That is a really vague and dismissive answer with no reasons given aside from Gordon and Boba Fett. Most of those are impractical or justified by magic/technology. Many are boring emough they look like alternate skins for the same character
As far as Gordon and using a helmet, I don't recall there being any in the first Half Life, and the entire time he was simply trying to get out of Black Mesa, so for all we know, the reason he isn't wearing a helmet is because there was none available. That does beg the question why are helmets in such short supply in a facility that deals with radiation and stuff, but that's another point. (It would've been different if the game had hazard helmets and other researchers wore them but he simply didn't).
Fair point about Boba Fett's cape (though we don't know if it's made of flammable material!). Still, take away the cape, and the rest of the armour is still practical enough.
And what's so impractical about the others? You said they were uninteresting to you, but clearly they're interesting AND distinguishable enough to most people. The point I was making was that the practical gear they were wearing was also giving them identity rather than taking away from it, like you claimed.
Like Gordon's unique hazard suit, Isaac's stylish facemask, Judge Dredd's helmet, Magneto's helmet, Tali's protective purple suit (which also makes us intrigued about what she looks like behind her mask), Corvo's skull-shaped facemask and a hood. All these items serve a purpose AND look cool.
