As far as I know to fire an event with an action button, that event must be set the same as character, is there a way to put it below the character and it still fires the action button?

What do you mean? An event that is placed below the character can be triggered with the action button if the player is standing on top of it.

...yes? The event priority and the event trigger are two separate selections on the event screen. You can set them to whatever combination you like.

The only caveat is, as arsMori said, if the priority is below character, they must be standing on, rather than adjacent to, the event to trigger it with the action button.

If you specifically want the character to be able to walk on top of the event but trigger it from an adjacent space, you should leave the priority as same as character but check Through on.

No, if you set priority to same as characters and turn THROUGH on, it still requires you to be standing on the same tile, not next to it.

but when I use my mouse to trigger it, if the event is right in front of the character, it doesn't trigger but runs straight into

Not in my test game. I even checked it before posting it

Correct, because your mouse click isn't just "the action button." It's also the set movement button, so if there's nothing to stop character movement, moving them takes priority. If you use the keyboard it will work the way you want.

If you need this to work with mouse, you'll need to come up with some other solution, such as the event starts at same priority and doesn't have through, so clicking on it will make the player move next to it and activate the event, then you can put a command in that event to change its priority.

That'd be why it doesn't happen for me - I always use the mouse as well.
