If you find a few more notable ones, I might fix it up later.

Just finished Mt. Burgiholm, and I got some more feedback for you:

Good:

-Love the character variety.

-Completing a dungeon on your first run is difficult, which encourages players to buy the return to town thingies and plan ahead of time which path through the dungeon they wish to take. This makes it feel more like an rpg.

-Leveling up is a rather quick process.

Bad:

-High random battle rate, low enemy variety.

-Bosses are somewhat lacking in strategy.

I also have some bug fixes that I can PM you so I don't spoil things for others. Regardless of what the pros and cons say, I'm really enjoying the game so far. Keep up the good work!

@Kaiser: That's awesome! I'm so glad that you've taken interest in this game! My next projects will be even better, I assure you.

@Leifman: After playing through that dungeon five or six times, I have swore never again to implement random encounters. They are too agitating. There's an accessory that lowers them later in game. As for boss design, you might notice that my #1 formula is a ton of health, and immunity to some states that prevent it from attacking. The Mt. Bergiholm boss is an exception. However, each boss (including Ice Lady) has a special skill that will frighten you. I won't reveal them though.

Dungeon battle variety kicks up towards the end of the game. Each of the dungeon enemies have a different style of fighting. Khutaka's Ruin enemies like to inflict states for example.

Once more, I thank all of you for playing this game, giving me feedback, and informing me of bugs. I really appreciate it! A n00b like me has a lot to learn.

Shopkeepers are claustrophobic, eh? Well you learn something new every day. :3

Though seriously I'm really enjoying it so far. Though, I noticed when I used smelling salts on Murph it didn't clear him from sleep, is it because it has a success ratio?

Really? That's odd. When I find out what's wrong, I'll upload the fixed version. Thanks!

I couldn't help ,but notice in the port town when the man dies, and you leave to go into a store and come back his corpse moved to his original location. Also a little more detail in your maps might help.

Edit: Upon further playing I notced magic does easily 2x-5x damage. Items pricing are crazy high and low, Leveling is quite difficult, In the forest I got poisoned on my first battle didn't by Antidotes and was essentially in a gay pride festival on all fours waving my naked booty in the air, there should be some source antidote in the forest/healing other then 1 potion, btw I bought 10 and got destroyed by the poison. The monsters also deal alot of damage...

Leveling is a bit difficult because I capped it at 15. Oh, and I think I put 3 potions in the cave. Item pricing is a bit high, but I wanted that to encourage the players to level up in the field. Speaking of shops and the field, most of the weapons and armor you buy in shops can be found in dungeons. It's wise to buy a few weapons, then search for the rest.
