In this tutorial, I demonstrate a way to set up a lost woods type puzzle inspired by the classic Legend of Zelda. My own RPG Maker MV game will have at least one of these in it.

You remember the lost woods screen, right? You had to travel a specific path to get past the screen. If you took a wrong turn, the puzzle reset. This tutorial will show how to set up something similar, as well as create a key item that will allow you to bypass the puzzle if you have it.

No plugins are necessary.

Please watch and offer your thoughts here. I am still somewhat new with RPG Maker MV, so there may be easier ways to do this. If so, let me know that as well, and I will revise the video and give credit where credit is due.

If you follow this tutorial exactly and something isn't working, please let me know that as well, and I will address it.

I am considering redoing this tutorial. As I produced the four that followed, I found that there may be a way to streamline the process a bit more. Plus, I've got better audio gear, so the sound quality will be improved.

So I watched the video and tried to follow along and I got lost. Most of it is alright for instructions on how to set up the exact same puzzle that you're making, but since it never explains why you're doing the things you are it is less helpful if you'd want to do things a little differently. I also felt like you skipped over the most important section, explaining how the events would be different in different directions and what would make the puzzle reset vs. going forward. Maybe my problems are due to me being beginner level for eventing and having no programming skills but from the description I was under the impression that this wouldn't be a hindrance. I did like the addition of a skip item but it was rather heavily incorporated into the rest of the puzzle tutorial so I didn't get how to make this puzzle without it. I would personally prefer if it were expressed as an optional way to do things.

In all honesty, this was probably not the best example to lead off my tutorial series with. I am using a puzzle like this in my own game project, and I had to figure it out, and thought it would be good to share what I learned. Now that I have seven tutorials under my belt, I've got a routine worked out for putting them together and presenting instructions more clearly.

I will redo this tutorial to be more in line with that approach. Please check out my other tutorials and let me know what you think. I really appreciate the feedback.

You can do this with just copies of the 4 direction map and transfer player events. No need to be this complicated.
Feedback on your video: try to be less boring, just skip the parts where you would want to tell that you are making a new project and you are naming it blahblahblah and where you tell the numbers of the items. These things are just completely unnecessary and really can ruin a tutorial.
Also I really missed the part in the end when you would have had to show that it really works.

Thank you for the constructive criticism. It is appreciated. How about PMing me a link to some of your own tutorials, I would really be interested in seeing your approach and seeing what you demonstrate.

Regarding using four copied maps to achieve the same goal, that is actually how I started the process. But I wanted a way to achieve the same purpose but use only one map. I got it working with my own game project, and thought I would share the method with the community.

Regarding not showing it working, I am not currently set up to do video capture on this computer. That's why the tutorials consist of screenshots chained together. I will soon be building a professional-grade audio/video production rig, and when I get all the software on it that I'll be using, that will change. Until then, I am content with doing things this way. Besides. Anyone following the tutorial can launch the project and see for themselves that it works. At least... that was my thought when I produced Tutorial 1.

I am revisiting the Lost Woods puzzle process in Tutorial 8. merging it with the rest of the Finding Secrets series that is Tutorials 2 - 7.

I actually did not see that it`s just a chain of screenshots. I thought you hid the cursor or something and didn`t really think about it anymore. Then its ok i guess.

Yes this was meant to be constructive criticism. But as i see now i just hurt your feelings. Im hungarian, 17, havent really been in foreign countries and still i think im pretty good at english but i would be really nervous if i had to talk in english in front of a camera so it won`t happen. Even if i was native i wouldn`t send a tutorial.

If i sent you that you are bad at videomaking and just quit it and did not say any points where you have to improve i could understand this andareyouanybetter?ifnotjust****off attitude but i did want you to improve so i told you some points where you can improve thus i dont think i should prove you that im any better. I could very well not be better especially in english but could be better too haven`t tested it.
And i really did not meant to be rude im just the kind of guy that doesnt shut his mouth and doesnt lie. So please take my points about boringness into consideration in terms of improving. I just want good for you so i dont care if you dont its your youtube channel you do what you want there i just gave some advices if you dont like them just ignore this message.

Sorry for the missed `s i know they should be here and there i just got bored of typing them.

It's quite alright Huassassin. My feelings were not hurt. I just assumed that you were speaking from experience and I was curious about what your methods might be. The rest of my points were to address the issues you raised.

Thank you again for your feedback.

I am still getting my feet wet both here on the forums and with MV in general, but I found this tutorial to be very helpful. While the system you used isn't quite right for me and my project, it did give me a fundamental understanding that allowed me to build something that did, in fact, suit my project. Thanks a lot for your contributions to the community here; the newbies like me appreciate it!

Nice idea/tutorial, I had no problem following along. The beauty of this kind of puzzle is that you can find so many varied ways to solve it (just look at the actual Zelda games and the way the lost woods are solved/implemented there). The ring of passage is a very good idea!

Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
