The Crimson Mind

This game is the first of a series of short-stories, each focusing on different characters.
The short stories are inspired by a novel written by me, each introducing character backgrounds.

The game is 10-15 minutes long with two endings, both endings have two different versions.
There is not much gameplay as it's solely story driven.

The Story

The plot focuses on a boy called Rilris. His mother died at a young age and he was brought up in a difficult living environment.
The story is about Rilris figuring out the means to deal with that hardship.

Game Features

Endings based on your actions through the game.
A game length of 10-15 minutes
A dark short story based in the modern world setting.

I have no idea about why people didn't play this game yet, it's surprisingly very good.

It's short but well made and at the end it left me wanting to play and know more and more.I know it's a bit early to judge but the plot and the characters seems interesting and mature, this is sadly a not so uncommon problem that affects a lot of families and you showed it very well in this game.

I was curious about Ray all the time, there's something mysterious about him, I must say that he's an intriguing and fascinating character. I have to admit that it felt more satisfying to kill Rilris father, I wanted him to pay for everything he did to Lea, this means that you did a good job on the character development even if the game itself is short.
The mapping is good, not amazing but not bad either, it does the job pretty well, I like how you mixed the Mack and the Futuristic Tiles to create a modern setting.

There are only a couple of small mistakes, everything else seems fine though:

These I pointed out in the rectangles and circles are all mapping errors and the door in front of Rilris has a problem, everytime I interact with it it closes and then open by itself again without a sound playing.

Despite these small mistakes it was very good and I reccomend to everyone to check it out.

Just a question:

Will the final decision that I took affect the later games? I'm kind of curious about this.

Anyway, you did a good job! I really see nothing wrong with this game and I'm looking forward for the sequels, it felt so worth it to spend 20 minutes playing this.

Thank you so much!

I really hoped people would like it and I'm happy you do :)

I can fix those errors right away and will do.

To answer your question, I really want to be able to solve that the decisions in this game could somehow carry on to

the followup project. But I didn't find a solution for it yet.

I'm really happy you enjoyed it, can't stress that enough.  :)

PS: before I released the game I had to pull because that door crashed the game, so i fixed it, but still didn't manage to fix it  :D

Maybe you can add a Save File Transfer Script to make the players able to transfer their savefile in the later games (I'm pretty sure that there's a script like that around), if you find it just be sure that everything in the database and in the Script Editor will match perfectly between the two (or more) games or else it won't work. Or maybe you can simply add choices in this sequel, a starting choice that will let you choose if you decided to

kill Rilris father or not
and depending on which choice you'll take, the game will change. For the door you just need to add a Direction Fix to the event and it will be fixed.

Again, very good game. I'm looking forward to see how you will continue the story.

I want to make it work no matter what so I'll find a way.

If all else fails I'll just stick to what you said, letting the player choose in what he chose at the start  :D

Thank you again :)

Hey there Atasuke

Just played your game and made a Let's play of it and here it is!

https://youtu.be/QdUYKOJBQyw

If you don't really feel like it because you might be busy fending of dragons in a far away land and stuff and stuff

here's my written review

Wow! your good at story writting i've enjoyed it very much. I'd read your books! go do that ok?

Loved the characters and the whole interaction with all of them.

Music was chosen well, it made a nice ambiance.

Maybe the boss fight agains the dad was a little too much, it was fun don't get me wrong, it was just a little out of place i guess.

Anywho, glad i played it and i hope you make others very soon!

Have a good one!

Hey!

I've watched your let's play through of it and enjoyed it all the way :D

(was also secretly praying not to have you encounter any bugs which broke at one of the typos :D )

Thank you for your compliments they make me want to do more of them.

The way you presented things was really entertaining.

Thank you for playing it and I'm very happy you enjoyed it and I could see your reactions to it, it was very rewarding for me to see them :)

I'll bookmark this review and just watch it whenever I need inspiration :p

Also when you said "Ray is not human" right off the bat i just started laughing like hell xd especially with the pretty blond part in it :D

I guess with the dad fight, I wanted a little bit of interaction to show theres no way back and that the dagger is not a simple dagger.

Many hated the grocery part and in some way now i just look at people doing that part with sadistic anticipation :D

Glad you liked it!

Seriously, you got something with that writing of yours, polish it and don't let it go!

I've got to say your indoor mapping and tiles looks really good, especially the lighting. Anyways I've got a slow internet, the download seems to be stuck on 32%...

I also have slow internet so i know the pain xd *uploading patch as we i type, only takes 1.5 hours*

Anyway I hope you'll enjoy it when you get to play it :)

Update:
- There's now an RTP inclusive version
- Changed the Graphic of the dagger
- Updated some of the credits

I've made some custom art for most of the characters in this "world".
I'm planning to add the custom art to this game as well as soon as all of them are finished to maintain
consistancy

I enjoyed it for a quick story/game! I was disappointed it was so short to be honest!

The plot was very intriguing, it definitely wanted to see more, especially curious about Ray's origins, Especially after the second time I went through it.

You did a pretty good job making the father out to be a monster and leaving the audience/player with absolutely no sympathy for his eventual demise (kind of similar to "I spit on your grave" or "Last house on the left" type of situation there (though not going as far as those movies and remakes did!). I certainly wanted to kill him the first time playing it through! It left a vague vision of Ray, which I will assume the continued plot revolves more around him). The fact that Ray just blew him up when you choose to spare the father's live kind of shows where the plot is going (which was kind of unexpected).

I could also see the plot in Rilris dealing with the investigation of the father's disappearance in future games. I want to know the lies he'll eventually tell the cops!
You certainly left a lot open in this short game, it makes me like to play more!
Also, I liked the lighting effect used between the screens. Did you use a sort of script to achieve that? (I'm a n00b at making these games, humor me if the answer is obvious :p )

I'm glad you enjoyed it :)

When I was making it I wondered how could I make it longer but still not drag on,

But I really couldn't find any way so I just made it short like this.

The lighting effect used between screens is actually not intended, it's my negligence of turning off the lighting system for the duration of the

map transfer, but the way I set up the system in that game made my options limited so I went with it. :p

I'm almost done with the second short :)

It's going to be longer than this one which is to be fair, not that hard :p

About the dad, I always force my friends to play my games before release so they can tell me

how to make it better, or in this case his character more hateable, and they gave me a lot of

helpful advice :D

so hopefully tomorrow i get to go home from the hospital i've been here for 5 days already and it's driving me mad. I miss my family like crazy but at least I get to use my own toiletries and my own clothes. My mom is coming to visit soon i can't wait to see her cause i miss her the most. :kaojoy:
Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
