To my knowledge, at the time aeris' death was a plot that had yet to have been used in games (main characters love interest dies) And it was a big element of FF7 imo.

Right. The more familiar you become with Aeris the better (as far as the storyline is concerned). I would note that Lufia came close to this, even though Lufia did not die. Lufia I and II are bittersweet games...

I have an another one.

In FFVIII, you can get stuck in the last disc if you have not prepared your characters right. What is worse that you can't then even remedy the situation effectively.

Yeah, it's one of my least favorite FF's. Specifically and on topic; your magical resources are linked to items, and said resources also determine your stats. Really? Who thought that was a good idea? It simply means that I can't use my most powerful magic without completely gimping my character. Stupid.

Wanna know how to beat FF8? Why verbally express the first thing two cowboys would exclaim before they blow their heads off. Draw! FF8 to me is the only facile FF game. More facile than FF2. Cause you can get Lionheart at disc 1! And I got it on disc 1, and the whole game cause I drew things I needed, and did a quite glass cannon/low level run I was able to beat Ultimecia in no time. The only FF I did a low lvl run of, and my last I can never do it again with another game.

The game also discouraged leveling using that same system in conjuction with enemies getting stronger as you level. I think I beat the game somewhere around level 14. Not to mention the fact that you got paid a salary based on the grade you received in school. Which you kept getting paid after the school dissolves.

yeah the leveling system was atrocious. I hate when games have enemies level with your party. It takes almost all the satisfaction out of grinding. Seriously it's a huge gaping flaw and to this day FFVIII is the only FF I didn't beat and didn't like.

I don't mind it if weak enemies remain weak (and vice versa). Their stats don't have to scale linearly.

I really disliked FFVIII because I thought it was a joke. Bosses are easy as hell.

If Aeris were some straggler type companion the emotional attachment to her may have been less and, as a result, her death may not have been as palpable. I *always* use Aeris in my main party, knowing that she will die. Why? Because it makes the story better. You become attached to the characters that you use more often, the characters that appear in every battle and in mini-conversations. I think her death was one of the best plot devices ever to appear in an RPG.
It is a powerful plot device but at the same time it can make it feel like a really severe blow to the player. I hate having to give up characters I frequently use and losing any progress I put into them, especially if they're a character I like. I tend pick my most favorite characters and focus most of my effort into them. I played FF7 before I had internet so I was never spoiled of what happened to Aeris and it made me really angry at the time since I devoted so much time into using her and got so attached.

At the very least, allow the character's development to continue on somehow, such as like Krile (Cara) inheriting all of Galuf's abilities in FF5, or being able to strip down past or deceased characters in SaGa games.

Since we're on the topic of Final fantasys :p (lol jk) Leveling your characters like hell for hours on end only for them to become useless around end game.

Im referencing FFtactics(Great Game) but I spent a long time class leveling regular characters only to replace them at the end with characters like beowolf, meliadoul

and TGcid (who by the way makes the game a cakewalk once you get him to join.)

I'm sure a lot of people feel the same way, but in the end doesn't that just make u want to kick sephiroths ass even more?

I completely understand this concept, but i feel (just my opinion) it had to be done, and added an extreme element to the game.....

as for transfering her powers, that I agree they should have let you do, at least with the materia, but at the same time it could probably cause a character to become OP.

No, not really. I was more angry at the developers than the villain.

Whilst you find it annoying Kilim highlighted something quite inspired.

Take something that annoys or is something out of the ordinary and then turn it to

your advantage.

There is just the one problem (or more like several) with the plot devices like Aeris. If the player likes Tifa more and some strange reason not realize Aeris' overall importance to plot until just before she gets killed, the player might be just disappointed to lose his/her "super easy mode" character. Let's face it, Aeris is intentionally made to be one of the best party members when it comes to helping in the combat during the boss battles. It all helps to make character more likable.

Aeris was annoying and even painful - but it was meant to be.

FFVIII (which I've never finished, though do want to) - hmm... do I use my characters puny attack or do I summon an esper that will smack the bejeebus out of everyone?

Seriously, if I had been able to swap <attack> out for ANYTHING else, I think I would have done that with every character.

I find annoying plot points that require you to follow a specific hint that's only given once, or possibly not at all. I'm remembering FFIV (a great game). But when you leave the underworld (whatever they called it) Cid yells up to you to check with his guys. One playthough I forgot or missed that or something. I went all over the freaking world talking to everybody I could think of to try to get the plot to advance.

Another thing I find annoying is forcing the player to change playstyle midway through the game. Case in point - Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. I love the game, especially modded, but it really suffers from this (in no small part because Activision rushed it out the door). In the beginning you can fight unarmed, melee, or use guns. Or you can be a "social" vampire and talk and mind-control your way through most of the quests. Then comes Chinatown - from that point on the game basically switches to a FPS. Guns are better than everything else, there are no more "social" options (there's hardly any more dialogue at all, honestly). So a player that was spending his XP for a certain style ends up gimped beyond belief at the drop of a hat, with absolutely no way to correct it other than cheat codes or restarting the game.

Gonna have to disagree. I like the concept, and I especially thought the "Banon sequence" in FF6 was well done. The developers gave Banon enough HP to withstand more than a couple hits while also giving him a costless Cura type spell to keep your party refreshed. Having to keep Banon alive added some intensity to the already exciting raft trip, and makes you evaluate your battle plan rather than just spamming through combat mindlessly.

Kudos, FF6.

Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
