Which part of game development is the most exciting for you and why?

For me, I love picking out music for the game. I'm the kind of person who has, like, hundreds of tracks and dozens of albums loaded into the maker and spends weeks hunting down the perfect tracks. Music makes a game, and it can also make me remember things, as sometimes when certain songs play, I remember something or a certain event I associate with the music.

Play testing, because you finally see your ideas come to life.

I wanted to do "The Clans" game that is set into school environment (kind of like spin-off set to "real" world.) Since my characters are punks, goths, etc.

Seems that my plan may proceed with these nice tileset packs.

Hmmm, I would say writing a dialogue. Having my jerk characters facing a new situation is always so entertaining. It also works as nice outlet to express myself.

Entry: Mapping is good, but my favorite part is eventing and testing those events.

Awesome stuff, I'm particularly craving for Scy's pack and the Time Fantasy tiles. :o

Character development without any doubts.

Seeing your creations being appreciated (or criticized) by people is the most satysfying feeling ever regarding game development, people will see them hating, loving, facing difficulties, interacting with each other and changing\evolving too during the story. Also when the story will be at a good point, it will be a lot easier to develop them, they will basically take on lives of their own. You will also get attached to them during the whole process, they will basically become your babies.

The most exciting part for me would be the world-building and writing. I enjoy delving into the world's lore and it's people, and it makes me feel immersed in the world I created. I enjoy having dialogues and books in-game that help to set the world's environment and atmosphere for the player. The writing opportunities is what drew me to game development above anything else :)

Coming up with fun battle mechanics and building the party's skills around them!

Those music packs look very enticing.

The most exciting part?  it tends to be the bit I'm doing now (except working in the data base).  I love making new skill animations and testing out SEs with them; mapping, choosing music, etc. etc.

So it boils down to a straight fight between character development and play testing.  I love seeing my characters come alive, interact with each other, carry the story forward in ways that sometimes surprise me.  But I also love seeing the whole thing come together in the actual experience of playing my games.  Oh decisions, decisions.

Character development.  And i know that tomorrow I'll probably change my mind and go for play testing, and then change back again.  It's that close a call.

Best part of development? Fixing stuff. Anyone ever try building something where you hit a brick wall? The moment when you figure out a fix and everything clicks into place is beautiful.

For me meow,

The most exciting part of game development is creating and developing the story because it is the starting point for many RPG Makers. Everyone wants to get their story across.

Which part of game development is the most exciting for you and why?

Breathing life into pixels and shapes, taking a bunch of squares on a screen and (if only for a moment) creating the illusion that

these characters are "alive".

I truly love Time Fantasy pack, it's style reminds me of good old games!

Answer is: unfolding the story I'm about to tell with the players. I usually come up with the beginning of the tale, the main characters and their goal, and then I just let the story go on it's own, with characters interacting with eachother and creating events.

For me, I'm most excited at the very beginning - designing characters, classes, items and skills.

I screwed around a bit with the Tile Fantasy set last night. I really hope for a snowy area/port city/kitchen stuff (specific, I know) expansion in the future, but what you get for $15 is pretty darn excellent. I like it even more than pixel myth, which is already an impressive-looking (but limited) set!

I slightly color balanced the trees so that they were more green. The default blueish edges stuck out too much against the green grass. (Very WIP, there's obviously not much detail on the sides of the map haha)

Again, I wish there were more kitchen stuff, like at least a counter and cutting board like in the Ace RTP. Still, the fancier walls are nice to play with. I'll be editing the chipset to have chairs in more logical positions than is available currently, though... they look odd both here and on the store page.

Volcano tiles! At first I was like "this is the worst ground tile ever" but then I realized that there are like six variations to mix up the ground with. I quite like this, although I might edit the lava to be a bit less red and more orange so that it doesn't contrast quite so much with the floor.

If you're scared of mapping, I don't suggest this set. It requires a lot of fiddly work with shift-clicking and layer juggling that isn't as easy to do as in 2k3 (but I imagine there's still a lot to do with the 2k3 version as well). I made those above examples in about an hour and a half last night while also chatting with a friend about the color values and such. If you're NOT scared of mapping, these tiles are great! It has the options for:

  • Basic world map
  • Rural villages
  • Cities
  • Castles
  • Two types of outdoor cliff areas combined with a set of forest tiles
  • Deserts (inc. fortress exteriors)
  • A moderate variety of interiors, including chapels and smithies
  • Caves (dirt and volcanic)
  • A wide variety of wall/floor options for all sorts of handbuilt dungeons (evil castles, towers, etc.)
Worth the price, but if you're planning on making a 40-hour epic with the set I recommend waiting for an expansion that adds more varied locales.

Oh wow! That looked like Jason Perry's pixel work in the Time Fantasy pack. Does that mean these would be partly compatible with his Old School Modern set as well? That would be killer.

For me, what's best in game development is to crush your enemies. See them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women!

I don't think they would work with the Old School set.  This set has dithering, a different palette and the sprites are a different scale.  There are some similarities because they're drawn by the same person but it's not really compatible.

Making all the events and the character, controlling them writing your own way, it's just so exiting to make maps and use events with people :)

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
