VXA Timed Trial By: Yuuta Kirishima / Dexter Special Thanks: Galenmereth / Tor Damian Design What does it do? When trial has ended displays a message then exits the game. Also disables save if you allow it too. Terms of use: Free to use in commercial and in non-commerical Credit: Galenmereth & Yuuta Kirishima / DexterBasically when time is over it displays a message and closes the engine, and if you want it to, deletes the players save if you want it.

What Might someone use this for?

Well I needed it for a demo I was releasing but its not the full game cause I haven't completed it yet.

Commercial game might use it to create a free trial.

Features:

  • Allows you to set the amount of minutes in the trial.
  • Allows you to disable saving.

Cruel, yet useful.

I'm sure many people will use that in commercial games.

Or! I will use that on my FREE game! Million dollar idea! I'm so smart!

It might be useful, but probably not for commercial games, where it is normal for players to expect to be able to carry their save files from the free demo forward into the full game if they buy it.  Players hate having to start again once they've played the demo, so this idea would probably hurt sales, not help them.

I find this worrisome. Read Galenmareth's terms of use, please.

Basically, in case you're not familiar with reading diff output (which I doubt if you're a software engineer), you most certainly did not "change the script completely" -- you added your "timed trial" functionality (which doesn't do what you think it does at all) which simply depends on Galenmareth's Timer script.

For reference, the original script is here.

Now, arguably, Galen does ask you to "please" copy the header, which implies that you don't have to -- but really, it's ethically questionable at best not to do so. Replacing it completely with your own header (which does give credit, I know) is... more than a little bit misleading.

I'm happy you gave them credit, but please, keep their script intact if you want to add some functionality on top of it -- think of it as distributing Galenmareth's script with yours. I don't think anyone would have a problem with you providing functionality which makes use of the original script as long as the original is left as it was. Removing the entire header like that and replacing it with your own may be okay in this particular case, but that's a slippery slope to start going down, and not a practice that I ever recommend.

Thank you for that, I was going to just distribute it as an add-on for his timer script but I thought you would get an stack error if you had them both in at the same time. I added his header into the script ;)

I don't see any reason why a stack error would occur unless you're doing something particular odd -- anyway, thanks for adding that in so quickly. :)

Oh and in school Ruby wasn't a part of the curriculum, twas mainly Java, C++, C#, and Python, so I started learning it this year when I began creating games using RPG Maker. I'm glad there's people like you on this forum making sure coders get proper credit.

Back in action to develop the indie game that has been long overdue... Final Fallacy. A game that keeps on giving! The development never ends as the developer thinks to be the smart cookie by coming back and beginning by saying... "Oh bother, this indie game has been long overdue..." How could one resist such?
