@Akashic Soldier  I like the idea of turtle people, but I think it could use a bit more work.  The front-facing version has a very flat top of the head, so rounding it more would make it look less square.  Your arms are also uneven and unless there's a story reason for that I think fixing them so they match would be a lot more appealing.  The side-view's face seems squished to me, and extending it out a bit could help give a more turtle beak appearance.  It depends on the turtle you're basing the appearance on, but when I think turtles I think round shells, so a rounder shell may look good.  There are a few spots where I'm confused about the shading, mostly the highlights on the back of the head and on the beak's tip.  I don't think light would be hitting there, so replacing those light colors with darker ones would work better.  Take some more time to fix up those things, and I think this'll be a cool creature.  :)

I made a few edits to show what I mean.  Also tried out my own version of the scaled one, since it seemed interesting.

What do you think of the animation?

The rest of the map is irrelevant.

@KanaX Looks good but the animation should be a step faster, it's too slow.

You either have TOO many frames that barely change in the animation movement or the speed to is slow.

@Rukiri I'm not exactly sure how to deal with that. It's the classic stepping animation of MV. Perhaps the gif slows it down.

So you're using about 3 frames then?  What speed are you using in game?

Working on a journal style menu.

This is a sample profile image, I want a "teenager on adventure"-feeling, A is the first version, B the current one.

Does anyone have any feedback or ideas how to make it better?

Version A

Version B

I'd go with Version B. The tab ribbons set up for some nice utility in the menu. Though maybe you could offset them so that they look like they're coming out of the book itself rather than floating next to it. It looks really nice by the way, I like your style! :)

@Iliketea: I prefer B style, though it's too packed with drawings and it's kinda confusing.

@kanax: The water is too slow... I don't see a current of water, the water moves weirdly (if that's a word), maybe if you speed it up it will look smother!

@noctiluca: I love your graphics... the mountain "walls" (i don't know how to call it) are just amazing.

Guys, what do you think of these grass tiles? Which color is the best? Or should I delete this grass tile and try another one?

(Don't pay attention to the character, he's a filler)

Thanks!

@c0sa Those tiles look good, at don't have any obvious repeated patterns. But I would keep all three grass tiles, and use them in different areas! You could keep the top left for lush jungle areas, the bottom left for farms or towns, and the right for most general areas.

@Iliketea The journal looks good, if a bit busy... but I think that adds to the character of it. It's certainly a unique menu, which is always good!

As for critique, I would adjust the tabs on the side a bit, they don't look quite like they're sticking out of the pages, and instead tacked on top. At least, the lighter-colored ones do, which I think is due to the outline. If you removed the outline just where the color and pages meet, it would look more like they were sticking out. Additionally, I would add some texture onto the note, as it stands out in a bad way comparatively. Also, it looks like the acorn is going under the picture in version B, while it looks normal in A; is that just me seeing that? Last note, is to maybe look at putting more spacing between lines of text, decreasing the font size if needed. It's a bit hard on the eyes to read when it's very cramped. I hope I'm not being too negative about things, it really does look awesome!

@c0sa  The right color depends on everything else.  That's why I like to start with a mockup and then make tiles, not the other way around.  That way everything goes together and has some consistency.  I think the colors within each type of grass are too samey though, a little variation in the ramp would add some life to it.

Wanted to play around a little with spriting my own characters and wanted to ask for some feedback.

Just gonna mention that the colors are not final.

Cute.  The mask is too close to the skin tone, I didn't know what it was until I zoomed in.  Hair's looking a bit pillow shaded.  Overall a good sprite, I would like to see more.

Thank you! Must be my face shading being awkward cause my intention weren't a mask, will play around with it.

What... exactly does pillow shaded mean?

pillow shading is when you just shade an outline of an object, rather than curving & contouring how the shadows should look on the 3d image.

(I have trouble with it a lot)

here's a quick tutorial that I just barely found on the subject:

@terrorchan: I prefer A, but it's a close match with C. What made me choose A was that the grass tile there doesn't show its repeating motif. C feels like a "grid" of grass where A is more organic, in my opinion.

B won't work because of the way you're drawing the trees. One of them is too complex/simple compared to the other.

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
