In RPG Maker, you can present players with a set of choices to select. However, by default, they can wait as long as they want to make a selection.

Using this plugin, you can automatically force a selection, to create a mechanic where the player has a limited amount of time to make a decision.
Once the allotted time has expired, the game will automatically make a selection for the player, and the event will continue as you have designed it.

Could the time remaining be visible, eg a bar (next to the choices) shrinking?

Putting together a plugin that allows you to create a more customizable timer with custom data source (eg: pull data from choice timer, timer can be displayed where you want)

Plugin has been updated.

I've added a function that allows you to force cancel the choices using script calls.

This is useful if you wanted to implement the timer behavior yourself using, for example, a parallel process that runs in the background while the choice is displayed.

So regarding timer display, at the moment you could choose to use a parallel process to handle it: display a timer in your event, activate a switch which enables a parallel process, and have the parallel process check what the current time is.

You could then use other plugins to customize the timer, such as one I'm working on
