Hello there,

at the german forums, we had a contest in august and september about making a game with some set rules.
I present the winner of this contest.

- only RTP (with the exception of the title screen)
- plugins allowed
- the default hero of the appropriate maker must be used
- we had 8 weeks for this project

This is the original contest and this is the winner's choice

I thought it would be fun to create a game just with the RTP. As I own most of the rpg makers, I can merge the different RPTs (at least the music, as most of the graphics are too individual).
So I created The Treasure of the Moonlight Lake.
As we didn't have much time for the contest, I wasn't able to provide an english translation. But now it's done!
You can download it on itch.

I would be really happy if you try it out and tell me what changes you'd like to see.
As I am not a native english speaker, please tell me if the translation isn't good! I'd love to improve!

This game is full of story elements and background story hidden in books.

For a full playthrough you'll need approx 4 hours.

Once upon a time, a magical sea cucumber with a fantastic hat fell into the world. Oh no, that was the other game.

Okay, let's start over.

200 years ago, a meteorite fell on the world and triggered the gift of magic in some people. Humanity split into three fractions. There was a battle over the meteor, from which the church emerged victorious and from then on imposed several rules on people how to use magic.

Today only the books tell about this long forgotten time. People have long since become accustomed to the control of the Church. Magic is no longer used.

Until young Harold finally finds an old treasure map and sets off on an adventure with his best friend Marsha. However, the mysterious treasure of the Moonlight Lake can not be found without some obstacles and puzzles. But what does it all have to do with the impact of the meteorite? Harold and Marsha eventually come across information that sheds new light on long-ago events.

Much of the background story can be found in the game in the books. To fully understand the story, you should not miss this!

Harold and Marsha
Two friends who grew up together in the peaceful village of Trisca.
Harold is a bit simple-minded and naive.
Marsha comes from a family that received the magical gift when the meteor struck.
But since the church of the traditionalists is in charge, magic was forbidden and only very few people are allowed to practice magic, and only on the instruction of the church.

- a very deep background story; the game has its own world and a story of how it all came about
- tactically relatively demanding fights, turn-based
- every fight is evented, there are no random fights
- a few puzzles want to be solved
- an order book (Questlog)
- one or two mini-games
- a few funny allusions and some humor in some places
- two different endings
- five different weapons: choose the weapon that best suits your playing style
- one or two secrets

Patch 1.2 is live!

Features
Added difficulty level. Easy: Enemies have half their normal stats. Hard: Enemies have double their normal stats.
Added entry for the patch notes in the title menu.

Gameplay
Books can now be collected and read later. There is a new "Book Collection" entry in the main menu for this purpose.
If a character is revived in battle, he/she is invulnerable for 1 round.

Graphics
Mirror images added in the lake scene.
Teleport room slightly enlarged.
Graphics of R.K. II exchanged.
When you meet R.K. for the first time. II, the camera now zooms in closer in the sequence.
Animation changed when the professor breaks off a piece of crystal shard.
Animation changed when Harold hits the dagger.
Added Grandros plugin for rich smoothing.

Bug fixes
Noise in music removed.
Translation slightly improved.
In the cave behind the waterfall, Marsha can now be approached from below when playing with controller.
Text error corrected in the dead end; a line break was missing in the German version.
Harold no longer thinks the fan in the research room is a "strange machine", but recognizes it as a fan.

Other adjustments
When you leave the mission overview, you end up in the menu again.
When searching Grandpa's dresser, a picture of the box is now displayed. The same picture is also shown in the scrolls at the end, so that it is clear what the found code belongs to.
End sequence (the bad ending) slightly adjusted.

I could use some players for testing, first, because I am no native english speaker and would love to improve the translation. And second, because I don't know if the new hard difficulty is manageable.

So if anyone plays it and tells me about the improvements, I would be happy to hear :)

Features
Achievements! A total of 25 achievements can now be unlocked.
New maps have been added (alchemy lab, storage room, study).
Two new puzzles/mini-games added.
New items added.
New quests added (finally more side quests! :D).

Gameplay
Added autosave after the robot fight.
Added a visual clue to the pipe puzzle for wrong and right parts.
Added the second part of the pipe puzzle.
R.K. II can now perform maintenance in combat to heal itself to 100%.
There are now new ways to get the armor and items from the three cabinets in the research room.

Graphics
Added lighting effects with Khas Lighting plugin.
In addition to this, made the night and cave areas darker and gave the player a torch.
Also added shadows with Exhydras plugin.
Grandros plugin for rich smoothing removed due to problems with unclean edges.

Bugfixes
The "Book Collection" and "Help" entries are no longer attached to the same command.
The book collection remembers the last book you opened, so you don't have to scroll down again all the time.

Other adjustments
Made it clearer that healing has no effect on a machine and that machine oil is available for it.

Version 1.4 is here!

The most important changes:

The difficulty level can be changed in the middle of the game and is displayed in the save state. Also, the difficulty level "hard" was found to be too hard and therefore adjusted a bit. But don't worry, it's still super hard :D

Features
The selected difficulty level is now displayed in the save state.
The difficulty level can now be changed in the middle of the game.

Graphics
Removed the inappropriate side doors.
Moved the fireplace so it can no longer burn the whole carpet.
You can no longer walk over chairs.
Added a graphic hint to the table where you can use the machine in the alchemy lab.

Balancing
The stats of the enemies on the hard difficulty level slightly reduced.

Bugfixes
In Trisca: Marsha's movement route and the water bucket adjusted so that the player can no longer be locked up.
You can't walk on Marsha's house roof anymore.
The menu can no longer be opened during the mole mini-game.
The door to the treasure chamber no longer opens until both people are standing on the switches.
Corrected two spelling errors in the German version.
Translation Geld/money unified.
Fixed a few translation errors in the English version.

Other adjustments
Adjusted the comment Harold makes about the box in the junk room.
The bedside cabinet in the parents' bedroom can now no longer be clicked from the table.
The butterflies now move a little faster.
Harold now heroically jumps into the hole in the entrance hall instead of just running in.
The cheat that was in the game for testing purposes has been made inaccessible.

If nobody finds any mistakes or has any suggestions for improvement (I dare you! :LZSevil:), I'll turn back to my colonists in RimWorld and then to my sea cucumber.

dunno, will play, and figure out, it was german, so i need to set it to english,
to understand any of it, but also busy, will see if I can play around.

It's fully translated into english, but I guess it's not perfect because I'm no native speaker xD

it as well, because it's harder than it is for me as well :)

Don't worry because of grammar, I mostly mean logic, translation errors and such. Just tell me everything you think should be improved ^^

so far I played is nice, no idea how you did the book collection.
but dont know if you need to collect or read the book for the achievement.

but the game also suddenly crash out of teh sudden (4x in a row) when I enter
a battle in the crystal cave (completely close it).

not sure what's downstairs from the lab. but nicely done.
not to difficult, but there puzzles are nice too (however you did it)
the stone for the hidden lab was nicely done, was a bit of think work,
but I got through, so good job on it :)

as for the pipe game to replace or place the bits in it's position is nice
too, but have a tiny issue.

you have 7 pieces I think, and 6 can be placed.

However, even if those are reconizeable where to place, it doesn't
exit the scene when it's compleet and 1 piece left.

I would recommand to exit the scene once compleeted instead of
pressing "cancel" to leave the scene.

I do some more digging, but it looks really good so far.

SIDENOTE:
the swift's life game (exe) doesn't seem to work for me)
possible way to get the .rar with the files like this game?
so I can play later on my pc directly?

The book collection is based on Yanflys Common Event Menu Plugin, with a small edit by Mr. Fu (select the last activated menucommand instead of the first).
What do you need to get the achievement "bookworm" is said in the description of this achievement: "Found and read all 47 books and notes available" so it should be clear you have to read them.

This is wierd. I don't know what could cause this. There is no error, just closing the game? Maybe you could send me a savegame or small video?

With the pipe game and the need to press cancel, you're right. I'm just not sure how to do this, but I will have a look.
The spare part which isn't needed for the puzzle is just for fun xD

Oh, yes! Of course you're right. I did this one with an installer and deleted the rar archive. Of course there are pcs which don't like exe, so thank you for mentioning this. I uploaded the archive right away, you can download it now.

@Zion I beat the game (still missing books), but there is something I dont get.
I keep getting "Bad Ending" as well the autosave ones the scene starts (this should be here),
but 2 tiles BEFORE the cutscene!

I also got a locked, but it seems, I cannot go back to town to find "Grampa's Locker",
so I missing something, somewhere, and I think, whatever is in the locked chest is
something I need to save Marsha unless you can get this locker in the new game?

I got the code for it, but idk if you can save her without being tracked back?

I appreciate your thoughts and ideas on this, but since this puzzle is bigger than it seems (I needed 2 whole days to implement the first one), I won't add any new feature to it.
But I will hava a look if you can complete it without pressing cancel.

Yep. You need to start a new game and take the item out of grandpa's locker before you head off to the moonlight lake. You can skip the fights if you want to (there will be a choice once you have the item). The code you got at the bad ending is carried over to all saves (as long as you don't manually delete). I know it's not the best choice I made here, still learning for future games.

the first time I did it, it has a different start, every retry a new game,
it started very differently.

but I wont let them skip the battles (at least not the lab robot one).
I didn't got the books, but the story went differently than I thought.

but realy nicely done.

I uploaded a small mini update.

Some books were shown with green title, some without. This has led to the confusion that some books are more important than others. Since this is not the case, I have removed all color. All book titles are now displayed in normal white font color.

I put a little more time (60 frames) before the two QTE. So it should (hopefully) no longer be possible that a previous key input is accidentally counted as a wrong input.

Until now, you still had to press the escape button in the pipe puzzle when you had solved it successfully. Now the game recognizes on its own when the puzzle has been solved.

Version 1.5 "Dark Update":

(Graphic) Mirror images at the moonlight lake are now really mirrored.
(Graphic) Made the caves at the end of the game darker and the glow of the crystals brighter.
(Graphics) In the crystal cave, the collectible mushrooms and the switches now glow dimly to make them easier to see.

(German) Two spelling mistakes corrected.

(Internal) Added links to the licenses of freesound.


So this is the last update if no more bugs are reported to me :smile:

Well, someone "reviewed" my game. Didn't credit me anywhere in the video and spent 2 minutes insulting it. Going to ignore that and move on.
To cut down on map lag, I've been researching how to implement a lighting layer as a single map overlay instead of a bunch of individual lights. Hopefully I'll have a screenshot soon!
Imagine having a game broken up into a whole bunch of chapters? Like Chapter 11 should be about the party members going bankrupt.
Over 1/4th of the calendars are already out :eek: Have you already put something to a good use?
