Hello! I am new to the RPGMaker forums, but I’ve been using RPGMaker for a long time. I recently found this old project on my computer and I have decided to finish it up. It is made on RPGMakerVX and makes extensive use of the RTP and old scripts, but features engaging characters, unique puzzles, and a detailed world. I hope that you will give it a try!

-DaXigua

Quick Overview:
Genre: Fantasy RPG
Average Demo Time: The demo has about 4-5 hours of gameplay.
Game Progression: The game is about 50% done (Currently have about 10 hours of gameplay completed. The total should be around 15-20.) I am planning to be finished with it around November. I'm on the look out for a couple beta testers who could play through the whole game to check for errors and provide feedback before I release the completed game to everyone.  If you need me to do this for your game in return, I would be happy to!

On a corner of the planet Loxni lies an isolated archipelago known as the Tawn Islands which is home to three kingdoms: Kapa, Musa, and Dev.

25 years ago, the Tawn Islands suffered through the horrific Mountain War between Musa and Kapa which left the islands in ruins. However, since the end of the war Kapa and Musa have agreed to work together allowing for years of rebuilding and peace.

We enter this world during this period of relative harmony and prosperity. Kapa is presently ruled by a young King Inoa who is still learning how to manage power properly. However, the Islands are currently plagued by an intense monster uprising which threatens the safety of all the kingdoms. Normally lured out from the depths of the earth by the use of magic (especially during wartime), monsters are a perpetual nuisance who harass the people of Tawn in surges known as monster uprisings. Yet, despite the regularity of these uprisings, something is fishy about the current one. It seems to be unusually extreme, suggesting that someone, somewhere is dabbling in powerful and destructive magic…

The story follows Makaio (the default name, you can choose your own name for him), the Captain of the Kapa Royal Guard, an elite group of soldiers who are personal bodyguards and investigators for the King of Kapa. Makaio is just one year away from retirement, which means the chance to live in splendor in the King’s Park. However, he feels a sense of ambivalence about himself which has left him confused. Nonetheless, he has dedicated a significant amount of time to the training of Kaiemi, a promising young Royal Guard recruitment whom Makaio reveres.

As Makaio gears up for Kaiemi’s initiation into the Royal Guard, strange things began happening around Tawn. Soon Makaio must learn not only to battle with powerful external forces, but with his own internal demons, self-doubts, and morals. It is a battle that will leave Makaio questioning the values and choices he has held dear his whole life.

How will our characters confront the looming tumult before them? Will they be able to overcome their own pride and ambitions or be swallowed by them?

Perhaps peace is more fragile than we all realize…

The game will feature 9 playable characters (2 optional) and dozens of NPCs. Here are a few of the important ones:

Makaio (or whatever name you choose): The main protagonist and Captain of the Kapa Royal Guard. Makaio has dedicated his entire life to service in the Royal Guard and has served under three Kings.  Because his position in the Royal Guard is so demanding, Makaio has never had a family and has abandoned all of his hobbies.  When we enter his life, he is only one year away from official retirement.  When the Captain of the Royal Guard receives an official retirement he is given a large cottage in the King’s Park and his name is inscribed on a wall in a section of the Royal Catacombs, the place that Royal Guard Captains and Kapa Kings are buried when they die. Despite the fact that he is receiving laurels for a successful career, Makaio is beginning to doubt if this has any meaning to him anymore…

Kaiemi: Kaiemi is the most promising recruit the Kapa Royal Guard has seen in years. Kaiemi, like Makaio when he was younger, is completely devoted to the idea of joining the Royal Guard and trains harder than any of the other recruits. Kaiemi has become like a son to Makaio, who has taken Kaiemi under his wing and groomed him to ascend the ranks of the Royal Guard. Yet, Makaio is a bit skeptical of the close relationship Kaiemi has with the young king, Inoa, and wonders if Inoa brings out the best in Kaiemi.

Hoku: Hoku is a good friend of Makaio and he serves as the Chief of the Mages of Kapa. This position puts him on the committee of the Five Advisors to the King of Kapa, an honor that he shares with Makaio. Hoku is very wise but is also good natured and kind hearted. Like Makaio, Hoku is also approaching retirement and is looking forward to his youngest son’s wedding and the opportunity to spend more time with his grandchildren.  Hoku does not get along well with King Inoa, but believes that Inoa will slowly mature and become as good a ruler as his father.

Lani: Lani is a simple soldier in the Kapa Army (known as a Guard) yet has the courage and strength to excel in battle. Although her rank is low, she possesses a spirit which intrigues Hoku and riles Makaio. Initially assigned as an expendable body guard for Makaio and Hoku, but her role slowly becomes more and more important…

King Inoa: Inoa is the new king of Kapa and the youngest king to every hold the throne. Only 23 years old, Inoa struggles to live up to the reputation of his father, who presided over 25 years of peace and prosperity in Kapa. Inoa questions some of the axioms and values of the older generation and wonders if new ideas and more initiative are needed from the government of Kapa. He resents the formality and bureaucratic structures that govern the actions of the King, which he believes slows progress down, and does not always like to consult his Five Advisors as often as his father did. Inoa has taken a special interest in Kaiemi and feels that the young Royal Guard possesses the same sense of action and ambition as he does.

-This game is designed to be a bit harder than your typical RPG. This means that money is more scarce, battles require more strategy, spells drain relatively large amounts of MP, and healing items are rare. The upside to this is that I tried to make random battles happen less frequently than I’ve seen in other games (I find constant random battles annoying) but the downside is that they are much harder. If the game is too hard, please let me know, but give it a good try first!

- This game features a detailed magic element system and requires the constant need to use different types of magic and weapons to overcome certain enemies.

-Uses Modern Algebra’s quest journal to help you keep track of both main quests and side quests (which you should do because they  give you great items!). Speaking of which, there are lots of enchanted items to find!

-A Codex which provides extensive background on the characters and history of the Tawn Islands.

-Uses Yanfly’s Bestiary Scan to document the numerous monsters you face and help you determine your battle tactics. I also make use of Yanfly’s Battle System to create more exciting battle scenes.

-A potion brewing system where you can mix certain gathered items to make stat boosting elixirs.

-Many well-thought out puzzles and mini-games to add diversity to the game.

Uses Yanfly's Engine RD to the fullest

Large, interesting towns

Cut scene example

Eventing to create fun mini games

An example from the Codex

Visual effects: dust storm

Bestiary to help you keep track of monsters and their weaknesses

Quest Journal example

Lots of puzzles to challenge you!

Wow, it looks nice, begin to download it, =)
But I can only try it the next Friday, I've been busy at this current time, wait for my feedback mate..

EDIT : DaXigua, I just realized that after I download the non RTP version, it's actually a VX, I don't own VX , and when I try to download the link with RTP it's somewhat not directing me to your hosting file place, any help with this?

It seems the RTP version link is mistakenly directed to the image for Downloads. You can get the RTP for VX still though even if you do not own it and then download the Non-RTP version.

Really enjoying the game so far, I'm stuck at a point in the game:

In the Moon Forest tower, with the riddle, I'm assuming it has something to do with the order you step on the buttons and the amount of stuff in the rooms. Have not been able to figure it out.
It's a really solid little game though, definitely good work.

Thanks for the compliment. Let me help you with that puzzle:

You have to step on the switches in the order that the poem suggests (2,4,5,3,1). The number of each switch is indicated by the number of covered vases that are next to the switch. If you step on a switch in the wrong order, it won't work and you will have to put all the switches back up before trying again.

I'm thinking I might change the eventing a bit with that puzzle so that things are more clear. I can see how it can be confusing. Once you get past that section, there is another puzzle in the tower that might be too hard. Let me know if you need help with that one.

You're most welcome.

You were indeed correct though, I have a particularly difficult time with tone puzzles. So if you could provide some help on that I would greatly appreciate it

Here is some help:

The orb colors correspond to parts of a melody. This melody is heard when you interact with the Sage's tablet. Around the Tower are colored orbs that play part of the tune that you hear from the tablet. That tells you what order to set the orbs in for the puzzle on the second floor. That is, you have to "reconstruct" the melody to find the proper order for the colored orbs. For example the Green orb on the roof plays the first part of the melody which tells you that the first orb (going from left to right) on the 2nd floor should be set to Green. Once you put all the colored orbs in the right order, you pull the switch to finish the puzzle.  If you are still struggling here is the solution:  From left to right: Green, Yellow, Red, Blue, Purple. Pull the switch once you put the orbs in this order.

Apologies for the difficulty of the puzzles!

Hey I've played the game, I was on the mission to see what happen with the forest sage(or she is a witch?), wish me luck..  By the way I gave the main character Leon for his name, haha..

Oh and the feedback, the game is great, I haven't found any bug yet, one thing that you need to consider a little, the Banshee(the first boss) kick my ass with her stun skill from Banshee scream, it's really nasty, however I managed to kill her with some luck(after the third times trying). Consider to make it a little bit easy, perhaps the banshee should not do the scream skill to often, it's nasty when I never get a turn for 3 times a row. Aside from that, the game is great, oh yeah I remember I saw a little typo, but it's not a problem. The magic element is simple but nice, kinda love it.

I continue the game at Sunday =).

I wish you luck! And good choice for a name :) And please let me know if you do encounter any typos! They are hard to catch sometimes

I think I may nerf the Banshee a bit, you are right that the first boss should not be that hard. I may reduce her MP so she can't cast the spells so much.
Thank you so much for playing the demo, I really appreciate it!

No problem, I convinced my brother to play your game too. He still 12 years and never plays any RPG games before, let us see if he can finish your game, because if he can, then the game is suitable for beginner, though I believe you said something about puzzle, I hope it's not that hard. =)

Oh yeah, my brother kill the banshee in his first try, I think it's me that sucks >_<

And about the typo, It should be in one of a dialogue before the event fighting the banshee, not pass it. But I don't remember which one, I think it's Kaiemi dialogue, and it just a little tiny typo, just miss 1 letter, it's not really big deal.

Hey Watermelon buddy, I found a little bug, when I on my mission to pick up Kaiemi, befre go to Moon Forest, I try to buy a key for access the inn in Huali, then there's you can change party member, now with the three members Leon(my chara), Hoku and Lani, you know the 4th slot is empty right, but when I choose it, a demon picture appear, and it is level 30, this is the screenshot :

That a picture of demon level 30.

Is that supposed to be there? I don't think so.

Another little bug is, when a party member thrown to sleep, and he/she is dead(by a blow/magic), the sleep state is not removed, thus the message "Kaiemi(or whoever he/she) is sleeping" still appear eventhough the character is dead already. If that is indeed the game mechanism(keep state eventhough the character is dead) then it's fine, but I don't think the message is a good thing, because you know, why a dead member is sleeping?

EDIT : Oh yeah, how to revives a dead party member(aside from resting at inn)? I'm a little lost here, thanks.

Hello Bolu Bolu! Great catch on that bug with the demon character. That's quite a creepy bug. He shouldn't be there... (or should he? *evil laugh) I think I know what's causing it, I will fix it in the next update. Thanks a lot for catching that.

The other bug is something that is wrong with the script I'm using for the battle system. I've got to figure it out at some point, but I hope it's not too distracting.

As for reviving the character, you can either go to an Inn, use magic vapors (an item you can't buy until later, although I may change this), or use a healing crystal (which you will encounter later).

Three minor bugs found.

1 .First is when you reset the game by pressing F12 then try to load the game, the game will crash because some scripts stack level too deep, there's script that solved this matter by respawn a new game.exe, but I forgot what script.

2. The default bug for VX and VXAce(or it is considered a bug or not), unappeared enemy will appeared if the battle is over(because all enemy present is already slain), but then the game consider it win, so the enemy stilll sit on screen although it's win. This because appear halfway thingy. At least that is when happen in VXAce, I have seek the problem for it, then the culprit is this

IMPORTANT : I don't know if the script above will work in VX, I don't own VX, so sorry.

You can remove that appear to remove this issue, however I myself didn't really know if that is considered as a bug, why Enterbrain put appear on there. Sometimes I think that, perhaps if an enemy appear halfway is appeared when the battle end(because player is fast killing machine and didn't let the appear halfway enemies to appeared in it's supposed turn) it will inform the player that in this group actually exist a hidden enemy, so the player will be careful in the next time he/she face the group again(If you know what I mean, if no then forget it, sorry)
class Game_Enemy < Game_Battler  def on_battle_end    @result.clear    remove_battle_states    remove_all_buffs    clear_actions    clear_tp unless preserve_tp?    appear # <= this is the culprit  end end # End of Game_Enemy

3. in the sage's note, search for word tranlate, it should be translate

Alright that's the bug that I currently found in my time play until the tower, now I'm stuck with the magic tune ball, I didn't really like spoiler, but alas, I can't move on, why the switch still play buzzer, I'm really certain that the ball color order is green, yellow, red, blue, purple, from left to right, Or I do something wrong? I even open the ME sound to repeat the tune over and over, but still it's futile. Help please..

P.S : Oh yeah I don't really recommend a puzzle like this because "Im sorry" for our deaf friends this will be not good, trust me they don't like it.

But for your puzzle button is indeed really great, the way you give that riddle about button, I admit I spent almost 15 minutes with brainstorming to solve it before I figure out the jars.

Thanks for all the help! I will be sure to look into them and rethink the music puzzle.

The is the correct order. You turn each ball to that color from left to right and then pull the switch.  I tested it today and it works so I'm not sure what's going on. Here is the screen shot

Hi Daxigua Watermelon buddy,
