Hey, I want to make a forest maze where the characters have to avoid certain dangers (like monsters) and if one runs into you you lose HP, and you want to make sure it doesn't go down to zero.

Is there any way I can make the HP bars visible on screen so you would know how much you have?

You can event it using pictures or script it...

SongQueenSaeryen, please avoid double posting, as it is against the forum rules. You can review our forum rules here. Thank you.

What exactly do you want help with? What have you got so far? Showing pictures on the screen that are tied to a variable is quite easy.

You could also look through the completed scripts, someone might have scripted one, or request a script.

Sorry.

What I want is an out-of-battle graphic that shows how much HP each character has. This would appear throughout the game, preferrably at a top corner.

I'm a beginner and just don't know how to do it.

Yes, I know what you want, and I know perfectly well how to do it (I event HUDs all the time), but you have to start somewhere yourself first so that we can help you with what you've got.

Here's some hints:

You would need a graphic for each and every increment of the HP bar/number, I suggest 20 pictures (each picture represents 5 HP, so 20 x 5 = 100) since that's more manageable. Then simply use a variable to calculate the HP, and then show the appropriate picture based on that variable.

Thanks, I'll edit this post if and when I need more help.

EDIT: Made the pictures. Saved them to the Graphics/Pictures folder. Should I move them? And what sort of event should I make? I want it to be visible in all maps.

EDIT 2: Made an event so that it automatically shows the picture when the HP variable is 100 or above. A second event in the first room sets the HP to 100. I tried making the event so that for each HP level it would change the bar but it changed the bar right away due to the "or above" option and I couldn't move my character.

What next?

EDIT 3: So I made an event in the first room that a variable called "HP" to 100 (which is the HP at the start) and a common event that shows the 100 HP picture if that event has taken place.

My next step would be to make all these switches so that if my HP is lowered, the bar changes, right? I will keep trying.

I have a couple questions.

1. I have an event that shows a picture. The problem is that if the picture (an HP bar) is showing, my character can't move. And if I do something so that she can move, the picture is gone. Can anyone help?

2. I'd like some help with game saving. One idea I have is that pressing a certain key saves the game (which I would use another picture onscreen to say "Press S to save", which relates to question 1) but I think that would require a script, and I'm a beginner so I don't know how to script at all. Is there a better, easier way?

That's very strange because showing a picture should not prevent your character from moving.  My only guess would be you are using an auto run trigger on your event to show the picture, and that is what is actually preventing you from being able to move.

But that is just a guess.  If you like, you can include a screen shot of the event itself and that would help me better to identify what might be causing your character from being able to move.

So you are trying to create an hud of sorts? Make sure that whatever event you are using is run by a parallel process and not something else like auto-run, the easiest way is usually to use a common event so you can control whenever it is used. Another good thing to do is to put a wait event of 5 frames or so in-between each update of the hud, as sometimes having an event update constantly without pause can cause frame-rate issues depending on how many events you are using.

Thanks for that advice. I will try that.

EDIT: When I do parallel process it doesn't show the picture.

EDIT 2: Fixed problem in Edit 1

Just FYI:
The fastest way to find a solution with events is a screenshot of those events, that allows us to check what you did wrong.

As for your second problem:

you can do keyboard-activated commands with eventing alone (without scripts), but it's tricky because the conditional checks if the key is being pressed in the frame the command is executed and you need to wait the event to prevent a short button press to be processed as half a dozen button presses.

I switched to something else since my first one for number 1 wasn't working, but it still won't show the pictures.

In my first room I have this event:

It is supposed to trigger this common event (it shows a picture according to how much HP you have):

Help, please?

EDIT: And what's an easier way to save the game whenever you want?

your first event triggers when the player presses the action button while standing exactly ON the event (because it's set to "below player"), and since the event has no grafic, the player doesn't even know he/she has to press the action button there.

If you want an event to trigger some switches on game start, you st it to autorun and to prevent it from repeating (which would set the variable always to 100 several times per second, you add a control self-switch A = ON after your commands, and add another page which will be conditioned to that self-switch A but doesn't contain anything at all.

Okay, thank you so much!

EDIT: New problem. When I bump a monster the HP bar doesn't go down, though my actual HP does. This is the monster event:

According to the common event, the HP bar should go down, since the variable goes down with the HP, but it doesn't.

EDIT 2: Figured out what the exact problem is. The variable is set to 100 then remains static, even though the monster bump is supposed to change it. How can I tweak my monster so it changes?

You CAN set a variable to your player's HP. Set it to Game Data > Actor > HP. This variable now contains your current HP.

I think this tutorial will help you further.

I am merging your two threads together since it's the same thing.

Thank you, Celianna.

EDIT: Now I need a conditional of "if this person's HP is equal to this number, show picture." Sorry for asking so much.

If you look at the common event above, it should work but the picture still stays static even though my HP is clearly decreasing (I get game overs)

EDIT: Okay, I give up. Can someone please make me an HP HUD? I've tried this online "designer" but I can't do a thing with it.

Your common event, at the very top, should have the variable set to the HP, and then each conditional branch will check if X or above, then show the right picture. Then in the else branch, keep putting in more conditional branch. Work your way up. Start at the lowest number, and end at the highest.

Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
