And here's another thing-people who just absolutely will not take personal responsibility. Straight upsets me, man.
Take one of the guys in the recovery program I work at. Dude had to complete our 90 day program as part of parole, right?
Well, we've a rule-no smoking (stupid rule), PERIOD. Not just on premises, but PERIOD. Staffers (like me) can smoke at HOME, but the residents (mostly homeless/fresh out of jail/junkies) are not allowed to smoke at all. ANYWAY...
We've got that rule, he's got his 90 he's got to do. At 30 days, we give a piss test to check for opiates, THC, and nicotine (as well as a few others, but those are the biggies).
Could have the test at 30 days, could have it at 35, point is, after day 30, at ANY given time, random drug tests, yeah?
Remember, he's got the 90 for PAROLE, right?
So on day 32 he's there, he not only breaks curfew (a big, BIG no no), but breaks curfew, sneaks out the back door (breaking the lock), chain smokes half a pack, and then comes back in as if nothing happened.
Whole thing caught on camera.
WHY?
Grown man. SUPPOSEDLY trying to get back on his feet. Sorry, but part of that is following the rules, no matter how batsh*t insane they are, ya know?
They get three hots and a cot, have no bills, get clothes (second hand, but EXCELLENT quality), and even get some spending money.
The basic rules are, no drugs, no drinking, no smoking, follow curfew, and do the job assigned you.
Ya know, kind of like working an actual job?
I guess it's the fact they don't seem to WANT to change, ya know?
Ride the wagon as long as you can, bounce between the different homeless shelters (which we are not-we are a not-for-profit recovery work rehab type program-and we even offer a full-blown detox program out in the countryside), stay on the smack, and in general, destroy their lives.
But the point of this rant (and the background above) was to get to what I'm *****ing about:
Yesterday, one of my riders (I should point out my actual job, in addition to counseling the residents, is picking up donations from people all over the county-I'm a box truck driver, and as such, I have two riders-both members in the program "Trying" to get back on their feet) hollers at me that we need to turn the truck around, cause he saw some money on the side of the road. Sure enough, $20 bill, just on the side of the damn road.
We split it three ways (had it been a tip from a customer, it would have been two ways-$10 for one rider, $10 for the other), $7, $7, and I took the $6.
They were stoked, praising their chosen deities, talking about how that money was going to really make their week better, and one of 'em (the smarter of the two) was even talking about getting his girl some flowers.
Come to find out today, they got checked out last night for showing up after curfew blind-staggering-falling-down-drunk-off-their-asses-SLOSHED.
They had $14 between the two of them, and they got blackout levels of drunk.
Now, in addition to trying to figure out how that's even POSSIBLE, it pisses me off that they didn't even make it 30 days.
Look, don't get me wrong-I know that quitting those kinds of vices are hard. I've been illicit drug free for over 8 years-I very nearly lapsed a few weeks ago on some pain killers, but that's a whole nother ball of wax-I've BEEN there.
I still drink occasionally. VERY rare. And when I do, it's not LIKE THAT.
Either you're legit trying to get your life together, or you are wasting my time. We've got a total of 90 beds. There are people out there that WANT to get back on their feet, they WANT to change their lives.
If you're just looking for a place to crash until you can get your next fix, get the HELL OUT.
Sorry, I'm just irritated.
