In each of my 3 projects you could say my healers are hybrids, or technically "Medics", not necessarily traditional healers with a church-like affinity. Plus from their personalities, one wouldn't suspect them of being a healer, or may even question why they're a healer.
In one project (Ruby Chronicles) the healer is the main character's best friend who can hit for decent damage in battle (Sword and Boomerang), plus quite fast and his reasons behind wanting to heal were because his sister was caught in an accident that is almost his fault and he wants to raise money to pay for her operation, when the cast get spirited away to Dubious those feelings manifest into his healing abilities.
In my other project the healer was an ex-soldier doctor in the army, so he was the second strongest physical character, had good healing but he's old so his HP and agility stats are rather low. His weapon of choice is a Claymore/ Broadswords with rather interesting names...
In this project I had 4 Medic roles. One of which could be argued the main character (13 playable members), Logan was born with healing abilities, but are just restricted to healing wounds and status ailments, on the other side he is battle orientated/ a battle-holic so he's the strongest Medic and wields a spear. The next one; Felisha is geared towards pre-protection; i.e. Making allies immune to status effects and removing debuffs as well as general healing, she also has a range of priority attacks since she wields a rapier. The third Medic; Kayle is the fastest of the four and is a status-inducer/ item-mixer so kind of a thief/alchemist mix (minus draining abilities) plus she can also deal MP damaging attacks and wields a dagger. The last one Silica is the healing and buffer (only defense and magic defense buffs) of the team and also casts regenerative skills as well. Her weapon is a shield (purely defense based, her strength stat is poor) and she covers for weakened allies so I guess she's a Paladin in the most basic sense.
