To anyone that has sold their game made with RPG Maker, how did it feel when you got your first sale? Was the time and effort worth the reward?

Never sold a RPG Maker game for money but my first (and only) published game was free and it got 4000 downloads on itchio and a lot of people told me how much they loved it and that was plenty enough/worth the time and effort for me.

I was really nervous when I pressed the release button. My friend bought the game first so I don't know what to say xD (I'm happy about it)
And It's really great to see people discussing my game. It's got 1000 downloads. Really worth time and effort.

I released my first commercial game last week, and my experience was very similar to that of @dsiver144 without the 1,000 downloads. Yes, the first sale was exciting and nice, but for me it was even more rewarding to see that people enjoyed the game.

Idealistically, I'd say that yes, it was worth the time and effort (and money) because I really enjoyed making the game, but I suppose that from a more practical point of view, I should wait for the total sales number before deciding on that!

@SeaPhoenix That game looks like a lot of fun! I'm definitely going to have to pick it up one day! I like management games like that! Plus you have multiple endings! I'm SOLD!

Depends on what you mean. If you mean will you get your time and effort back in $$$ vs working the same time elsewhere, probably not. The market is way different than it was 6 - 7 years ago when you could release about anything on Steam and get 100,000 - 200,000 sales.

To give you an idea, I released my game last September. I'm still at a small loss in terms of how much I made vs cost to get the music, art, and scripts. Granted, it is small (< 1K) and odds are high I'll hit break-even within another year.

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
Can someone recommend some fun story-heavy RPGs to me? Coming up with good gameplay is a nightmare! I was thinking of making some gameplay platforming-based, but that doesn't work well in RPG form*. I also was thinking of removing battles, but that would be too much like OneShot. I don't even know how to make good puzzles!
one bad plugin combo later and one of my followers is moonwalking off the screen on his own... I didn't even more yet on the new map lol.
time for a new avatar :)
