The Luna Seal

Story Synopsis

This game focuses more on story than action therefore there will be cutscenes where there is just dialogue and not much else, some cutscenes will be kind of long so if this isn't your cup of tea then you might want to find another game thank you.

You play as Mist and live on the island of Serenity in the village of Willow with your adopted mom and close friend who lives a couple of houses away. You receive a mysterious note from a group called the Peacemakers, who once ruled the island of Serenity, asking for your help.  A former King is bent on revenge is searching for the very artifact that nearly wiped out an entire island. With a new and recent discovery about the artifact, puts the island and its citizens in jeopardy and finding the artifact before the former King is dire. It will be up to you to find the artifact before the former King and save the island of Serenity.

The Luna Seal is more than a game about saving the island of Serenity. The Luna Seal is more about Mist's journey to find out who she is and where she comes from. Alone with her two best friends Holden and Celeste together the three will embark on a  journey filled with self-discovery, relationships will be tested and truths revealed.

The Luna Seal is a not a linear game. The choices you make will have a direct effect on the game as a whole and will determine which path you take in the game. How the story ends will be determined by you.

Warning: This game does talk about adult themes such as rape and has mild cursing. It is only a few scenes but I just wanted to mention it just to be on the safe side.

Setting

The Luna Seal takes place on the island of Serenity. An island racked with violence and peace. This island was founded by the Peacemakers and because of the their determination to seek freedom and equality for the mages' has led to them being the most hated and most respected order in history. It was the Peacemaker who shaped the island into the mystical island that it is now thanks to the many power struggles and countless magical battles that have taken place on the island.

Characters

Across your journey you will play as one of three main characters depending on the choices you make:

·      Mist is twenty-two years old and lives with her adopted mother in Willow Village. She has spent the past couple years searching for her birth parents but every lead ends in a dead end. Mist’s good heart and trusting nature often lead people to think of her as weak but she is anything but and will prove anyone wrong who thinks so.

·       Holden is twenty-four years old and is a childhood friend of Mist. Holden has had a pretty rough childhood but managed to make it through thanks to his loving mother and devoted friend Mist. But his rough childhood and recent death of his mother has left him angry and constantly searching for those who killed his mother.

·       Celeste is twenty-five years old, Mist best friend and former solider in the King’s army. After her father disappeared while on a mission for the King, Celeste has searched tireless for any leads about her father but so far has turned up nothing. Celeste will not give up the search for her father no matter how long it takes.

Other characters that may join your party are:

·       Noah a rogue with a dark past

·       Cassandra a priestess longing to do good outside her village

·       Gareth and Elizabeth the headmasters of the Peacemaker Order

·       King Nolan the King of Serenity and Cora Island

Features

·     Non-linear story. You chose one of three paths to take, how you complete quests and which ending you get depends on the path you take.

·       Two huge islands to fully explore plus a third depending on the choices you make.

·       No random creatures and realistic loot. You will be able to see the enemies and they will not drop gold or items but parts from the creature to sell as loot.

·       Multiple Endings. There is a good, bad and normal ending. How you get these different endings depends on the path you take.

·       Plenty of Side Quests. Most side quest have a story and aren't your typical fetch quest. You will get a chance  to learn more about the island and its citizens.

·       Join a Guild. Join the Honorary Guild and help them bring down the thieves guild once and for all.

·       Go to School. You may enroll in school and take classes to learn new spells and talents or new recipes to cook with.  (Removing this for now, might add it back in later.)

·       Personal Quest. Each party member who joins your party comes with a personal quest which you can do to increase your relationship with them.

·       Relationship System. Through certain events in the game you will get the chance to get to increase your relationship with your party members. You can also speak with your party members at the campsite to learn more about them.

·       Reputation System. The reputation system is integrated into the main story and will determine which characters and quests you unlock.  (Removing this for now, might add it back in later.)

·       Survival System. In the Luna Seal you need to eat and drink in order to survive.

·       Cooking System. There are plenty of recipes and ingredients to satisfy your hunger.

·       Quest Journal. Modern Algebra’s Quest Journal to help keep track of your quests.

·      Achievement System and more.

My Thoughts

This is my first project. I have always had a interest in creating video games so when I found out about this software I took advantage of the opportunity to finally able to do so. I spent countless hours reworking my story into something interesting before finally settling on what I have now. I wanted to create a game where it was more about the characters journey and the story line wasn't linear. All the characters in the story are connected in some way and you will find some surprises alone the way as you get to know each character. I hope you will come to care and love the characters as much as I have. I taken the time to see that each characters has a deep and enriching history that you will want to explore.

So far over 120 hours have gone into this game and though I'm 90% done with the main quest, I still have a lot left to do with all the others features I'm adding into this game. The different story paths will allow you to replay the game again to experience the story from a different path. I'm hoping to have a demo up this month.

Demo Changelog

7/4/2013- Original Release version 1.0

7/10/2013- version 1.1 released, fixed minor bugs and polished some gameplay

9/1/2013- version 1.2 updated demo-

Fixed Hunger and Thirst System so that it depletes more slowly

Fixed Night and Day System so that time doesn't pass by so fast

Finished missing dialogue for a couple of scenes

made it to where player can select multiple food and drink items for the hunger and thirst system

removed maid events in the castle, events are a little off

Various typos and spellings fixes

And other small game polishes... gameplay, enemies, etc....
Next Demo Update

Time System Tweaks- I am aware it is surprising when a villager disappears but this to do with the night/day system, all characters outside are on a switch so until I find a better way to make them disappear more natural I'm going to leave it like it is.

The tweaks are to extend the time to make the days last longer.

Spelling, Grammar fixes

Cleaning up any errors or corrupt files

I was planning on releasing a demo before the month of June was up but I had somethings to deal with so that got put on the back-burner. I'm working on the demo now so I'm hoping to have it up by the end of this week if not sometime this month for sure.  It will be an hour long. I believe an hour is enough time to get a feel of what the game is like and to see what the story will be about, just like with console or PC demos, an hour is enough time to try the game and decide if you want to buy it or in this case download it. I'm going to try my hardest to have it out by the end of this week.

Here is a gameplay trailer for The Luna Seal. It's not perfect but your get an idea of the story and gameplay until I get the demo uploaded which should be sometime today or tomorrow.

This sounds very ambitious and kind of awesome.

You're mapping is a bit lacking (too spacey I believe). I haven't looked at the video, but the snapshot shows a very large room with a whole lot of nothing. It would probably look better if you condensed it!

I'd take out some of the features that are your personal opinion, mainly because when I do play this, I'll be expecting what you said! Mostly that ones that say "character to care about" and "quests with deep, involving story-lines" - because you're raising the bar, and these are mostly different among each player. :)

The personal quests and relationship system reminds me Dragon Age a little bit - I like it!

Good luck with your project!

Thanks for the feedback. I'm definitely not the best mapper. That is something I definitely need to work on for future projects. Since I'm almost finished I'm going to leave them as is.

This is my first project and I've learned a lot and have been enjoying the game making process, though frustrating at times, I know what I want in a game and I wanted to make sure I created a game that lived up to my expectations. I'm starting to think I put to many features in here but its a learning process. I believe whoever decides to play it will enjoy it.

The Luna Seal Demo is now up
See the first post for the link. With the combined story paths the demo is about 2 hours long. One path is a little over an hour and the other path is a little under an hour. Feedback is very much appreciated. I hope you guys enjoy it. I playtested it a couple of times and everything was running smoothly, no bugs or errors. If you guys do run across a bug or something let me know. Or if your having trouble with the download link please let me know
 Have fun!

I was able to download the demo before you took it down.  I didn't encounter any bugs or anything yet, but I have a few suggestions.

- I died on the second bat.  I don't know if that means the battles are too hard or I just suck.  I'll admit, I'm not very good at turn based RPGs, or maybe I wasn't supposed to be in the cave yet.

- I would take off the autotext thing cause I missed a lot, I'm not a very fast reader.

- Butterflies!  They block my way, I can't go through them lol!

I sorta downloaded this demo because you mentioned you had adult nature stuff, I know that sounds kinda creepy, but I was interested cause I don't see that a lot in RPG maker games.  I originally wasn't going to download because of the hugey mongous a rung gus file size D:!  250 mb is kinda steep if you don't have much custom stuff.  Maybe you should make two download versions, one for peeps who have the RTP and ones that don't.

Don't think I'm hagging on you.  I'm just trying to help you improve and sorry ahead of time if you might have already known most of this.

Look forward to see what you come up with . ;)

Thank you for the feedback it really does help me out. As this is my first game I'm constantly learning and looking for ways to improve.

  • The combat I'm still working on. I've been struggling the most with this. I probably will end up tuning it down some, it might be a little hard just starting off.
  • The autotext I'll see about increasing it so it last longer so you'll have enough time to read the text. I know not everybody reads fast,
  • Lol the butterflies, would it be better if you were able to walk through them. Probably they do get in the way, so I'll probably fix that.
I agree the file size is a little big and I will be uploading both a rtp and nonrtp version. I have a ton of maps in my game, as well as scripts, custom sprites both using in game character generator and those I downloaded. So that might be contributing to the large file size. Compared to other rpg maker games i've downloaded 250 mb isn't that big. I have quite a few I'm playing now that are well over 250 mb but i will look into seeing if i can decrease the file size.

As for the warning about the adult nature it is only a couple of scenes that occur later in the game and it is more talking about adult themes and a scene or two where the characters are 'nude' so to speak, meaning they aren't wearing any armor. I figured it would probably be on the safe side to mention this things so that there aren't any problems later.

Thanks again for the feedback, it has helped  :)

Writing down comments as I play... as I always do:
-Scrolling text right after the intro cutscene went a bit fast.
-My character's biography only says "Mist the"?

-I can walk over my own bed.

-Health fruit has a carrot icon.=s

-I have an item Pancakes in my inventory, but in the description it says "This apple..."

-Why does some text require me to press space while other text doesn't? Kind of lacks consistency. I prefer to space through text boxes myself so I can read stuff at my own pace.

-Huh, a villager randomly disappeared?

-Died from hunger during a cutscene. Stop playing here.

Uhm, yeah. I have some problems. I feel time flows way too fast in your game. The change between day and night happens every few minutes, and my hunger and thirst depletes so fast I can barely explore your game without constantly having to use items to keep myself alive. The quick shifts between day and night feel a bit strange, I can enter a house in the morning, and by the time I've talked to one NPC inside and checked upstairs it's already night time.

Hunger and thirst depleting way too fast really goes against exploring the world because you can't afford being away from a cooking place for too long. Actually, keeping up with thirst isn't so bad because you can get infinite glasses of water from sinks, but hunger is another story. To take care of hunger I need to spend money, which I don't have much of in the beginning of the game, so basically I'm forced to make progress so I can make money to keep myself alive. Another problem is not being able to quickly use multiple foods or drinks at a time. Having to open menu, open items menu, select item and use, and repeat for every single use gets very tedious.

Near the end of my playthrough I entered a somewhat strange cutscene... going from chilling around in my peaceful village into this cutscene with intense music and my characters torturing some guy I didn't know. I dunno... it felt like such a huge shift in atmosphere from out of nowhere.

The relationship system is cool with having some different conversations by examining objects, but one problem I have is that it can sometimes lower the relationship as well, without giving me an option to prevent it other than reloading a save file and not examining it. It would be nice to give me dialogue choices so I can at least have some control over what happens with the conversation (to avoid it from going down). But I know this would be a lot of extra work...

Some other random stuff: Noticed a fair amount of small typos. Mapping was... OK, but nothing spectacular. The town map was a little too large. Could benefit from paths leading to all the houses. Maybe use some fences here and there.

To me it feels like you have a bunch of nice ideas and threw them all into 1 game... and it just doesn't mix very well in my opinion. I haven't even been able to try out the combat since my character died from hunger during that cutscene.

It's amazing what you don't catch during a playthrough but i guess that's why we put out demo but anyway thank you very much for your feedback. This really helps me out. You are correct on one thing, when first developing my game I saw so many things I wanted in my game that I started throwing things in. Now I've been looking into what I don't really need in my game to enhance the gameplay.

I will look into the hunger and thirst system its not something I developed just tweaked and I'm working on getting rid of the auto text. Oh and that intense cutscene your referring to there is a reason I just haven't finished the dialogue for that scene and another one leading up to it. The night and day time event wasn't done by me I got it from the other rpg maker website but I will check out the event or look into finding another one.

My main focus so far has been on the main story so I haven't spent a lot of time on the rest of the game but since I'm almost finished with the main story I'm going to spent some time developing the rest of the game further. This is my first game so I'm still learning but its been fun and thank you for your feedback. This lets me know what areas I need to improve on. I'm still in the earlier to mid stages of development so it won't be a problem to go back and make some changes.

Sounds good, I'll have another look at it some other time after updates. Good luck with your game. :D

Update:

Luna Seal Demo Update will be coming within the next couple of weeks. I've been taking a little break from working on the game. I really needed one. I'm working on it again a little at a time. I'm in school so my main focus this week will be on my schoolwork since I'm getting close to finishing and I'm a little behind on my schoolwork. I will continue to work on the game and get an update out if not this week than next week for sure.

Update:

I know I said I would have a demo update out last week or this week but I sprained my wrist and have been unable to work on my game or anything else for that matter. It's still somewhat difficult to type but hopefully next week I should have a demo update out. I fixed everything I was going to fix and made some changes I just need to do a play through. I haven't playtested it yet. Sorry for the delay and I will try my best to have an update next week.

Update:

Sorry it took so long for the update. Version 1.2 of the demo is now up. Feedback is appreciated.

Not sure if I'm going to do another update after this one as I'm almost finished with the main story. I do still have other areas on the game I need to work on so I might either do one more update or this might be the last update before the release of the game. I'm hoping to have the game finished by the end of the year.

Since this is my first game, it would really help to those who downloaded it to write a small reviewing saying what you like and what needed improvement. As this will help me know what areas I need to improve on for future games.

The demo has been updated. Updated it a few days ago. I will try and find another download source, since not everyone has a 4shared account.

Game Update:

To those who are interested I just wanted to let you know that this game is on hiatus until further notice. Hopefully it won't be too long. Unfortunately I'm having some major issues with my computer that have left me unable to work on my game. Which is unfortunate because I'm close to finishing and was hoping to put it out before this year is up but it doesn't look like that is going to happen. I might make an attempt to work on it but i would hate to do that and lose any progress I have made. I'm hoping in a couple of months I will be able to get a new laptop- I have had this one for over five years- so I can continue to work on my game.

Please if anyone has download it a short review would be appreciate so that I will know what areas I need to work on. It doesn't have to be long. This will really help me out because I hope to be make more games in the future so reviews on what you think of it so far would help. Like I said a short review is fine.
