Demo available NOW! See download link below
SYNOPSIS
Explore the massive dungeon known as the Spire, a haven to monsters! Make friends and even more enemies as you fight to unravel the secret and save your home.

Wield magic and tools to solve puzzles and traverse obstacles throughout the Spire.

Fight monsters in a single-character turn-based combat system, boosting attacks with timed hits and parries, and making use of magic Runes to concoct spells.

Lots of secret passages and hidden treasure to find and uncover!

I recently released a demo that encapsulates the first two areas of the game while the game is still in development.

STORYLINE/PLOT
For a millenia, a massive tower full of monsters known only as the Spire has stood, out in the wilderness on the outskirts of the known world. You hail from a nearby mountain village that overlooks the valley where the Spire resides, such that the monolith always rests on the horizon.

One night, after an encounter with wild monsters and a near-death experience, you awaken from hearing voices in a fever dream, and find yourself in possession of a sword that glows when held in your hands. Not long after, the Spire begins emitting an eerie bright light, and suddenly everyone you know transforms into a mindless monster... Everyone except you. Head swirling with emotions and confusion, one stark voice speaks in your mind:

"Confront the Spire."

The demo got a slight update, now version 1.3, to address some game-breaking bugs, and fix up some other stuff. If you've played through already, it won't add much more, but if you've not finished your playthrough, I'd recommend updating! Your existing save file will still work. Thank you!

Played the demo, this was really nicely done, can recommend! Liked it from the very beginning, the menu tune and how it transitioned into the game. Good graphics and sounds and fun animations. The battle system was certainly something different and the game kept me hooked. I also liked how fluidly everything ran, from the map transitions to the saving. Some thoughts/criticisms:

-I'd map the map to another key, having to stretch my arm to press "0" repeatedly was kind of annoying

-I'd mark save points on the map, as well as "barrier points" with different colored lines depending on what was blocking you. I can understand not wanting to guide the player to much, but it just got annoying for me. In one instance for example I got a bit stuck and thought that I'd missed something from earlier and had to run the whole dungeon around, and having to fight everything again got kind of annoying. Also when finding new items there was a lot of aimless running around to look where to go. There were so many fights already, that having to fight them again when running around got on my nerves (At least maybe make pressing the shift key with the shield make you block encounters for 5 seconds without having to hold the key down).

-With the pillar puzzle I thought at first the whole game was somehow bugged, since at first I dropped the pillar 1 square too high, and couldn't push the box onto it, even though it kind of looked like it was in place. And then when even the golem didn't react to anything, I thought the whole room was bugged :D Also, there was some passability "errors" near the golem - you could kind of stand on air on one diagonal line and then there was one stalagmite you could pass through, I think.

-Did I miss some instructions or was there a quick way to switch your runes with some key? It was mildly annoying having to go to the menu every time to switch the field skill. Some note talked about being able to use different number keys, but I managed to only map it to "1" key.

-The layout of the city was kind of confusing for me...

-In the intro scene Eskil and grandpa were sure standing mighty close to one another :D

Anyway, really nice game, good luck with the project!

The man, the myth, the bro Riggy2k3 finished his playthrough of the demo!

On another note, rpgmaker.net's annual community game awards, the Misaos, are happening, and The Looming Spire was nominated for most promising demo! Vote here: https://rpgmaker.net/misaos/2022/vote

RMMV
Just tried the demo and really liked it. Combat is a blast! Love how fast-paced it is. The block/parry event is a lot of fun, but I suck at timing those chain attacks and bursts LOL

Also... various behavior sprites are a big plus. Made your cutscenes stand out. Very well done!

Anyway, solid demo! I'm a fan! :kaojoy:

I died aged 27 to cancer. Then I was reborn in a South-American state. I retained all memories and skill and had a goal from my previous life I needed to finish, but now I was just a 1-year-old girl capable of only smiling at others.

Found a critical bug the other day with the time system that would have caused none of the NPCs to spawn. Since I use dev mode to test time-based stuff, I didn't catch this for way too long!
