I've spent a ton of hours on borderlands 2 since the game was easy but had lots of depth. So the game would get very difficult and you could try out interesting builds. Games like "Fire Emblem:Awakening"/"Disgaea" series is also a good example of specialy raising characters.

So for me it's more about the depth that keeps me up.

For RPG Maker games(Note I havent played many!):

I like them rather short but very sweet. So I like them under 5 hours but with an amazing experience. I don't really see the fun in grinding unless I invested a lot in the game and want to unlock everything.

I don't think Borderlands counts as an "actual RPG". I mean, it has RPG elements, but I would classify it more as an FPS more than an RPG...

Anyways, back on topic, I spend about a good 80 hours on any commercial RPG. I remember putting about 100 hours into Star Ocean 3, about 70 into FF XII, 50 right now in Star Ocean 4 (have yet to do any more of the endgame content but I'm sure I'm getting very close to the end here), about 80 in Tales of Graces (did not do anything at all in that game aside from Zhonecage grinding), 30 in Okami (which is the one thing I love about the game, it has the perfect length but yet everything can still be done in a short amount of time), and anything else I can't quite remember off the top of my head, I'll have played a fair bit as well.

Ah they made a star ocean 4?  I have yet to play 3.  I did play two, I never finished it but i was a good 30 hours into it and if I recall that game has huge replay value with over 50 actual endings.  Not sure about the other star oceans as I've yet to play them.  It's nice hearing about RM games and around time frame wise; it gives me idea for my second project if I make one.

Its Diablo with FPS mechanics. The game is strongly an RPG. Character progression and loot are the majority of the game. If you actually have played it, you will quickly reaize that outside of the immediately obvious first person and shooting, it has nearly none of the structure of an FPS game.

Unless you consider Dragon Quest a turn based strategy game with some RPG elements... in which case I guess, OK?

I don't think just because borderlands has fps elements, it should be considered an fps. For example Fallout 3/NV is also an FPS/3rd person shooter but people mainly call it an rpg for it's RPG mechanics not the fps elements in it.

It's Skyrim with Guns (but not as deep [i don't think...haven't finished two I'm comparing to this part one) BL1 took me about 35 hours I did almost every quest.  I hear two is much longer though.  I got my 10 bucks worth though.

A turned based strategy game would be more like Final Fantasy Tactics, Fire Emblem etc.  Those are true turned based RTS games but have RPG elements in it (like lving up etc).  However, if either played like Starcraft or Warcraft then it def wouldn't be an RPG.  Dragon Quest series for the most part, (I think DQ Monsters wasn't but I never played it) is a straight up RPG.  DQ is a long game too about 40+ hours, RTS games for me usually take 20 hours give or take depending if I do extra content for the single player experience.  I won't even ever account for multi-player because you can have endless LAN games.  Longest LAN game I had was with Star Trek Armada 2 which was over eight hours til my friends computer crashed. (VICTORY TO ULTIMACJ! :) )

It was sarcasm. I was saying that if using a FPS combat system in an otherwise straight RPG makes it not an RPG, than nothing should be an RPG because every game could be classified as something else, such as turn based strategy. (Turn based strategy doesn't necessitate having movement).

Also, it is much much closer to Diablo than Skyrim. Procedurally generated equipment + skill trees. Its Diablo FPS. (Also, we have Skyrim with guns, its called Fallout 3, and it really does not play like an FPS).

Usually depends on the game, and how much there is to do. I think the most I have put in are games Like Skyrim, probably 250+ hours, and Tales of Vesperia (got the Vesperia Master achievement so have done everyting in that game). Usually I spend at least 60-70 hours on RPGs though, and I enjoy longer games rather than short (Not that the particular storyline needs to be long, but if there's nothing to do after the ending I get bored pretty fast.)

Diablo II is probably the game I have spent most time on in general though.

yeah... I spent so much more time in D2 than in any TES games... though for TES, I spent a whole lot more on Morrowind than Skyrim

I love RPGs but the problem with most of them is that..

if they start out strong, once you get about half way into the game its just grinding and repetitive monsters/puzzles

for example:

any and most Legend of Zelda games.

Before you get to use an item outside in battle or for any other purposes, they first teach you HOW to use it xD

after that its like i cant do anything else other than what they showed me what to do

its like the grapple hook on TLP, you get a grapplehook but you cant grapple anywhere you want, it has to be ether those symbol things on the walls or a specific tree type xD

my average playtime for games IF i like them will be 20+hrs

if i at the start it takes 30min of talking just to kill a couple of slimes that takes you 1-2min to kill then that game is dropped xD

but then again.. a good rpg does have to have a good background story and story overall so some talking here and there should be neccesary.

My fav GBA game called Golden sun oh man first time playing trough it took me about.. 60+ hrs probably more xD

but that is a hell of a  game i would recommend to all =D

I would say the lowest time I require from any RPG is 30 hours. If I can beat it in under 30 hours I either ignore sidequests or it was way too easy. For an RPG Maker game the lowest (If you're using a battle system) should be at least 10 hours.

On  a console the most time I've spent on a game was 108 hours on FFXII with Tales of the Abyss coming in with 96 hours. Looking through my 3DS activity log, I've spent over 500 hours on Fire Emblem! Yikes where did the time go...-.-

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
