"The Legends of Saneterre - The Fall of the Angels" is a traditional RPG. It takes place in the same universe as a novel I published called "The Legends of Saneterre - The Endless Cycle" (only available in French). However, the video game will be completely playable and understandable without having read a single line of the novel. It will only add depth to the universe in general.
I also have to say that this game will be published in French at first. It should be released in a few months (probably in August). However, an English translation will come very soon after (before the end of the year) so I asked Archeia if I had the right to present my game here. She said yes so here I am ! Since the game will be released in English, it was important to me to get some feedback from the english-speaking community.
SYNOPSIS (it will contain spoilers, including the first big twists in the story)
The story begins on the floating continent of Saneciel. It is the kingdom of the angels, the masters of the humans. Some humans also live there, like our hero, Heimdall (around 16 years old). He is about to take a test to become a paladin, the highest distinction in the angels' army. He is accompanied by Loki and Nina, his two childhood friends, who are there to help in the tests. Everybody is very proud of Heimdall, as he is the first human who has a decent chance of becoming a paladin.
At the beginning of the game, they will go to a cave where the first test will take place. After succeeding, Heimdall will meet the queen of the angels who will explain the final exam. He will have to get to an old shrine and pray in front of the dragon god's statue. He will be accompanied by a paladin named Pamela, an angel who will act as his examiner.
On their way to the shrine, they will spot flames in the distance : one of the villages of Saneciel is burning. Heimdall and his friends enter the village immediately, only to see that the population has been massacred by an unidentified man who looks like a wizard. He seems to be very interested in the story of the dragon-god and its whereabouts (the dragon was an important figure of the war between the humans and the angels a few centuries before, but had disappeared ever since).
Heimdall, who was a very lively boy, seems shocked and upset for the first time in his life. He tries to defeat the wizard but ends up defeated himself. He doesn't understand how a man could kill all those people almost gratuitously. He decides that becoming a paladin is still his priority, because he wants to become powerful enough to be able to stop that kind of tragedy from happening again.
They finally arrive at the tower which leads to the shrine. They meet Pamela, who had been waiting inside, and tell her about the tragedy that just happened. They resume the test and are amazed by the power shown by Pamela, who is an experienced Paladin. They finally arrive at the shrine, in front of the dragon god's statue, and Heimdall starts praying, as he was told to do to complete the test. He is about to succeed and become a Paladin. His friends Loki and Nina are there, watching their friend with pride and emotion. That's the moment when Pamela draws out her sword and, without a second thought, pierces through the heart of Nina. The angel was actually a traitor who used the exam to seize a legendary artifact present in the room, and to set up Heimdall and Loki for the crime. She could just kill them, tell everyone that they tried to steal the artifact and she tried to stop them but the artifact was destroyed during the fight. The ideal scapegoats. However, something will happen that will prevent her from killing Heimdall...
The death of Nina will be the turning point in the life of Heimdall. His innocence lost, he will decide to look for Pamela in the world of Saneterre (where she escaped), in a quest for vengeance.
I think I've said a lot about the scenario of my game (it's not easy to write all this in English...), but this is only the first few hours. My game will be around 40 hours long (it already is, I've been developing it for more than a year now), and around 60 hours if you decide to do all the sidequests. The plot will get a lot richer than that, with many other twists and unexpected developments. I have written the scenario very seriously, as I have done for my novel, so that the player will keep being interested and want to continue playing the story.
FEATURES
- This will be a traditional RPG, with random battles (but also some big monsters that you can see, a little like the FOE from Etrian odyssey), and a turn-based system.
- Sideview battle system, using victor sant's engine (It allows you to do beautifully animated skills)
- I will use parallax mapping on many of my maps (see the screenshots section)
- Inspired by Suikoden, the heroes will find a devastated village that they will have to repopulate. You will be able to recruit more than 50 villagers, who will then have activities in the village (open shops, a casino, raise cattle, grow vegetables, open a pub, ask riddles, and so on...). For the shops, the quality of the products will rise with the number of villagers. Many of the sidequests will come from these villagers. (either to recruit them, or after they have been recruited)
- There will be 5 playable characters (a few more for those who don't stay) : 3 mandatory and 2 that will have to be unlocked. They will be able to go as far as level 999 (but I'm still thinking about that. I may put the limit lower, around level 500).
- The skills and magics will be learnt through gaining levels but also through equipment. If you keep your equipment through enough battles, you will be able to learn the skill permanently (as in Final Fantasy 9 for example).
- There will be an optional dungeon called "The endless maze" : this name was given to it by adventurers because no one has managed to see the end of it. It will be made of many floors and the players will be able to reach it early in the game. However, the battles will become a lot harder as you advance, so you will have to come back every now and then if you want to advance further (a minimum level will be required to enter each floor). In this dungeon, you will be able to find some of the greatest accessories and pieces of equipments, but also powerful magics and skills.
- A little poker game will be implemented (thanks to cacao for that one) and you will be able to exchange your chips for great prizes. (You will need to recruit the villager first).
- A new game + will also be implemented (thanks to Yanfly for this one) : when you finish the game, you will be able to create a clear file. Starting a new game + will let you access a special shop at the beginning where you will have interesting bonuses (earn more experience for example). The money you can spend in that shop will be limited but will increase every time you finish the game. I haven't decided yet, but I think you could have access to everything after you've finished the game 3 times maximum. With this bonus shop, you will be able to become stronger early in the game and therefore you could beat some of the bosses that couldn't be defeated in a first playthrough. By beating them, you will have access to new endings that will shed some new lights to the remaining secrets of the story.
- By the end of the game, you can obtain a legendary weapon for each of your characters by completing very hard sidequests), inspired by the "fell weapons" of the "tales of" video games. Those weapons will get stronger after every battle, starting with a very small power but eventually becoming the best weapons of the game. Those are the only weapons that you can transfer in a new game +.
There are many other features but I think I've described the most important.
The characters
You can see their pictures at the top of this post. I think I've said enough in the synopsis but I can give more details later if need be.
THE SCREENSHOTS
And here come the screenshots. Don't hesitate to give me suggestions about them. I'm willing to hear your advice.
And an "overworld-type" map (floating island)
I've used many ressources found on this forum. I will credit all of them in my game of course. I will not mention all of them here but I've used many graphics from Pandamaru, Avery, Ayene, Lunarea, Candacis and so many others. A big thank you for your generosity.
Please, don't hesitate to tell me what you think. And I hope my English was not too bad (there was a lot to write !).
