The GENERAL Shin Megami Tensei Thread!

Yo, what up RPG fans. Do you like SMT? Talk about here. Talk about everything here.

Discuss what your favorite demon is.

Discuss why Mara is the greatest RPG monster enemy ever.

Discuss why the hell Hitler is a final boss in Persona 2.

Everything.

BUT WAIT JAWNSUNN, WHAT THE HELL IS SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI?

Shin Megami Tensei is basically a series that started back in 1992 for the Super Famicom/Super Nintendo. Before SMT, there was Megami Tensei which was a series based on the book Digital Devil Story. The series focus on philosophy and makes the player question at times, "Am I doing the right thing?"

JAWNSUNN, THERE ARE SOO MANY SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI GAMES! THERE'S SMT: PERSONA, SMT: DIGITAL DEVIL SAGA, SMT: DEVIL SUMMONER...!

Whoa, slow down there. Let me tell you that there are only 5 SMT games. I, II, III: Nocturne, Strange Journey, and IV. Everything else is a spin-off of the SMT series. Even though it says Shin Megami Tensei on the box, they are in no way related to the 5 SMT games. By a smart move from Atlus, they decided to a add SMT to every spin-off after the release of Nocturne.

If you want to learn about the other MegaTen games then read this article for Hardcore Gaming 101.

Here's the original topic of this thread: Shin Megami Tensei 4.

Shin Megami Tensei 4

So this really badass JRPG is coming out to the West pretty soon, as in "9 days soon", so let's start hyping it up, yo.

HEY JAWNSUNN, WHY SHOULD BUY THIS GAME?

The SMT series is made out of pure quality. They all contain great themes that stand out from the crowd of other JRPGs. It's battle system is amazing as well. It's turned based, but the Press Turn system makes it feel alot more intense and action packed as it gives the player many situations. Oh, and the music kicks ass.

JAWNSUNN, YOU AREN'T REALLY CONVINCING ME...

Did I mention you get all of this for every first print copy?

Frick. Yes.
SHOULD I PLAY THE FIRST 3 GAMES FIRST BEFORE THIS ONE?

No, SMT4 is a stand alone story like its predecessors. If you have a PS2 though, considering purchasing the SMT lineup from Amazon(Digital Devil Saga 1&2, SMT 3:Nocturne, Persona 3&4, Devil Summoner Raidou). They all cost around the $25 range and you'll be supporting Atlus since those games are still being reprinted.

DOES THIS CONTAIN SOCIAL LINKS?

No, but you can kill your friends! Yay!

JAWNSUNN, HOOK ME UP WITH SOME OF DAT GAMEPLAY, YO.

Holla.

get hype everyone

3Ds. It's there on the image.

I think the NA version is going to be released soon (Or I think it already did, I forgot... I wasn't really taking note of it).

Yeah, it's for the 3DS and it costs $10 more than your average 3DS game. Considering what you get, plus the amount of hours of enjoyment you'll be getting in this game, $50 is pretty much worth it.

And, no I'm not paid by Atlus. Just spreading the love, baby.

The first game I played on the series is SMT Nocturne, which still has that favorite spot in me. After that, I expanded to the Persona series, Digital Devil Saga, Raidou Kuzunoha, Devil Survivor, and the old games (Including Puzzle de Call!).

I must say that they are very addicting and very nice to play with. Lots of choices to make, and you would need to play it more than once to reach a completion. It's a must-have for me.

The thing that I'm concerned with is that I'm not a fan of 3DS... but if they remake it for a PC or other console with a large screen, then I'll go buy myself the console and that.

I've added a 10 minute video onto the thread. I mean, people could have googled it themselves, but having it on here to give someone an impression is a lot more convenient.

Does this one continue on from the SMT 1 & 2 line again or is it something different?

I'm not really sure. Since Nocturne had this thing called the Amala Network where there are separate universes, I don't think it connects to SMT 1&2.

Well, I do think the whole "having a devil summoning computer in feudal times" is a sure sign that it isn't connected to those games.

From the gameplay and other aspects its seems to be something to do with time travel, plus there's also a female Black DEMONica user that makes an appearance for you SMT Strange Journey fans~

It could be based on the Law ending of SMT 2. Hell, the feudal city could be built on the Megido Ark itself.

Hmmm, possibly, since SMT 1 & 2 were directly linked

Just got this in my sub box:

30 bucks back for both games? I sure wish I had money to throw at Atlus and Nintendo.

Hopefully when it comes out on Europe, you guys will get the same deal. Special box, club nintendo deal, everything.

I think you guys get the game at late Summer, early Fall.

Nintendo did account for the region locking issue though.
http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2013/07/nintendo-president-defends-region-locking/

In an interview conducted at E3 and recently published by IGN, Iwata acknowledged that "from some people’s perspective, [the region lock] might seem like a kind of restriction." But he added that each different region "has its own cultural acceptance and legal restrictions, as well as different age ratings. There are always things that we’re required to do in each different region, which may go counter to the idea that players around the world want the freedom to play whatever they want."

"I hope that game fans can understand that the industry isn’t doing this solely out of business ego," Iwata continued. "There are some reasons behind it."
Sounds like legitimate defense to me. I just hope there are publishers out there to release good Japanese games outside of Japan.

No one seemed to care about age rating when Ar Tonelico 3 came out, just saying ¬_¬

Though I already have Fire Emblem Awakening. I think that deal is advertising/foreshadowing the Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem game that they're developing.

I don't think Atlus even publishes in Europe. British friends have told me that Square or NIS have released a few of their titles and a lot don't even make it over from the NA releases.

Also, I call BS on that justification for region locks: an import retailer has to conform to local standards for what they offer and an individual who imports directly is sophisticated enough to know what kind of content they're getting themselves into.

It's somewhat different. Let's say that they follow separate timelines and storylines (Meaning you can play them at any order without missing much), but the general idea is there (YHVH or something of the sort, and the hint-hint of Hijiri being someone who was cursed back from the old games).

Yeah Atlus rarely EVER publish in Europe, and when they do there isn't even a  lot of copies that are out. Not to mention  find it rather ridiculous I have to wait near enough 6 months for the games that are out in the US already. SMT Soul Hackers and Etrian Odyssey 4 don't even have a set date for Europe. If would of imported the two months ago like I did with SMT Strange Journey, Persona 1 & 2 and Etrian Odyssey 1-3...

Hopefully that new partnership between Atlus and NIS America can get games in a timely matter.

And glitch-free. *cough*ghostlight*cough*

so hopefully tomorrow i get to go home from the hospital i've been here for 5 days already and it's driving me mad. I miss my family like crazy but at least I get to use my own toiletries and my own clothes. My mom is coming to visit soon i can't wait to see her cause i miss her the most. :kaojoy:
Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
