Update project possibilities

Hi!
I have a theoretical question, not yet linked to a practical situation.
What are the possibilities for updating a project?
I mean: after exporting a project and playing with it, is there a possibility to add content later without breaking the saves?
If so, what can actually be done and / or what absolutely cannot be done?

updates without breaking saves is very limited - and that has nothing to do with the RPG-Makers as you can see by the fact that even big games from AAA-companies sometimes invalidate saves with updates, and those can put a lot more work into keeping saves compatible.

Basically you can add to database and maps, and those additions will take effect on next loading (which might take some time if the save was done on an updated map, then the player will continue playing on the old map version until he leaves the map and returns to the new one later).

what can absolutely NOT be done is changing the plugins, deleting parts of the database/maps or reordering the database. That will always have either a high chance or a guarantee to break old savefiles.
