Thank you, Candacis. I tried the highlight, and I see the improvement (though I had to go and check for lines again...)

But I think I have the highlight too bright on the dark tiles and too dull on the bright tiles.

(if I am spamming up the topic, let me know.)

I'm with you Granny.  Background tiles can't stand out too much, they interfere with sprites if they do.

I'm working in a portrait generator for some time now but there are several details I'm not happy with, principally the hair - it have to be simple so different parts can fit well together, but I think I can still make it prettier, just don't know exactly how. I have some 'artistic limitations' but I'd love some tips here.

The transition from skin to hair is too abrupt.  A little soft shading on the hair border would help.

There are no highlights, so the hair looks quite flat.

Different aspect - that heavy black line under the left side of the jaw (as we look at it) is quite ugly.

If you want to make it 'prettier' you have to make the strands of hair end in a sharp point, not like yours which are very rounded.

Here's some examples, as you can see there are a lot of strands of hairs and they are very whimsical and end in a sharp point.

@ksjp: I'm not using any highlights either, and there's no shadow between skin and hair, yet it still looks ok! It just matters how it's drawn :)

Thank you guys, I'll work a little more in the sharp ends but I think that's the way to go =)

It was in my plans actually, but I totally forgot about the shadow between skin and hair. That's the problem of leaving things for later =P I kinda liked the heavy line haha, but it probably looks better without it.

I like the style and how she looks! (And I also liked the heavy line :D   )

The hair probably still needs a brigher color as highlight here and there. But it is already improved.

Moar Gothic tiles!

Still not completely happy with the top part of the windows. Might need more glass there.

With old tiles for comparison purposes, and of course, how they should be used together.
the repeatable part is 3 tiles wide.

EDIT: I fixed some little mistake, should be better now. Still no windows, for that matter.

@Omega Weapon

You don't mind if I showcase some similar tiles in the near future right? :p

No. I just like working on tiles for no reason :p

If they're at least half as beautiful as mine, go ahead!

@omega I love that design :)   I'd go in and add some highlights, as is it looks a little flat but with a little highlight it would be incredible

Why are you not completely happy with those windows?????

The only thing I can imagine improving them is maybe ??? not appropriate from a stylistic perspective, but it might set off the window a bit if it had a border around the edge. (just a shade of grey)

I love the shape! Glass is fine.

Had time today so went and worked on the side sprite.

Will be working on a template to make things easier.

Finished with the boots, idle sprites done!

@Granny:

It just feels to flat, and not enough glass for proper gothic architecture (I'm an architecture/art history nut, go figure)

I just can't seem to manage the nicely done frames on this scale.

A shot from the actual cathedral I used for inspiration. Here you can get a good look on what I mean.

Also, kudos if you recognize which cathedral it is :p

I already left out a lot of details for the sake of me not pulling my hair out.
gonna rework them a bit, try again.

In case you were wondering, I used a diagram for drawing out the tiles before coloring. There are plenty on the webz.

EDIT:

Yay, better windows

@Omega Really loving how those windows are coming along.  Stain glass and cathedral style decor are something that don't make it into people's games due to the boxy nature of some tiles.  Did you work with a template for the arch and then use it for the pillars and windows?

I am attempting to make some kobolds in TF style.  So far working with the pallet provided has been unsuccessful.  I am gonna come back to this one later after I have a chance to look through the colors again on the blog and the characters in the set.  I may take down the height of the head a few pixels and make the cheeks puffier so it doesn't look as rounded.

EDIT:
I think I have a better handle on the pallet now and I've got the contour of the head I want.

EDIT:
That should be a tad better.  I'll animate him another time.  TF is deceptively hard.

@Pally:

I worked off a diagram of the arches and windows of the cathedral in Amiens for the most part, if that is what you mean.

@KanaX:

I didn't check with a palette viewer, but it looks like yours is different from the RTP one, making these icons less easily usable if you intend to share them later.

But they do look good! All this makes me hungry now :popcorn:

It is true they are brighter. I have to admit I like the look though! Lattice pies! Yum!

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
Can someone recommend some fun story-heavy RPGs to me? Coming up with good gameplay is a nightmare! I was thinking of making some gameplay platforming-based, but that doesn't work well in RPG form*. I also was thinking of removing battles, but that would be too much like OneShot. I don't even know how to make good puzzles!
one bad plugin combo later and one of my followers is moonwalking off the screen on his own... I didn't even more yet on the new map lol.
time for a new avatar :)
