I personally like the elemental concept. Like, he's used ice energy to attack the lavathing, but in doing so, has upset a balance and has this fire energy he has to do something with. He can't throw it back at the lavathing, but he could use it to cast Temper, boosting his allies' defense.
Instead of bipolar mage (which sounds more like a description than a title), maybe find something which alludes to balance or opposition.
Pendulum mage, libra mage, edgewizard--stateramancy means the art of balance, just like necromancy means art of death.
