These are some generic character busts I've been working on:

The differences should stand out more once the highlights and shadows are added.

I'm now trying to make an actual body for the head,

Is the color transition fine?

May be using this little guy in my game. I know he needs shading work on his clothes so could someone point me in the right direction? I'm pretty stumped x.x

Pretty proud of myself since it's the first time I've ever attempted making hair and clothes from scratch, and it came out okay-ish XD

No no no! No dithering at that size of pixel art, it just add noise and makes the form incomprehensible! Randommerade, I think your colors are all too saturated, it's making it hard to tell the difference between shades. The lighter things get the less saturated they tend to look. Keep your light source in mind define the shapes of the shadows and highlights before you worry about things like the spikes in his hair or defining a waistline.

Thanks for the advice! :)

@ Randommerade: Always happy to help people get better at pixel art. :)

@ Neverward: Sorry, I thought you were talking to Randommerade. Dithering is okay for something that size. People just use it as a crutch so often that it's a bit of a pet peeve of mine.

@ Engr. Adiktuzmiko: You should try to define the shape of the object with the shadows before moving on to worrying about how the colors blend. If the shadows are the right shape and in the right place it actually doesn't matter all that much how drastic the change is.

Working on a much more complicated behavior for a scene involving two sprites conjoined.  This is the current template.  I'll have the middle and right show more movement once I edit the hands/head appropriately.

@Palladinthug:

I've been through this process to make my characters kiss each other.

With all the edits I had to do for each animation step, let's just say that Layers are your friends :)

How are the proportions on this character here? I want to make sure nothing is off.

@Chaos

To my eye the left arm is too short, especially the upper arm. Can't really see the right arm to judge that one.

@Chaos: Proportions are nearly perfect if you want her to be a midget. You're getting a lot better at keeping things consistent! If you want her to have typical female proportions from under her chin to the bottom of her crotch should be 3 heads tall. Push it further than that and it will still look good, it'll just look like superhero, supermodel or anime proportions. You should be able to stretch it and fix from there instead of having to redraw.

Hi! i'm working on this request at the moment, would like some feedback on it :) It's an edit of actor 1-3. I haven't done the clothes yet... are the blue shades fine? I honestly can't figure them out completely.

They look good! but you can emphasize the differences even more I think :) for instance, it's sort of hard to see that the toned female is toned... even though girls generally get smaller muscles than men, they do bulge a bit too. I look forward to seeing them shaded :)

Ahhh, the whole torso midget thing again... how much would I have to stretch this?

Hmm. This one is a bit more complicated. Shoulders for men are usually 3 heads wide total so either your head is too small or your shoulders are too wide. Guys are also about 3 heads high in the torso but the spacing of things within that area is different. Belly buttons are higher on men and the space between the bellybutton and bottom of the crotch is one head. Um, this stuff changes a bit if the man is actually naked but I'm assuming you're putting clothes on the man at some point so things are going to be a little more restrained. I really suggest looking up as many reference images as you can instead of just listening to me spout proportion guidelines since you've got the shape of the hips wrong and it's not something I can explain very well (especially since I have troubles with hips on guys myself).

Thank you for the feedback Dreamer! ^_^

I've made several alterations to the line-art since my last post, particularly to the toned female body, and I've also started on the heads.

Though I haven't colored beyond the base color yet, I'm hoping to make several more face alterations before I do.

Question: does anyone think I should draw in the left arm?

My original intention was to have it hidden behind the body, and only emphasize the sleeve on the outfits where it would show, but I'm not sure if I should go that route.

Here is the current wip for the bases:

And some of the alternate faces that I've been working on:

Is this a gay couple or something?

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
