Hey guys, brand new here. I've been in the map painting phase of my game for a several weeks now and I think I finally have a style down that I love. I'm going for the bright, cutesy, rounded look :LZSblush:
I have very few actual assets, as I kind of prefer to just paint an entire scene in aseprite and them parallax it into rpg. I know this takes longer, but I think it'll make every scene more unique and full of life. Plus I just love adding clutter, and you can't do that with a grid!

I've got a few maps to share that are mostly done except for lighting and shadow effects and minus items that will be events.

the first map needs some editing but I wanted to include it:

And this is what I'm working on today:

Oh wow, this is really excellent. If I had to describe it, the first word that comes to mind is 'bouncy'. Looks like you've hit the nail on the head, so to speak.

Thank you so much! I'm learning with each map I do and it's really nice.

@Fruitversity - those look brilliant, love your colours choices by the way, it makes the food stand out and is a very good representation of the real thing.

I've begun to make my own resources for my first game, because I want mine to look unique. I am quite inspired by art in retro video games, especially the amiga era games I grew up with. In any case, this is my first attempt at a bigger piece of pixel art, I wanted to draw a monster I could use, I haven't made the sprite yet, but that should be easy compared to this:

Cycloptic Sludge.png
Basically, I want peoples opinions, both on the monster concept, and the art style itself (both good and bad, like, if it sucks I'd rather know and why). I did the shading and highlights using dithering. I've called it a cycloptic sludge, which is going to live in swampy areas and damp caves and I'm inventing an attack for it called poisoned fang which does 100 damage and leaves the player poisoned. I've always thought cyclops creatures make enemies which look generally pretty good. I was also sort of influenced by grimer and muk from pokemon when I drew this, which is possibly why I am drawn to it being a poison type enemy.

Update: I have now done and incuded the matching sprite sheet. I've tested the sprite, it works :)Cycloptic sludge.png

It's not great, but its somehow flowing... Its good enough for starts, I guess...
But no matter how many times I try... the side walking and running doesnt look good, mostly the legs... Does anyone have any tips or a model I could follow along?

I hope anyone can give some help... I also don't mind if anyone have tips to improved the ones in here...

Thanks in advance...

Thank you! I'm working hard on colors and learning fun new ways to shade things, so it means a lot. Also, this is adorable! I absolutely love that cyclops and you did a great job!!

@Fruitiversity loving the style. Very crisp and clean. Good choice of colorpallete aswell. The lack of shadows/shading actually works very well for this style.

@Helen1701 looks good. Only bit of criticism I have is where the 'arms' connect to the body looks a little 'flat' . Other then that good job tho

Thanks for the feedback guys. I must admit I struggle a bit with the shading, like, knowing where the shadows and highlights should be so it doesn't look totally wrong. Took me a good couple of hours to get it looking as good as it now does, I might tweek it a bit though to improve it. Glad you like the design though :) I've always loved cyclops monsters as an idea. I might make most of my monsters different shades of purple, so the player will automatically know it is a monster when they see it. I'm going to set some of them to approach the player and some of them walking around at random. I don't need to make too many different monsters, about twenty or so should be enough for my purposes, excluding bosses.

I've just made my first parallax background. I'll be doing quite a few of these, and the sand is copied and pasted texture from a tileset I have created. I did it that way because I thought it would probably look a bit better if the sand was consistent. The water is also inkeeping my animated tileset, same shade, shimmers done the same way. It was my first attempt at clouds though, so I kept those simple, going for a simple 20% and 30% opacity white on the sky blue background.

Update: I need to raise the level of the sand in order to get this to work how I want it. On another note, I have included my first set of eight custom sprites. I am going to be making a lot of these, so I made male and female templates to work from, because it speeds up the work. I am also going to be doing some child sprites and babies, to make it a bit more true to real life. For children I probably want the height to be around 16 pixels, and for babies just make them crawling along the floor as they do in real life. I need to make minimum four sets of men, four sets of women, two sets of children and one set of babies. That is even excluding the animals I want to do, one set for farm, one set for wild, and one set for pets.

Hello! I am known as Cookie. I am new here. I recently purchased RPG Maker MV and wanted to start making my own assets to perhaps share in the future. I was a graphic designer for over a decade but I am sick now so I suppose I'm retired. I'm old enough that I got the first yellow Gameboy Color when Pokémon Blue and Red came out..

I have been fiddling with making character sprites and this is my first time animating since I was a teenager so forgive me errors... just hoping for feedback or interest in my work. I'm really happy to talk to anyone with advice! For example, I have no idea if I have even created anything useful to examine here:

rpgcookie1.gif

I can create more examples as I literally sleep and do nothing all day now. I am eager to create! :)
Thanks! And apologies if this is the wrong place for my post!

@RPGCookie Overall super cute style. My issue with it is the way the arm/legs on each side move.

When someone is walking, arms and legs tend to move in opposite pairs. So, if I take a step forward with my right foot, me left arm will move forward. It looks like you have it so that the right foot/right arm are going back at the same time. If you look at the frames of the default sprites carefully you can see this.

Ahah! See? Comes from being so rusty! Thank you so much for noticing! :)

@RPGCookie

As a walking animation, I parrot mlogan's suggestion and I also suggest giving the arms a frame where they pass slightly in front of the body to really emphasize the arms swinging around the body.

Very cute, though. I like the style!

I have a couple of screenshots to show, so you get an idea of what sort of art style I am going for in my game. These aren't actual maps I intend to use, they're basically test maps to make sure my tilesets are working as they should.

So, what do you think? This is all my own original artwork I've been working hard on these last few weeks.

@Helen1701, I kinda like yo style, honey! Not sure what kinda game you going for, but I can totally see these tiles in an everyday horror game, or some kinda absurd adventure. :kaoluv: What program did you use to make 'em?

Hey guys, I made my very first tileset for my own game and while I am somewhat satisfied with it I could use another pair of eyes on it in case I've forgotten/overlooked a thing or two. Since my game has a darker theme I wanted something to match that and this is what came of it. Any and all feedback is welcome.

FYI:
The ground tiles, building and most of the rope that is hanging from the walls is just edited rtp tilesets. Only the smaller portion of it that is connected to their necks is made by me.

Has it really been 50 streams? At this point it's just guilting me into pushing out a prototype. :kaoswt:

I should probably just bite the bullet and send it out, then go with my original plan to provide weekly updates.
I know it's just other small RM devs, but it still always feels legitimizing to have folks email me in private with a steam key, requesting a review of their game.:kaoluv: Look ma, I've made it to the big leagues.
time and time again I enjoy dramatic remarks on how I should find a better job.
As it stands, I go to work for 10-14 days a month. At work, I have time for my private projects. I arrive home, my mind is clear.

Came back cuz of the sale. Got MZ. The System 2 advanced settings for UI are so frustrating, and I see we still hate pixel fonts. Marvelous.
Did another YouTube short. This one has like 1k views (or maybe 380? Analytics is being weird). Getting them zoomer views, yo!
