Unsupported PNG Image (GG, MWPaint)

Hi, I'm having trouble with my CharSet. So, I've customized one character and then tried to implement it in rm2k3 but the "Set" screen shows a black little windows, so I've tried to run the game and it says "Unsupported PNG Image" so I knew it was about the bits, that I couldn't go above 256 colors (8bits)... So, I've tried many tweak in graphics gale till desesperation to greyscale my image, but the file still don't match the sofware, what should I do?

Make sure that when you try to import the image, you've clicked "Character Set" in the left window.

Hmm, works, but I have to do all the recolors, and usually I just go to Tools > Database > Actors and select the one ine my project folder. Oh and btw it deleted the RTP, dunno why. Thanks anyways.

Did you manage to bring your image down to 256 colors?

I copy/paste Actor 2 to my project, and when I do a change in the one in my project, I can't load the Actor 2 <RTP> in the software.
Nope, I've used custom colors in paint, is that the error I made?

'Useful Development Tools' are for things like programs to make music, graphic programs for spriting, things which are used outside the engine to help game making.

About the colors:
In the program you use to color, look if there is an option to decrease the colors of an image. I find it in
Image > Decrease color depth > 256 colors

I can reduce the colors for you if you want, just send me the pictures or post them here.

About the deleted Actor:
If you create an Image and name it "Actor 2" and you import it or paste it in the game, it will delete the "Actor 2" that already existed and take its place. So always name your new images, a new name.

@Rachma334 FYI: It has been shown in the past that RM2K(3) require the palette to be exactly 256 colors, not more but also not less.
Some programs store an incomplete palette if there are less than 256 colors in the picture, and that can cause problems.

Unfortunately I don't know which programs store the palette vcorrectly by adding colors if needed, because I don't use those makers myself.
But that is what you'll have to look for, it has been discussed on this forum several times in the past.

Oh sorry it's true I didn't used the search command... Well I'm new in graphic design so more or less than 256 colors doesn't talk too much to me. But in GG > All Frames > Color Depth, my image is set to 8bpp (256 colors) but still doesn't works ): Should I try an other Algorithm? I see Type B, C and D which can only select 8bpp (256 colors)...

When you select 8bpp (256 colors) what happens? Did you save it and try to put it in the game?

Normally the image will look the same even with 256 colors, it's hard to see a difference.
But when you put it in RM2K3 it should work.

I used a Paint shop Pro version to do it. You can find old versions of paint shop pro for free on the web. :uwink:

EDIT: The steps I took were:
1. Decrease colors to 256.
2. Save as PNG
(and to make the background transparent before pressing save I clicked "PNG" then "Options" then "Run Optimizer" and in the Transparency option I chose "Single color transparency" and "Areas that match this color" (I selected the green of the background))
3. Confirm save.

It sounds more complicated than it is. You'll get used to it, don't worry.

In GG I can see a bit of difference after making it 256, but still doesn't work, I've tried it on a test image.
Downloading Paint shop Pro right now, thanks for the infos and the help. I'll recontact you if I've got some troubles. :)

hmmm I've didn't touch the image you send me, except flipping it coz of PSPX9 who flipped it, and now it doesn't works anymore, any suggestion?

Edit: I now needs to know how to do it with GG since PSPX9 is a 30 days trial

Paint Shop Pro is still around? Wow. I currently use GIMP, which is free, and I have used it to make graphics for 2k3 so I can confirm that it does work.
