Thanksgiving's coming up (in the USA); I'm wondering who's cooking what (if anybody).

Me...ever since I gave from-scratch pumpkin pie a go, m' in-laws have expected it of me this time of year.  I'm also making cake to keep the peace with the mother-in-law, since her birthday falls the day before Thanksgiving this year.  It'll be a two-layer black magic cake (coffee/dark chocolate cake; stays pleasantly moist for long than expected) with a coffee butter cream icing, will be lining the edge with chopped hazelnuts, pour chocolate ganache on top, then at the edge, a ring of the chopped hazelnuts, and drizzle white chocolate back and forth across the top.  Gonna be busy Wednesday night.

Do tell your contributions, please.

Oh, oh, oh, it's Thanksgiving! We-we-we are gonna have a good time!

My job is to sing a song using a drumstick in lieu of a microphone...

Umm..anyway. My main job on Thanksgiving is making Stuffin', not to stuff anything, just to eat on it's own. I always help with other stuff, but I never really make anything of my own. Trying to think of something this year.

I've been cooking Thanksgiving dinner pretty much since my mom started trusting me with fire. I do mostly traditional fare, and I've gotten pretty darn good at it over the years. So this year I'll be making:

The turkey

Celery and Sage stuffing

Skin-on mashed potatoes

Baked beans <-- this is a seminal favorite and a signature dish of mine.

Steamed sprouts

Apple, cherry and pumpkin pie <-- this is the one thing I might be able to farm out the work to family members

And of course there will be the cheese, venison summer sausage (thanks step-dad!) and veggie tray with dill dip, but that's just a matter of letting the kids have small knives and supervision.

Oh, man. I'm getting hungry!

We "do" Thanksgiving for our family, so....

Appetizers like hot cheese salsa dip and reuben dip and lil smokies and and spinnach dip in pumpernickle bread and cheese and crackers and veggies and stuff to keep the hungry guys OUT of my kitchen! (they come early!)

A small cold turkey and an extra cold ham get cooked today to supplement the 24 pound bird and the glazed ham for tomorrow.

Gravy (my specialty since I love good stock.)

15 pounds potatoes.

Glazed sweet potatoes.

My mom's herb stuffing - lots of chopping today and bread everywhere! No matter how much I make we never have leftovers... =[

Green bean casserole.

Brown-n-serve rolls with butter, cranberry sauce

Grape Salad, other vegetables, pickles and stuff

Cheesecake with farm-canned blueberry sauce

pumpkin pie

Mom brings apple pie (her crust is to die for!)

dirt cake (not really traditional but a big hit over here)

There are other things I'd love to serve, but with my limitations this is the best I am going to be able to do. We love having everyone over and treating them to a big meal.

Plus leftovers are like the hallmark of happiness over here. =]

There are few things in this world so satisfying as all the happy noises made by the people you love enjoying the food you make. I am so looking forward to this. The open-faced, day-after turkeystuffingmashedpotatoesgravyandcranberrysauce sandwich is a memory I savor the entire year!

And it is my birthday on Thanksgiving this year.

I came home from the hospital on Thanksgiving to a house full of relatives at my Grandmother's house.

So I guess it is in my blood.

Awww, I hope you have a great birthday tomorrow Deb!  They better treat you well!

And for the original topic, I am making a couple of side dishes - my "famous" green beans (maybe not really famous but a great alternative to the standard green bean casserole), some simple corn and rolls, and I may make some pumpkin bread to nibble on.

We go to my grandmother's house every year and my aunt does the turkey every time, so need to do that.  I will also probably do a veggie tray for some healthier pre-meal munchies.

Skin on or off for the mashed potatoes?

Just got done with the cake.  I think it turned out okay.  The pie, well...let's just say I'm better with cakes than pies, and the pie didn't turn out so pretty.  The cake, though....

Just no one please drop a frozen turkey straight into a deep fryer....this would be very bad.

I'm not actually cooking anything this year, I have two different things to go to, and my wife is at work, and honestly its probably just going to be a tiring day, but at least there is food.

Just as a note though: If you put celery in stuffing you are wrong.

mmm, what do you do for your green beans?
It's pretty simple, I saute some minced garlic and onions in olive oil.  Once it's good and brown, add petite diced tomatoes (I use canned, but I bet fresh would be even better!) and add in fresh green beans.  Then let them simmer until the green beans are cooked to your liking.  I don't have specific measurements, because I just put what I feel like is good based on the amount of green beans, lol!
